6.6 LLY Fuel Leaking from Body of Injector - kw leak odor external #PIP3212 - (Nov 1, 2004)
6.6 LLY Fuel Leaking from Body of Injector

.

The following diagnosis might be helpful if the vehicle exhibits the symptom described in the PI.

Condition/Concern:

Dealer may find fuel leaking from between the injector and the cylinder head. Upon removal of the injector, the technician will notice fuel was leaking from the side of the injector body in the sealing ball area.

Recommendation/Instructions:

<LI =1>The injector body is leaking because of a cracked control head assembly internal to the injector.
<LI =1>When the control head cracks high pressure fuel leaks through to the injector sealing ball passage. The sealing ball is then forced out of the injector by the high pressure fuel.
<LI =1>If this fuel injector leak condition is found the injector will need to be replaced.

I'm an engineer. Sometimes when we design a product for the first time, every aspect of the design does not work out the way it was intended (could be for many reasons). But if given a second chance, we always make it right. Quite honestly, I am beginning to wonder about Bosch's engineering capability (after reading what Eric posted above and knowing the short history of the Duramax injector saga).Edited by: OC_DMAX

I haven't been paying much attention to the dodge sites, but they still use the same injectors, right? Any problems over there? Just wondering if the damage could be happening during engine assembly - over/under tightening, or if it is indeed a problem at Bosch...

Thanks Eric!

Maybe that is the souce of the diesel fuel smell I have been smelling but could not find.

How would we know if they are leaking?

Tysmith - you could be correct, an issue at the DMAX LTD assembly line instead of Bosch. However, "cracked control head assembly internal to the injector" sounds very similar to the LB7 "crack fuel injector bodies". The advantage the LLY has is the crankcase does not fill up with diesel and wear the bearing surfaces (as is the case with the LB7 engine). The LLY just leaks to the outside of the engine (and thus the owner smells the odor), since the injector is external mounted. At least this is an improvement.

(on edit: Actually, I'm not sure what would happen if the fuel leaked into the crankcase of the LLY. The LLY does not have the crankcase breather open to the outside environment like the LB7 does).Edited by: OC_DMAX

The other day i was driving around town, and i stoped in a parking lot of a store i was headed for....i smelt diesel (like somone had poured it out on the ground) at the time i didnt think much about it because of where i was in town...but now that you said somthing is there a good way that i could check this? it hasnt happend since then, so it may have been a fluke or whatever....just lookin for a good way to check with out having to go to the stealer

THANKS!!

Where does the sealing ball go once it is forced out of the injector?http://www.dieselplace.com/forum/smileys/smiley18.gif

Eric
is tech assist giving any info on this. Is it a case by case or will it be moved to a bulliten not a PI. Also do the replacements see the same issue?

I know what would happen, the crankcase would fill up with fuel until the engine ran away. Some people think that GM put the injectors outside the valve covers to make replacement easier, I think they did it so that it wouldn't fill up the engine with fuel and give you a runaway situation. The new engine needed to have a closed vent system, and the engineers probably said, well then no way should we leave this fuel system in a way that it could fill the crankcase with fuel and cause a possible runaway situation.
