Hey all. Into the dealer today. There was a max in for
injectors. Two week waiting period. But they were able to
get a set from another dealer.
Truck had 183,000 KLMs on it.
Quickly talking to tech. Was back in school for a bit.
Discussion came up about injectors. GM ALMOST seems to think it
is poor metal quality for injector failure. But still blame poor
fuel for failures. Also, they seem to think the fuel filter
should be changed every 10,000 KLMs. My 02 manual says every
40,000KLMs.
For those interested.
I've been doing the fuel filter every 20K. Sure seems like its just a matter of time for these injectors. 183K is getting out there but there is still another 120K left on the extended injector warranty. I have a little bit of a hard time on the metal quality point. It is my understanding that bosch mnfg's the injectors for both GM and the Cummins. I don't think they have a metal source for the cummins injector and another for the DMAX injectors. I suppose it could be the physical differences in injectors that make the metal's physical properties requirements different. I expect the mnfg processes are very similar as well. I am planning for this truck to last 400 to 500K - it has to when it takes 6 to 7 years to pay for the thing (at least for some of us) so I don't know what to think. My preference is to have the OEM ones last the whole time but on the other I almost want to see the failure before the 300K warranty is out to get the updated version in. http://www.dieselplace.com/forum/smileys/smiley19.gif

I spoke early this summer with some of the CAA drivers here where I live. Their tow trucks are all 3500 Duramax - the collection of 12 trucks according to them all had problems and they were told to swap filters every 10K as well. They said that GM found the cause was with tiny pieces of the filter paper coming loose and blocking the injectors (again they stated that GM took some of the injectors away to inspect and found this to be the case). Same time line on changes, but a very different explanation. I tend to believe this story...

I think you best check your owners manual again, eh.
The 2002 manual states that the fuel filter should be replaced every 24000km or 15000miles, page 7-11 and again 7-14.
As EnerMax stated, I also change my fuel filter every 10000km or 6200miles and before any extended trips over 5000km, plus like most Duramax owners I always carry a spare filter.
I hope you use an additive in the fuel.
good luck

Been awhile since I have been in the owners manual. Had the
discussion with the place where I used to get the filter done.
Lots of dirty finger prints on the page that had the milage for filter
in it.
Coulda swore it said 40,000KLMs. Do use Stanadyne's Performance Formula.

I have a 01 with 210000km and not a bit of trouble. If the injectors are going to fail I hope they do it soon. This truck just never misses a beat. I run power up fuel additive with every tank and am getting a reliable 600 to 650 km on a tank full.

Must be all highway. I'm semi consistant around 500 ish,
combination city and highway. My best tank was 772.9 KLMs.
Pretty well all highway. Worked out to 28.83 CDN mpg's.
Good to hear about the milage on the truck with no issues.
