: 2002 2500hd crew high speed vibration
PEVOMAN 11-05-2004, 06:12 PM Can anybody figure this out. I get a high frequency hum of a vibration coming from the rear of my duramax 02 crew at 76 to 81 miles an hour. After 81 the vibration goes away. At 80, i can start feeling it in the throttle peddle, it also gets louder right befroe it goes away. The tires are new dealer tires & the back two have just been rebalanced with no affect. The sound is like a low pitched(but loud)harmonic sound kinka like a vibrator(you can also feel it in the back glass) any ideas?

BlueCrew 04 D/A SB GMC 11-05-2004, 09:20 PM Did you check your rear end for lube?http://www.dieselplace.com/forum/smileys/hihi.gifhttp://www.dieselplace.com/forum/smileys/hihi.gifhttp://www.dieselplace.com/forum/smileys/hihi.gif
No Seriously it could be real low, some guys were saying to check rear differential for low, bearings start to make whining noise if they get dry, check for slow leaks. Edited by: BlueCrew 04 D/A SB GMC
GMC2500HD 11-05-2004, 10:45 PM Have them check the drive shaft. I had a 2002 and it use to do that and the drive shaft was out of balance. Also have them check the rear u-bolts on the springs, mine were loose and allowing the rear end to move around. Good luck..
modified 11-06-2004, 08:40 AM If the problem just started after the tire change, I'd bet it's the tires. Do you have spare tires, or could borrow some from someone, to verify if that's the problem?
If the problem was there before the tire change, then consider GMC2500HD's sugjestions.
leftmy8.1 11-06-2004, 10:54 AM Alot of times the kids doing the balance don't use the right adapter, or one that is worn. I had the same problem, had them balance the tires, went back pulled the tires and they were still out of balance. Best way to eliminate the tire is to recheck the balance. Pull them off the machine and then recheck the balance. The tire guy will look at you like your crazy but its the only way.

What was wrong with it? Anything you could see? If not, I heard that they put styrofoam or something inside the shaft to cut down on ringing. Sometimes the foam comes loose and throws the shaft out of balance. It would be interesting to put the shaft on a lathe and see if it is straight. If it is, it might pay to cut one end off and see if that is what happened.
mpl897 12-02-2004, 06:16 AM [B]UPDATE, took service manager for a ride and he says I need a new REAR END!!!
well this noise has been since new so, going in for a complete new rear end and tech bulletin for a/c if I can find # again. Lucky cause I got about 1.5 years left on factory warrenty. :)
PEVOMAN 12-02-2004, 10:09 AM To anwser the question if the driveshaft was under warrantee. Yes, but by who i don't know.(don't care) This was a GM certified used truck(3000 or 3 month warrantee) so i don't know if the dealership itself replaced it (since the problem was present from the day i bought it) All i know is it had what looked like a new steel shaft in it at first, they had it rebalanced & made it worse.(I found this out after i got it back..the first time, they didn't road test it fast enuff) Finally the dealership stole an aluminum shaft from another HD on their lot & put it under mine to see if that would solve it...& it did. They then asked me if i wanted to just keep the used aluminum shaft in it,...or wait for a (New) not rebuilt or rebalanced steel shaft. This along with the holiday (T-giving) & weekend would push back another week me getting back in my HD (that i owned for 3 weeks, but only actually drove for less than 1) this coupled with the fact that the dealer was a 2 hour round trip to get to...made me say "Leave it the way it is" Just replace the old u-joints in the shaft that was swaped. Personaly i think my truck(before i bought it) may have been involed in a another "swap" because i have talked to the original(only) other owner & he said it never had a vibration problem & the shaft was never touched while the owned it. Vin records confirm it. Oh well it's smooth sailing now!
I had a similar sound but it was at 45 to 55 mph. The dealer found it was the drive line angle that had changed. The offset angles on the U-joints had to large a variance. Dealer determined the leaf springs had flattened out from pulling my 4 horse goose neck trailer. End result, GM paid to have the springs re-arched and I paid to add an additional leaf. I also added Timbren rubber rides and the problem has not reocurred.
