I am working on a 92 6.5L TD 4x4 3/4 ton reg cab long bed (not the one in my signature but it is broke as well....) I bought it as a parts pickup, but decided to see if I could get it running. I am unsure of the mileage, it showes 175,000 on the odometer, but I think it had quit working. I was told when I bought it that it had a blown gasket. When I pulled the exhaust crossover it had antifreeze in it, so I am guessing that was the case. Upon closer inspection, #4 piston has some dents in it. I didn't find anything in the cylinder when i pulled the head, but I will attach some pics to see what everybody says. I am not sure if it is still usable or if it needs to be replaced. I am trying to get this pickup running cheaply since it was just supposed to be a parts pickup.. Let me know what you think...

Looks like a glow tip broke off & rattled around in it for a while, should be okay at stock performance levels, you have 2 trucks any way to combine the sets and get full set of impact free pistons

ok, glad to hear it should be ok. Now that you mention it, it does look like the end of a glow plug. How hard is it to replace a piston in a 4x4 with the motor still in the vehicle? If it is too much of a problem, I won't mess with it.. I will just put it back together and see if it will get me by until I get my other one rebuilt...Thanks for the advice!

Your sig does not denote if you are K3500, but even that one if you drop the front diff you can push out the old one from the bottom & up after pulling the pan.

Was there any damage done to the cylinder head aswell? You should look that over very closely too. If you havent done so already.

Sorry, it is an K2500... I will look at dropping the differential to see how much work it is. I haven't had a chance to look at the head yet... I pulled it off, but didn't look at the bottom to see if there is any damage. good advice though, I didn't think about that yet....:o:

While in there look at main webs, I dropped mine just before 100K & warranty ran out, dropping diff with floor jack wasn't hard; going back up I needed an extra pair of hands.

Wipe down webbing with laqquer thinner or acetone, oil permiates into the crack if you have them and will leech back out just like a NDT kits dye, get a strong light & see if any spider veins show indicating main webbing cracks

ok, I will do that while I am in there... hopefully there wont be any cracks, but it is alot easier to look while I have it apart... thanks for the help!

not a problem, I am known to leave out critical details at times....

Has anyone in this place tried to put a duramax in and older pickup (like my 1992)? I was just wondering how many mods would have to be done and if it would be worth it to try.....I found a d-max motor and trans pretty cheap, but wanted more advice before I buy......

ok, I found the answers on the duramax swap.. not economical for me. I might look at a cummins if I find it at a good price.... decisions decisions.....
