: sterring shaft replacement ?
bearnc1 11-01-2004, 11:34 PM I have a 03 2500 Duramax, Allison. This has been one great truck. A month or so ago I had the sterring shaft lubicated at my Chevy dealer. I had noise in the front end while backing out of my garage and making a hard turn. The noise went away for awhile but came back after a month or so. I took it back today and they are going to replace the sterring shaft. I had a 99 GMC with this problem and a new shaft fixed it. It drove like something loose in the front end. Has GM not improved the sterring shaft in four years??? The new part is on order.

SWDmax 11-02-2004, 03:15 PM Wonder if this is what I am feeling in mine. I cant really hear anything to speak of, but can feel it in the wheel when turning (very slight). Is this the same symtoms as yours ? If so, Im sure not looking forward to removing all the goodies before I take it in.
patrick 11-02-2004, 04:10 PM no part change. Seen this all to many times. I wounder if one could tap a zerk fitting and grese it often.
bearnc1 11-02-2004, 06:31 PM This truck is not near as bad as the 99 GMC. In a turn you can feel like something is loose and heard a clunk. Mine does it the most when backing out of the garage and making a hard turn. Today I was going up a ramp slowly and could feel it in the sterring. The old GMC was like a lot of loose motion in the wheel. After replacement of the shaft it drove like it was new again. I only drove it a few more months before getting this Duramax. I got a frind that has a 03 Chevy 1500 and he is getting a new shaft also. I would have thought they would have taken care of this by now.

Ditto ... "China" sure comes up often on this forum ...oil, tailgate cables and steering shafts. I'm sure GM got some kind of steering shaft/tailgate cable pkg deal. http://www.dieselplace.com/forum/smileys/smiley5.gif
GMC2500HD 11-05-2004, 10:39 PM Well I took my truck in today, was told they had the part to fix it. They told me after I had been there for an hour that the repair would be more extensive than they thought and did not have the proper parts (shaft and accessory stuff needed). I told them that I took the day off and that did not seem to matter then they told me that I could bring it back in about a month or so. They did not even lube the shaft or anything, so I still have the clunk and I am not happy about it...http://www.dieselplace.com/forum/smileys/smiley7.gif

dmaxalliTech 11-07-2004, 10:49 PM if properly greased, the problem will go away for a loooonnnngggg time.
New shaft doesnt seem to be a huge improvement from what I have found
ShumDit 11-08-2004, 02:23 AM Whats all this new shaft talk? Thot the prob was w/the box (w/CB lable) input bearing ~ did I miss shumtin?
AndrewFessler 11-08-2004, 03:18 PM Took mine in and they put a new shaft in.
BlueDMax 11-08-2004, 03:40 PM I had my chinese tailgate cables replaced and I mentioned the non-smothness in the steering. They replaced the intermediate shaft. It helped quite a bit but not as good as new. I only have 22K on the truck.
