I've been running stanadyne additive for about a year now and I buy six monthes worth at a time. I'm on my last bottle of the stuff (6 months old) and I'm getting smoke out the tail pipe when I get on it hard. The smoke is tannish in color. Power and milage is the same and I'm not using any oil. Anybody else experiance this?

Which formula? I'm using the lubricity formula and haven't seen any smoke issues, current bottles are getting close to 6 months since purchase, don't know how old they are though.

It may be more of a factor related to colder outside air temp this time of year and air moisture.

You might want to provide some additonal information on location, and if this occurs only when the truck is warming up.

I get a tannish cloud out the pipe when I get on mine but the soot in the tail-pipe is always black. http://www.dieselplace.com/forum/smileys/smiley5.gif

I don't think you should blame the additive, I have used stanadyne, FPPF, and and a couple of others for three years without any visual problems.

Start looking for another problem if it's that bad.

good luck.

Its performance formula. I live in northern Illinois. It started in September when I started my last bottle that is about six months old. Temps have been in the 55-65 range. I've never got on it when the engine is cold, always at normal operating temp. When I get on it and it smokes I'll get on it again at the next stop or punch it going down the road and no smoke. Its almost like it loads up? I just ran a tank without the additive and all I got was minor black smoke like normal. Like I said, the engine runs fine, same power and same milage.

The soot in the tile pipe is black as coal.

I called Stanadyne today asking them how long the shelf life was for the Performance formula.

The lady I spoke with said they have never done any of that type of testing, but they have received customer feedback.

Based on the customer feedback, the product should be good for over a year. They have had customers reporting use of the product that was 3 years old or older without any problems. The product needs to be stored at normal temps for longer life. That is, no extreme heat or repeated freezings.

She has not had any reports of smoking issues with older bottles of the product. Some folks reported that it has turned a darker brown after aging, but did not have any adverse impact when used. It may loose some of its effectiveness as it gets older.

She said they do not date stamp the bottles, but do put a bottle fill date on the box. After the call, I looked at the box that contained my pint bottles, but could not find any dates.

The stuff I have was purchased a couple of months ago, so I cannot offer any first hand experience using older bottles.

Funny--I just had a similar thing happen last night.

I use Primrose additive.

By accident--I almost triple dose my tank--forgetting that I had put some in at fillup--and then putting more in when I got home.

That night--I was out and about--and in Southern California the temp is starting drop--about 48deg--and sure enough--a Tan like smoke came out when I punched it.

I have never seen that before.

I am hoping it is due to my overdosing the tank and the cooler temps--I also noticed the truck temp did get up to normal 205 degrees--even with 65mph freeway driving.

I was using Power Service's Diesel Cleen. I had some smoke,
couple of times. I THINK I may have added too much aswell.
Just a guess, though.

I have noticed the last month or so that the smoke is more pronounced when I step on it hard than it has in the past. I have been using Stanadyne for the past 1 1/2 years without a problem to date. No smoke at startup, it seems more like a buildup that only happens on occasion.

Thanks for everyones input so far: I've never over dosed with the additive, but I put in 30gal dose of additive and avg. about 28-29 gals per fill up. You wouldn't think this would matter. The owner of the shop I bought the stuff from said that dosing twice what is call for per gal. is a waste of additive.

I've noticed the color of smoke changes or looks different depending on
the time of day. The way the light hits it makes it appear different
and now that fall is here I notice the smoke more. I'm thinking with
the colder temps the smoke dissipates slower so you get a better look.
Jmho.
