Has anyone ever seen a 6.5 humvee turbo set up on a 6.2?
I have came across a 6.5 hummer turbo setup that i am going to try to get set up on my 6.2.
This turbo sets on the back of the engine in the center. I am getting everything off the hummer.
My truck is a 89 crew cab 4x4 and it needs all the help it can get.

What?

It won't fit, they used it on the full size vans also and it sits at the back of the engine, where on a van, tons of room.

You need a setup of a pickup truck.

Wanna sell it? ;)

Yeah, wont fit. But lest ye be discouraged, you could always put on a body lift, and do some "firewall massaging".

With a sledge-hammer.

i'm not so sure it won't fit. I have been taking a few measurements and i'm gonna start setting some stuff on this week and see what happens.
firewall clearance will be the biggest issue. if i can get by that i think it will work.

Biggest issues besides clearance on the exterior of the engine is the oil supply and drain provisions (and pad) on the back of the block necessary for the turbo aren't on a 6.2.

Only late 96+ 6.5TD engines had the casting provisions on the block necesary for this setup.

Besides the above mentioned issues the intake manifold for this setup will not bolt to your engine either, the angle of the bolt holes in the heads are different than that of the truck engines.

It's, well, kinda a rascal.

Check out my classified ad in the Market Place for a BANKS turbo setup that works on H1 Hummers.

So even if I have 6.5 heads('95 vintage), to put on my 6.2, I still cannot get a Van/Hummer turbo setup to work in my '88 van?

Here is why it won't work on a 6.2L.

See the casting near the vacuum pump mount?

This material isn't on a 6.2. The block pictured doesn't fully allow for the rear mounted turbo, because it hasn't been drilled and machined for it, although all the later 6.5's have this casting.

So, no this turbo setup will not work on a 6.2L even if you change the heads.

For a G-Van or P-Van

You could if you swapped in a whole 6.5TD out of a Hummer or Savanna Van.

You'd have better luck making your own setup out of using the Hummer/Van Exhaust manifolds (to point exhaust upwards). The use a "Y" pipe then to a T4 turbo flange or even a T3 turbo flange. Select the turbo of your choice, probably a T04B with a P-Trim wheel, or many others (Banks uses a T04B).

Then make a downpipe out of the engine compartment/doghouse.

For pressure from the turbo either make an intake hat, buy a Banks Pressure Chamber, or get a Peninsular Intake Hat matched with a Truck 6.5TD intake manifold, whoolah!

Thought of this setup multiple times when driving an '83 6.2 Conversion van I have in the family.

But, they bought a whole Banks Setup that was made for the vans (rare).

So, I have to build em an engine and then put the turbo on it, cause their original engine has over 200k HARD miles on it and enough blow-by to air up a tire off of, but it runs/starts surprisingly well.

Why can't anything just be easy?.........But the custom method you describe doesnt sound to complicated. Back to the drawing board.......

Not mentioned in my proposed custom setup is the oil pressure and oil drain.

Oil pressure can be tapped the exact same way as the Banks setup uses, could even cheat and get their hardware.

The oil drain will need to consist of re-inforced stainless steel 1/2" ID hose or copper tubing, or soft steel tubing to route from the turbo to the oil pan, above oil level.

Or, better yet, weld a bung on the back side of a valve cover or side of a valve cover and use that for the turbo oil return.

Nope, thats why I am going remote mount in the winter, tons of room under the vans, :D

Turbovanman,
I was thinking of the same thing originally, when it was suggested here a few months back. Thought it was an unnecessary expense if I could just bolt on a system I found in the boneyard. Looks like alot of additional fabrication either way. So I guess it's time to revisit the remote mount idea again. If you have any research you could share, I'd appreciate a PM, so we dont hijack JKC's thread any further(my apologies JKC)I also want to do this over the coming fall/winter months, so maybe we can get thru this together.

why remote mount it?

You could simply mount it 'above' the engine, there is room above the intake manifold, etc when you get the the big air cleaner out of the way.

The T04B turbo's are pretty small in size.

Wishin I actually had a van to help design this setup...

But, then again, glad I don't have one :D

There is no room under the hood or dog house, maybe for a tiny turbo but a TO4B is still pretty big.

Sure, I just have to price out the oil return pump, that will be the biggest expense, everything else I have. :D

Yacthcare don't worry about the hijack. I have got alot of usefull info on this swap.
Although it is kinda frustrating about this turbo setup. I got a heck of a deal on it but it looks like i will have alot of parts i can't use.
Oh well back to the drawing board.

I forgot to add, I am sure the G-van turbo has been done but I bet its tight under there.
