I'm new to diesel engines and have quesitons about starting techniques.

Too much pumping accelerator pedal is bad for the engine?

You should not have to PUMP a 6.2 just give it a little fuel while cranking. Let the glow plugs cycle at least twice before turning the key all the way.

You should make sure ALL 8 plugs are working properly 1 or two bad ones will give you a hard start 3 or more forget it, not going to start.

In my manual it says to pump the gas pedal once then start after cycling the glow plugs. When it is cold like this morning about 38 if i pump the pedal twice it starts instantly but puts out a small puff of white smoke for a second.

When you "pump" the accelerator, all you are doing is setting the fast idle solenoid. There is no acceleration pump on a diesel like there is on a carbureted engine.

When you press the accelerator down then you release the fast idle solenoid. As mentioned earlier, there is no accelerator pump on a diesel engine.

Make sure your engine has the Delco 60G glow plugs as the other glow plugs can experience mushroomed heads. And that means head removal which is very expensive if you have a shop do it!!!!

And don't ever use ether (starting fluid) to start your engine!!!!

Don't use ether or starting fluid on a diesel engine unless you want to damage your engine. The ether will ignite very early on the compression stroke due to its very, very low flash point.
