Any of you GM techs have an idea what my problem is? I have a 2000 pontiac sunfire 2.2 three spd At and it doesn't start all the time. First it would start if you put the shifter all the way down in first and back to park it would start, or if you put in neutral. I figured it was the neutral safety switch so i changed that and adjusted that, the ignition switch on the column was changed not more than a week ago, thought everything was fine and the wife went to the BMV to get the new tags and it would not start. I played with the linkage on top of the trans and it started. I still think it is the neutral safety switch but it was adjusted and was running fine and then a couple of days later it won't start. I know the two bolts holding the neutral safety switch are tight. Any other ideas? I am about at my wits end with POS car. Any help would be greatly appreciated.

Could be the cable is getting stretched or frayed throwing it out of adjustment? Check the wiring for frays or breaks also, be sure the connectors have no corrosion and are tight. Hope that will help.

Check the battery/cables throughly. Many GM's from that time period had battery cable routing problems and would damage the batteries internally. Our 2000 Olds did it, and had the same symptoms until I replaced the battery, which was damaged internally from the cable stress.

Ground strap is another possible culprit.
