What kind of synthetic is safe to use in my front and rear differential? I have a locking rear end, so does that mean the two diffs will use a different fluid?

A Chilton's or Hayne's manual will tell you how much to use, but if you're parked on level ground you keep putting oil in the fill hole (near the mid point of the axle case) until it starts to come out that's when it's full. About 2 1/2 qrts for the 10 bolts and 3 1/2 to 4 qrts for the larger axles if I remember right, don't quote me. The front is easy it has a drain at the bottom and the fill plugs just a few inches above it. If your cover seal is good on the rear you might want to get one of those cheap hand pumps to remove the fluid from the fill hole without compromising the integrity of the rear cover seal.

Nothing like a fresh gasket on a drained diff. for sealing/cleaning and visual inspection.
