I have an 04 dmax with what sounded like a mechanical vibration. The only time I can hear it is at idle. I was underneath today looking when I hit the bottom of the allison pan and it sounds like something is loose inside the pan. Doesn't seem normal to me. Any ideas? I'm not a tranny wiz. Thanks.

Drop the pan and see what you find in there. I think that would be the first step. There is a chance that your internal filter fell off and is sitting in the pan, however unlikely that may be. If you hear something in there you should definitely find out what it is. If you dont want to pay for new fluid, drain the stuff thats in there into a brand new, totally clean 5 gallon bucket, and reuse it. I would personally not ever do that but know of a bunch of guys that do it all the time with no negative results.

The internal filter sits on tbe bottom of the pan so it cannot fall out. However, I have seen a number of times where an extra valvebody bolt ends up in the bottom of the pan (don't ask me how). That may be what you're hearing.

I changed out my tranny fluid and both filters yesterday and just like what Machinator said there was a bolt loose in the bottom of my pan. It kindof scared me for a few minutes, but after an hour or so of looking I never found an empty bolt hole. Like he said, that is probably all it is.

How the heck does an "extra" bolt end up in the pan? Is this common?

That trans must have been built on friday or monday. It may be that allison knows everyone is modding the trans and is throwing in an extra bolt just in case you need it.

And to think my wife doesn't believe me when I tell her the left over parts after a job were really extra ;)

Thanks Machinator. Just the filter.
Looks like you need a Filter-Loc. You could also go to a Deep Allison Pan...
