If I'm thinking right the new Mecadees diesel is schedualed to go in '07. Are there any plans for the Cummins to be bumped up again before then?

just rumors. Dodge will not get rid of Cummins, as that would be suicide. However, I would not be surprised to see the MB engine offered as a second engine option on the HD trucks. It just makes sense because DCX owns MB, and they can sell the MB engines cheaper than wha they sell the Cummins for. So the Cummins is a $5500 option, it would not surprise me to see the MB engine as say a $3000 option. But that is speculation. Cummins is here to stay.

610ft. lbs of Torque according to the new Cummins newsletter. New model turbo made in Charleston, SC or England. Doubt Chrysler would dump such a successful product now made and assembled in America.

If the Cummins will stay how far will they take it. What I mean is: the engine has been around forever Ford and Chevy keep producing new diesels that untilize more and more modern technology. The Cummins is a great engine, but how long can it keep up? I agree that replacing the Cummins prematurely would be suicide. That motor is the primary reason that Dodge is still in busness.

I hear the Cummins has to disappear because of emissions.

Mercedes Diesel or Cummins..................... I will take the Mercedes any day over the Cummins................. Hands Down!! Anything the Cummins will do, the Mercedes can do better!!

Moving th Cummins up to 610 ft/lbs. would put it over the duramax currently @ 605. I also heard the Cummins would die out because of emissions.

WilliamBos-

Any diesel from any company has some big shoes to fill if they're going to replace the Cummins. I don't think any Mercedes will be able to live up the Cummins legend.

On your pickup you have staight pipes. Correct? Were you able to get rid of your cadiledic converter without interrfering with any sensors? Where did you find a 5" exhaust?

The early 04 305/555 engines have no cat. No egr. No glowplugs. Simple

Got my 5" from Rip Rook (http://www.protintnw.com/sa_dodge-exh.htm). Really great deal.

Hi,

The Cummins is good, but I dont consider it legendary. Mercedes has been building diesels for ever it seems, and have just a broad of a range of markets ( if not more ) than Cummins. If you look into other applications ( Agriculture ) for instance, and Cummins is just another engine. When you put them up against the likes of Perkins, SISU ( Valtra/AGCO ) , Mercedes, they have alot to learn. If one of these manufactures ( like Mercedes does ) would put these in a pickup, many a reply would be " Cummins? Oh yeah, I had one of those once......" Some people are afraid of change..........

say chrylsers contract with cummins is up in 2006. now lets say
ford wants to use them. would it be a high bidder situation? merely
speculation, just wondering how that would work. i dont see why the
cummins could not be made to pass emmisions. wil

Why would FORD switch? The PSD is just as good. And if Ford were interested, why did they sell their shares in Cummins ( they had 21%, DID NOT EVER OWN IT OUTRIGHT............) ?? But it sure would be interesting if there was a huge bidding war between Ford and Dodge..... If loyalty were a factor, I am sure they would stay with Dodge.. I am sure the evolution of the little 5.9 has hinged on the huge sucess of the dodge truck sales since these to companies hooked up!!

Take care

I believe the Cummins in a pickup is coming quickly to an end. There is
almost no doubt in my mind they will switch to Mercedes even if they
only do it partially at first. Sounds good to me. There are also some
sweet German automatics out there.

Hi,

The Mercedes will be miles ahead of the Cummins, and yeah some great German automatics!!

I have the Mercedes in my M2. A MBE-900 with 300/860. The truck weighs 14000lbs, and yields 14mpg empty. 10.5mpg pulling 14000lb 5th wheel at 68mph. The motor runs a overhead cam with six individual injector pumps. The motors are basically bullet proof. http://www.dieselplace.com/forum/smileys/hihi.gifDave

Why would FORD switch? The PSD is just as good.

if ford can get the problems they've had with the 6.0 ironed out then they have a good powerplant, but they even have rumors about going to a 6.4liter navistar engine for 06 year of the 07 model year

the cummins engine is a good powerplant also, but it is becoming aged. it can be made to meet emissions with C-EGR and cats and other stuff just as well as ...

once camless engines become avalable and popular, they will really help the emissions out. no need for an egr system on them, can all be done with the valves and ecm programing..

I believe a new navistar diesel is already in the making.

The cat is out of the bag. Not sure if Dodge will use it by Cummins has
revealed their new V8/V6 diesel to the public. There are pictures in
the latest issue of TDR magazine and a story in the latest Four Wheeler.

Aluminum heads, cast iron block, similar injection to current CR Cummins.

350hp/550ft-lbs fro the V8

270hp/400 for the V6

The V8 is in test mules now and the in-the-know guys are getting to drive it.

It is the first engine to meet 2007 EPA Tier II, Bin 5 emission standards. The cleanest like truck diesel worldwide.

No true Dodge Cummins owner would ever own a V8 engine with aluminum
heads; right? They would have to take back all the BS that they
have trashed out on the internet during the last several years.
What is the world coming too.http://www.dieselplace.com/forum/smileys/smiley17.gif

OK guys....I understand you may not care for the Benz Diesels....I'm a CTD guy too. I work on the Benz automotive engines. We don't see many problems with them. Period. They get better than advertised milage and run forever! Benz has always been good at using smaller displacement to get more power. I'd have to drive one before I'll say that I'd take the Benz engine over the Cummins.

The funny part....ALL the companies are having problems with the 07 emissions. Even Benz. Right now our current E-class 3.2L over head cam, Common Rail injected engine won't make it. It just came out for the 05 and 06 Model years. They are banking that the new fuel will burn clean enough to pass.

I cannot imagine a Dodge without a Cummins, but I think Hoot is right it is nearing its end:(

It'd be a shame to move away from the inline design, but I think they would benefit from some german engineering. What would be cool would be a displacement on demand in a diesel so that 30mpg could be a possibility and it would help the emission guys as well.

Lets see, Dodge trashes the Duramax yet they copy the CR fuel delivery design, Now they are planning to copy the aluminum heads, They also plan on going to a V-8. All that will be missing is the Dmax logo. If they keep this up a lot of Dodge owners will be have to switch to ford to get their steel heads or start enjoying a nice cusine of crow. ):h

All kidding aside though I agree the Cummins is one for the record books of great engines. Also on the plus side with the introduction of a shorter V-8 the Dodge diehards may have the luxury of a full Crew cab. This should promote sales in itself as most owners would appreciate the extra room.

But it'll still be Cummins not Isuzu
Dodge will have the larger cab next year (06 model) Remember... not everyone buys crew cabs to start with.

But abear... in many ways you are correct..... AAM axles, NV transfer case. Same inj system (Bosch) as the Dmax.

Has any one seen the specs on the MBE 926 330 HP, 1000 foot pounds of torque at 1300 rpm...one downside, the engine weighs 1235 lbs. (I looked at the detroitdiesel.com page).

I find it hard to believe Dodge would put a V8 diesel in its trucks as far as Cummins goes, they might as well use the Mercedes, isn't that a V8??
