: Think I blew the turbo?
Josh2002cc 08-03-2007, 01:48 AM Well today I was cruising along with the pedal to the floor shortly after I loaded up a smoker tune with my EFI and about 100 feet into my drive I hear a loud "BOOOOM" and then a final puff of black smoke and then followed by pure white smoke. I immedietly think head gasket and maybe more. I get out and evaulate my truck....heres what I found. Black oil running from exhaust pipe, oil running from the hole in my weld where my muffler delete pipe is and a massive amount of white smoke. So I am leaning twords turbo but need some other ideas first. As I limped the truck home I noticed oil pressure dropped and the light came on, I shut it off within seconds. No codes or trans limp. Thanks
Tolliwacker 08-03-2007, 10:25 AM Sorry to say, you are gonna pay if you are gonna play!
Sorry to hear it, keep us posted..............
duramax 2001 08-03-2007, 10:32 AM Sounds like a classic turbo kersplosion..... Looks like you are now in the same class as Ben and some of the other true motorheads.:ro)
I don't envy you right now. As I understand and read that is a B%$# to change out the turbo.
I did see an aftermarket in the Marketplace for sale though..... May as well give her a little extra power if you have to do the job anyway!!:D
IBDMAX'IN 08-03-2007, 10:51 AM Definently go with an aftermarket turbo if you have the coin. Stock turbos are a pain to change!!!
If you need to get back on the road right away and don't have the money for an after market turbo, give me a shout. I have a stock turbo sitting in my garage, if you need it to get back up and running, all you have to do is ask.............and pay shipping! :)
Cheers,
Wade

What a generous offer... :beerchug:
Josh2002cc 08-03-2007, 11:52 AM Wow is all I can say, I have never talked to Wade before and he offers such a thing for me, all I can say is WOW. I appreciate the offers and wishes guys, well see more tonight.
IBDMAX'IN 08-03-2007, 11:57 AM It's all about helping out when you can :thumb:
Just remember the offers that you had when you were down if you see another in need  .
Good luck,
Wade
blnagel 08-03-2007, 12:11 PM So you blew your turbo?
Wife jealous?
Could not resist!!!!!!!!!!!!
Josh2002cc 08-03-2007, 12:25 PM Not sure about the whole wife thing, but my g/f was in the truck when it happened. She looked at me as I said "oppps" So she drove me to work today lol. Atleast I was on time!
fireresource 08-05-2007, 11:00 PM so are we upgrading or settling for stock?
sarollis 08-06-2007, 02:45 AM Bummer! How much power do you think you are/were putting out?
Josh2002cc 08-06-2007, 10:14 AM I have no real idea how much power I was making but I know it isn't a big number. I think it was just too much boost. I have a KD boost valve and I wasnt watching the boost quage when it poped so I am pretty sure this was a "overboost" issue more than a "excessive" power issue. I am going with a stock until that Wade from ATS Diesel was nice enough to offer up, I really have no plans to upgrade my trubo as I dont want my internals to go boom as well.
sparky1562 08-06-2007, 01:10 PM so are we upgrading or settling for stock?
The girlfried or the Truck?:D
Josh2002cc 08-06-2007, 02:18 PM I'm down with both, anyone up for trades?
Durallymax 08-06-2007, 02:49 PM You could go mild with the BD Supermax or aurora 2K or 3K. They arent overkill for boost.
110crash 08-06-2007, 08:43 PM :funnypost :Nothing_f So you blew your turbo?

Honestly, I am not sure I fully understand what they are trying to say...what does "Blow your turbo" mean in street terms? Like did I just blow my load............................of cash
Josh2002cc 08-10-2007, 12:38 AM Well got the turbo ready to be pulled on wedseday night. Took about 2 hrs to get all the junk outta the way. I have been soaking the bolts on the turbo in PB Blaster since then. I went out tonight to pull the bolts on the back of the turbo on the exhaust flange and they must be on very tight because I could not get 1 not even 1 to budge. So to all the guys that take these things out often and quickly what do you do to make it easier. I tryed wrenches, I tryed a short ratchet with a hammer to strike the handle with and I tryed a flex wratchet with no prevail. I will be back at it tomm night so any tips would be great...well all those besides the normal your going to bust your knuckles!
Josh
Tolliwacker 08-10-2007, 01:09 AM Get with Adam, he said he had to spring for a good quality set of sockets, and something else to get at the bolts, so give him a PM and see what he says, he just did the poor mans turbo swap.
also, this site rocks, blow a turbo, and no queer jokes, just an offer of a free turbo to get up and running........:ro) :ro) :ro) :ro) :ro) :ro) :ro)
sledhed 08-10-2007, 01:22 AM There ARE great people in the world!
:)
Mr.FiXiT,Jr. 08-10-2007, 03:11 AM Use a socket, ratchet, and a ratchet strap over to the fender bracket. Thats how I did it. Worked ok, kinda hard to keep strap on ratchet though.
Josh2002cc 08-11-2007, 05:53 PM Well after about 2 hrs in the garage with the help of my friend whos a mechanic at a bobcat dealership the turbo came out in less than 2 hrs. Its now sitting on the floor and awaiting for the new one to arrive. No real troubles although I did call Adam(malibu795) for help on the oil return line, he quickly pointed out how to remove it and that was it, out she came. Thanks to all the guys helping me out with all the information and to Wade at ATS for setting me up real sweet! Thanks guys, Will keep you posted.
monel_funkawitz 08-11-2007, 07:15 PM See any damage on the turbo, like a popped turbine or anything? You'll have to post some pics of the damage for bragging rights.
x2 on IBDMAX'IN for helpin' a bruther in need.
01Duramax6spd 08-11-2007, 08:40 PM You just getting the stocker from Wade?
Sorry to hear it went. Mine lasted 154K and the last 10K were very abusive and hot  .
If you ever upgrade go with a GT40.
Josh2002cc 08-11-2007, 09:09 PM Going with a stock unit, saving money for a trans at this point not a turbo :(
so oh well, just have to roll with it. The intake side of the turbo wheel was bent inside the housing missing a few blades. Once out, we noticed the bearing was trashed as well. I will get pics up soon.
monel_funkawitz 08-12-2007, 09:30 AM I'd make SURE that you didn't ingest any turbine fragments into the engine. Fragging hot sides don't bother me, but I get scared when I frag a compression turbine. I may be over zealous, but I pull the intake and heads when this happens around me. I've pulled chunks out, and have seen nasty things happen when I don't.
Ben46a 08-12-2007, 09:47 AM well Id pull the intercooler and boots and clean that out, but i doubt anything big enough to hurt the engine would go through the intercooler. Weve changed several failed chargers on other intercooled engines and never had any problems with pieces going through the intercooler.
C.A.P 08-12-2007, 12:12 PM Clean the cooler real well too
malibu795 08-12-2007, 12:20 PM x2 on the cooler bro...... mainly if there is oil in the turbo discharge pipe
zathynsdad 08-12-2007, 12:42 PM Sorry to hear this happened to you Josh (It must really suck havin to go w/out your DMAX:Pshyco: ).
But at least we have some wicked awesome people on here trying to help out.:ro) :ro) :ro)

Josh2002cc 08-12-2007, 01:07 PM So whats all involved in pulling the intercooler out? Does the front grille and all that need to be undone? I looked it over and didnt really see how it came out. Thanks guys you all rock!

You dont need to remove the grille. All you need to do is take the top cover thing off, remove the plastic around the top off the fan which is 4 10mm bolts and for plastic clip things like the cover has in it(2 on each side), then remove the fan and clutch(cant remember size), then there is two bolts that hold the cooler in place( I believe they are 12mm). Remove and clean. Pretty simple. Hope that helps.

Thanks, sounds easy enough. Anyone know the sizes or the trick to the fan? Is it reversed or standard threads?
Mr.FiXiT,Jr. 08-12-2007, 08:39 PM Thanks, sounds easy enough. Anyone know the sizes or the trick to the fan? Is it reversed or standard threads?
Standard thread, Take a wrench that fits the nut and hit it with a big hammer. Might take a few swings, but works.
Mr.FiXiT,Jr. 08-12-2007, 08:49 PM Also, now that I think about it, I think the wrench for the fan is a 1 7/16.
Josh2002cc 08-12-2007, 09:09 PM Great thanks alot, I will definatly be pulling this tomm and having our local radiator shop boil it and get'er all cleaned up ready to go.
Tolliwacker 08-12-2007, 10:03 PM There is a fan clutch removal tool that uses a Air hammer/chisle, so use the wrench and then use the air hammer on the wrench, and it will make easy work of it.
I used the tool before, and it was a MIRACLE I thought, because I had so much troubkle in the past.
Josh2002cc 08-12-2007, 10:36 PM Where can I find this tool?
Tolliwacker 08-12-2007, 11:15 PM I do not know, Adamcole and I did his waterpump, and he showed up with it, and it worked great.
I plan to make a wrench with a hook at the end, cut out of 3/16 steel with a plasma cutter, and use the air chisle just like the tool we used. It is a kit, and I did not get the name off of it, but some other folks on here probably do!
Josh2002cc 08-12-2007, 11:22 PM I have done a few waterpumps and I dont mind the hammer and wrench method...but I am always up for buying a new tool especially if it comes in a handy blow molded plastic case, cant get enough of them oh the shelf now can ya? I think they look pretty sitting there even tho I never use them...im goofy about tools i guess.
Tolliwacker 08-12-2007, 11:24 PM it is a man thing...........................

I call it a "insurance policy" costs me about $30 a week to the snap on dealer and the way I justify it is, if left un-opened in original packaging they shouldnt lose too much value. Like I said, Wierd :duh:

Josh2002cc 08-20-2007, 12:36 AM Well I got a chance to take some pics of the turbo today. Its pretty messed up. I got the new turbo in and all thats left is to tighten down the up pipes to the pedastal and then the exhaust flange. I will finish up tomm. night after work. In the process of pulling the fan, I managed to put a hole in the radiator, so that set me back $75 for a repair. I also took the IC to a shop to have boiled and they claim they pulled several small steel parts out as well. They informed me that the tanks on each side were leaking a small amount and it would require some time to cut open and re-weld her up. They went ahead and put some kinda sealant on it to get me going. Said it most likely was leaking for day one but who knows. I guess its not that much of a leak as they said it was a minor issue and I pry wouldnt notice any differance. Thanks to specialagentPK for the resizing of the pictures.
Joshua
lancerdually 08-20-2007, 07:02 AM Again, I see why I joined this site, everyone is awesome. Sorry about your luck with the turbo Josh but glad to hear you got it fixed back up again. Wade, dude you are one awesome dude helping a fellow DMaxer out like that is over the top. Only in America!
Northerner 08-20-2007, 09:30 AM Ouch Dude. Turned into an excellent thread though. Thanks for the pictures!
SBCNX20 08-20-2007, 10:06 AM That thing got WAY hot !!!
Josh2002cc 08-20-2007, 02:36 PM That thing got WAY hot !!!
Curious why you think it got hot, I bet it did just curious what are the signs its got hot?
jmg343 08-20-2007, 02:41 PM Where you watching your pyro at all? What were the temps?
Josh2002cc 08-20-2007, 02:43 PM Where you watching your pyro at all? What were the temps?
No, this is a direct result of not watching my guages....I was mesmorized by all the smoke I was blowing around! I have no idea what the temps or boost numbers were.
jmg343 08-20-2007, 02:45 PM Im willing to bet the temps were very high.
myojunk 08-20-2007, 03:09 PM Im willing to bet the temps were very high.
wounder if they were this high....
specialagentPK 08-20-2007, 03:23 PM I have seen that on mine all too many times.
Josh2002cc 08-20-2007, 03:33 PM wounder if they were this high....
Quit grounding the guage out.
jmg343 08-20-2007, 04:59 PM Ive got a 2000* gauge and Ive seen it pegged a time or two. Its a wonder my turbo is still alive.
Josh2002cc 08-21-2007, 02:13 AM Well got it running tonight. Seems great no issues at all. I appreciate all the help during the rebuild, especially to Wade at ATS diesel for supplying me the turbo, Adam (malibu795) for the help on the phone, and Colin for shipping me a downpipe so quickly. Thanks alot guys!
Duramaxdude03 08-21-2007, 08:50 AM let us know how she ran
Josh2002cc 08-22-2007, 11:28 AM Well, 2 days after completing the job shes running great. I had a minor exhaust leak at the downpipe Vband clamp but thats been taken care of. I currently am running a small tune and getting about 23lbs of boost. I adjusted my boost vavle out to be safe and plan on adjusting it some more to get alittle more boost out of it maybe up to 28 or so. I wanna be on the safe side. Turbo sounds great meaning no nasty noises or clunks or booms so were all good there. Truck kinda smells like oil, but will pry go away once it burns it out the exhaust pipe.
xcablb7 08-22-2007, 09:35 PM  how many miles were on yours when it blew ? i'm kinda lucky my turbo and exhaust lit up like those gay undercar lights at my last pull and the turbo is still ok. (long hard pull at 1680*). got hot enough to make my polished tip turn blue
Durallymax 08-22-2007, 11:23 PM 1680 sled pulling?? Thats nothing.
Josh2002cc 08-23-2007, 09:17 AM  how many miles were on yours when it blew ? i'm kinda lucky my turbo and exhaust lit up like those gay undercar lights at my last pull and the turbo is still ok. (long hard pull at 1680*). got hot enough to make my polished tip turn blue
right shy of 129,000 miles.
xcablb7 08-24-2007, 09:17 AM 1680 for a pull that lasted over 2 min is nothing ?
