: Another question on a 2005 duramax purchase
rez0469 08-04-2007, 03:15 PM I am new to the diesel community but I am looking at an 05 duramax crew cab long box with heated leather, 6 disc cd changer, moonroof and headrest monitors in it. they want $23,500 for it with 98,000 miles, do you guys think that truck is worth it? It has a few minor scratches from towing a camper. I really like it, I drove it and all seemed good. back seats were barely used. Let me know what you guys think and if you have other questions.
LilWic 08-04-2007, 04:05 PM Seems like a lot of money for the miles on it. Have you checked the bluebook value on it?
rez0469 08-04-2007, 11:27 PM KBB has retail listed at $31,500 for the condition it is in. Is that a lot of miles for the body? I know the motor can handle it but I didn't know if there were things on the body to look at that go worng.
The price doesn't sound bad. I have a 05 equipped like that and it listed for over 49k. I paid a little over 37k new for mine two years ago. Look at what you would have to put into it for tire, brakes, fluid changes to get it up to speed and deduct it from the asking price. See what happens.
rez0469 08-05-2007, 01:05 PM They claim they are a one price dealership so they won't budge much if at all, it is at a ford dealership. I was thinking of just having them fix the scratches or something, they did a 115 point inspection and fixed a bunch of stuff on it, I was shown the sheet already. I drove there and expected to trade in my car but they said they would give me $9500 for a mint 2002 Trans Am WS6 with 54,000 miles when KBB says its worth 15,500 fir trade in. Now my friend should be buying my car.
rez0469 08-05-2007, 01:06 PM Ray, I see you are from Maple Grove, I am from Northfield, the truck is in White Bear Lake at Tousley.

Nice car your selling. I buy all my mustang parts from Tousley due to the discounts. I know the parts guy I deal with is great. Don't know anything about the salespeople.
Did you do a Carfax on it? Did you put it up on lift and check it out? Look for overspray?
Since your trading in your car, you might want to consider a new one. Usually better financing and warranty is better on the 07's. You should be able to get a killer deal on a new one.

Great price:) :) :)
rez0469 08-05-2007, 03:02 PM My friend may be buying my car from me, I find out this coming week. I don't think there is any way I can afford the payments on a brand new one. That would be about $700 a month if I am lucky. My dad owns a shop here in Northfield and we get discounts at all the dealerships around here. If you need anyone to help fix any gas vehicles, my dad is rel cheap and honest.
That's a nice looking truck. Take the VIN and go to your local Chevy dealer and see what the service history is. I would check that everything works when your driving it and that the oil pressure and coolant temp are OK. Oil pressure at 2100 rpm should be 55-60 lbs hot and around 25 at idle in drive.

Make sure the title is clean.
Since your dad has a shop, at least you can do your work. But, you don't want to buy a used vehicle and have problems. Do they warranty it for 30 days and will take it back?
Just checked the carfax. Commercial fleet vehicle. If it looks and drives good, I wouldn't be afraid of the miles. Probably depreciated on the tax roll and time to buy another one.
rez0469 08-05-2007, 03:43 PM Yea, they showed me the carfax report. It is sold as is, I will see if they will take it back but I think statewide I have a 3 day return since it is not over 3 years old. It looks good, as good as any I think, the leather is a little worn out though on the drivers seat. I think it is awesome. The long box is not what I need but it will work. lupient has a nice one too. Here is the link to it. Tell me which one you would rather purchase.

I don't see a link. When I searched over on Lupient, I didn't see a diesel.
paint94979 08-05-2007, 06:03 PM Take into account this, it has 97,xxx miles. Which means the 100,000 mile factory engine warranty is almost gone. So either bit the bullet and wait to see a better truck with less miles, or buy it, run the damn thing with the oil plug out and wait til she runs out of oil then get a brandnew engine(I am not advising this in any way im just giving options.) I would get the newest year and the truck with the least miles. IMHO
rez0469 08-05-2007, 06:42 PM hey paint, that actually is a good idea that I never thought of. Is it better to have a brand new engine that you aren't going to tow with for a few years or better to have an engine that has had some towing done already?

These trucks are built to tow regardless if they;ve been used to tow with before or later. I wouldnt waste money in a truck with nearly 100,000 miles, But do what you feel you can afford. Just keep in mind that a lot of damage can be done from 0 miles to 100,000 miles. good luck.
Isn't the 6.6 Duramax designed for 500k miles? Mine is just getting broke in good this year and has 34k on it now. Tows like a dream. Me, I wouldn't take less then 30k minimum for mine as that's 60% of MSRP after two years.
44k miles a year is a lot of highway driving.
rez0469 08-05-2007, 08:09 PM Ray, if you go to auto trader and look up 03 GMC sierra with leather within 75 miles of 55057 you will see the one I am talking about at lupient
rez0469 08-05-2007, 08:10 PM it won't let me add that link in

so are you saying $24,000 is a good price or you wouldn't waste your time on it? As you saw with the carfax, it has only been used for towing campers, thats why I can't decide what to do. It dies have a lot of miles but it is still in very good shape other then the drivers seat. The truck on auto trader is a red sierra with leather and 100,000 miles, its an 03. Looks perfect
Pretty much full retail price on the 2003. You might way to check the 2001-2004 LB7 boards for opinons. Still high miles.
You can pickup a base silverado 4x4 new for the price range you looking at. Gas is cheaper then diesel right now and if you not towing a lot, it would work fine and you got a warranty, way less maintenance cost.
I always trade my pickups in after 3 years or when the warranty is about to expire. I'd rather pay more for the payment, then have the truck in the shop getting serviced and paying for it.
Or, you could work another job part-time, save more and get the truck you really want.

I like my diesel because I tow 7k plus a lot during the summer. Otherwise, I would probably have an Avalanche. My 1500K's were Ok towing, but they had to work. I had 91, 95, 98, 2001 1500K's and they were Ok. Each one was better then the previous one. I think its the same way with the 2500HD's. So, do you want an older truck, or newer?
rez0469 08-05-2007, 08:48 PM there is one more I was lookin at, it was on craigslist.org in the msp area, it is $24,000 with 69,000 miles on it, is the extra torque noticeable from the 03 to 05? I don't want to spend a ton of money on one but I want a diesel for the convenience of having one so if I want to tow something which I plan to in the future then I will be able to without a problem.
rez0469 08-05-2007, 08:52 PM I will probably be towing a boat next year, I may have my own or I may be able to use my dads. its a pretty big boat, he has a 2000 silverado 1500 and it gets about 12mpg towing. I have a feeling that in the future, gas prices are going to be higher then the diesel prices and I want something I can make go fast with a lot of power and still get good gas mileage for the size truck that it is. My trans am is fun but the baby is due in march, plus I am still paying on it and I can't drive it in winter, I didn't plan on moving back to MN after I moved away for the Navy but I did. It has 393hp and 375ft lbs without the nitrous.
Talking about this one?
http://minneapolis.craigslist.org/car/388353706.html
Talk him down to 25k and it would be decent price.
rez0469 08-05-2007, 08:59 PM No, it was one with no price listed for an 03 but he called me and told me it was 24,900 he wanted and won't go less then 24,000. I may just lease the 07 silverado 1500, I can get it for 350 a month fully loaded with everything, very nice and low payments and maybe lease or buy a duramax in a couple years

One of my clients just retired from the Navy. He was a Master Chief I believe. I love Trans-ams, but the Mustang is getting retired and a 07 Z06 is in the cards next.
I think the baby will take most of your time and money. :)

Chevy has 0 percent financing. 16 dollars per thousand. So, 20k loan would be 320. Not sure about leasing. My brother was almost burned when he turned in his lease Blazer. They tried to stick him with paying for a door ding saying it wasn't normal wear and tear. They made a mistake and send the vehicle to auction before he could check it, so they couldn't make him pay. Sometimes the law works in your favor.
rez0469 08-05-2007, 09:57 PM that is on brand new right? I am debating on whether leasing a $38,000 (leather, 20 inch rims, bose, tow package, Z85, 5.3 liter with fuel management system and pretty much everything you can imagine)vehicle for $359 a month or buying a $24,000 dollar truck is a better deal. $24000 is about $440 a month right?

24k is 384 a month. I started out with a base regular cab 4x4(91) and worked my way up to the current truck by paying off early and trading in.
I like to own myself. With a kid on the way, I'd go for function and not the high-end package.
rez0469 08-05-2007, 10:19 PM That is actually the package that is the cheapest to lease at my local dealership.$24,000 with 0% is that much a month about? I meant for a used truck I would pay $24,000 for a duramax and the lowest interest would be 5.75% unless it was brand new
mmangels22 08-05-2007, 10:50 PM duramax engines will last forever but a 2 year old truck with 98 k on it is too many miles. you are probably better off getting an older truck with the same mileage on it.
rez0469 08-06-2007, 02:08 AM Does anyone know if you can feel the torque difference between the 03 and the 04.5? If i buy an extended warranty for that truck will it still not be worth my time do you think? I found an 03 with 100,500 and that is a short box instead of long box, that may be a real good truck but I am not sure.
Turbine 08-10-2007, 09:23 PM Hi Guy's,
My first post as I am a newby.
I just picked up my 04 Duromax for $28,900.00
It had 119,00 KM on it.(71,400 miles).
I think they are certainly in the ball park.
bertman911 08-12-2007, 03:57 PM And I was thinking of asking $35,000 for mine..........with only 29,000 miles......
Guess if you find the right buyer huh.
