replace fuel filter, air filter
oil change, oil filter
flush/replace coolant
check power steering fluid
check brake fluid
check for exhaust leaks

injection pump; make sure cold-advance solenoid is working. if hard starts or lots of smoke, have the pump removed and tested and/or rebuilt.

test glow plugs (resistance test)
remove injectors and have them pressure tested

inspect rubber on dampener pulley

thats all I can think of off the top of my head...

Check/change/fix:

+ fluid in the front and rear diff
+ fuid in the transfer case and in the transmission
+ wires and hoses that may be sitting loose or rub on something; they may already show wear from that
+ front wheel bearings (eventually repack with grease (every 24k miles) )
+ rear wheel bearings (watch for leaks on them)
+ battery connections and clamps
+ all the belts

Take off the rear brake drums and check the brake pads, take the front brake pads out to check for cracked pads. Check the wear pattern on the metal side of the pads --- calipers can get sticky and may need a rebuild.

Find the grease nipples on the steering assembly and on the front driveshaft and regularly lubricate with a grease gun as needed.

Eventually replace the shocks. Take a look at the freeze plugs to see if they leak.

While flushing/replacing the coolant, check the hoses and eventually replace.

PS: You need a special socket to do the front wheel bearings. It`s not difficult though, just a lot of work.

How do you check the cold advance solenoid? It doesn`t get actually cold here, but somehow I doubt mine works.

Live in beaver bank ,huh? used to live just outside of shubenacadie myself...

as for the manuals,iv'e had luck with used book stores.shop around and you might find a gently used, complete set for your year,or something close.if you want to shell out some coin, try a dealer...they can order new ones.

if you have a problem, ask here.this site is an invaluable resource if your just starting out.see the FAQ's .

"While flushing/replacing the coolant, check the hoses and eventually replace."

I allways rip the hoses out and take a peak in side them to make sure they are not falling apart on the inside.

If anything, replace the top hose, that hose takes all the beating. I have never seen a lower hose fail yet, as its on the suction side, :D
