Not to beat a dead horse here, but i want more rumble from the exhaust. Not insanly wake up the neighbors loud, but more then the stock system gives me. I really dont like the crackel and flutter of some of the straightpipes i have heard on other truck (mainly psd's)

So here is what im after:

- I dont want to purchase a exhaust kit
- Not crazy loud
- Dont want drone in cab, but ok to hear more exhaust noise
- Dont want the crackle at high rpm's
- I do like some turbo whistle

What should i do?

- Take off cat?
- Take off muffler?
- Take off both?

Truck is a 07 LBZ Crew cab short bed with a 5" tip ;)

What tools do you have? I hacked hole in the side with a plasma cutter and sliced out the internal baffles. Didnt make much more noise.....but a lil. The best part was it was free :D Dont try using a sawsall......blades will die a quick death. air cut off wheel for the skin on the muffler and torch for the internal tubes if you must :D

Cat will quiet it down quite a bit. Maybe jam a rod down it and try to woller it out a bit. The tail pipe assembly comes off pretty easy.

I have no problem cutting things out. if the cat needs to go... its gone. Same with the muffler. No plasma, but i know how to cut and weld some pipe......

Then start slicing and :grd:

Might need a finger stick or some programing means to not pop a code if you ditch the cat.

You may have cackle with a 3.5" stright pipe system? I dont know since I have larger exhaust. Dont have a cackle.....will have a crazy whooshing/hoover on crack/screaming midget noise to it at heavy throttle around 15 psi or so. Not so much like a turbo.....the LBZ has its own sound. Have a sound clip if you wish to PM me your email. Its of my 5" straight exhuats (no cat or muff)but it may give you an idea.

If you have the tools I'd start with the muffler first. You can slice out the baffles or just replace it with pipe. I mentioned the baffle approack becasue it is free. Otherwise you gota buy some pipe :D

I would just install an aftermarket and be done with it. You can do a 4" pretty cheap with no cat (unless you have to have it) or a cat delete for inspection purposes and then do a muffler or muffler delete.

Do the blades do okay on the exhaust pipe?

Never sliced the exhaust pipe....but I would bet by the time you get done bending blades and chewing em up on the pipe you would wish you just bought a cheapy air cut off from harbor freight or the like. Air cut offs are realy handy tools and every garage should have one. JMO :)

From my own experience the exhaust is not that bad a cut with a sawzall as long as you don't get into any weld. Thats where I started to chew a blade up.

Ok, thanks for the input. Im not worried about cutting anything though, i have plenty of tools to get that job done. More of looking for opinions on taking the cat, the muffler, or both out.

If i remove the muffler and leave the cat will it sound the same as taking the cat and leaving the muffler? What is going to give me a throaty sound without it being obnoxious?

Start with the muff. See if you like that. Then ditch the cat if you want more noise. JMO :)

You will get more noise from removing the cat than the muffler, from what I have read, but Phil has the best advice to start with the muffler and go from there. I have a 4" staight system and its not to loud unless you stomp on it the wow.

I'm gonna try this today, muffler gone keeping the cat. I'll let you know how its sounds on the LLY, using a sawzall, well see how the blades hold up.

With the help of y'all I was able to find a great way to start with the exhaust options. went to motor trucks and got some stainless flex, and some nice clamps, cut the muff out and wala, sound is mello in and out of the cab, but does give a better tone. Options I am thinking of are 5''custom cat back w/o muffler. cheaper and should be pretty mild.

did the same things today, only used band style clamps and 3.5" pipe, what size did you use in the pictures...looks a little cleaner than mine, but mine did give a nice mellow sound.

3.5'' Flex Stainless exhaust flex, and used 3.5'' ubolt style clamps as well, flex fit well, and the exhaust piping is skookum enough to reall bite down on.
