: noob with noob question
isaachaze1 07-27-2007, 06:49 PM hey all,
i have a 2002 camaro z28 (the last of it's kind haha) with an LS1 of course. i'm interested in replacing the ls1 with a duramax engine after seeing the somewhat insipid show "pimp my ride." anyway, i have no idea if this is feasible and i also have no idea how much a new duramax engine would cost. i would like to keep my kook's long-tubes and billy boat exhaust if such a swap is possible/feasible. i currently have 346 rwhp and about 350 ft/#s of torque (a solid 12 sec car on street tires) with the mods i've done. anyway, interested in the increased hp as well as being better for the environment with the duramax. also, i have no idea about the availability of bio-diesel fuel. any thoughts on any of this would be appreciated. thanks, isaac
jpoudrier 07-27-2007, 09:38 PM First anything is possible. The big issues are Resources, Experience, & Money. A D-Max weighs a lot more then your LS1. I have heard numbers like $15-20K for a D-Max. I think the twin turbo that Banks sells, I think is $25K. I think your first obstacle is going to be the frame and suspension.
Second turn off Pimp My Ride and watch Overhaulin. At least Chips designs are more practical. Who the hell wants a conveyor belt for your PSP in the trunk.
malibu795 07-27-2007, 09:43 PM ppe did the conversion... a fully dressed dmax.. is ~950 pounds.....
u can find a block and what not for about 3000-6000 depending on the condition fo the engine.
efi live will be you friend;)
isaachaze1 07-27-2007, 11:10 PM haha yea, i do watch over-haulin and not pimp my ride. chip foos is the man and i like the fact that they don't do stupid $hit with their cars (i.e., putting fish tanks in the back seat, and putting plasma screens in the back of the BACK seats. pimp my ride is a joke, but i was flipping by and saw arnold swarzenegger(sp) so stopped to check it out. the duramax engine they used was just plain sick and they put that car up against a lambo gallardo and dusted it. they put the duramax in a what i think was a 65 impala.
yea, that is a heavy engine and suspension would definately be an issue. i can tighten up the frame with subframe connectors (which i was planning on putting in anyway).
$15-20 sounds with the realm of reason. anything more than that, and i probably wouldn't do it. 900+ #s is a lot of weight too. whytf are they so heavy?

jpoudrier 07-27-2007, 11:59 PM Don't forget the beefed up tranny and rear end.
An old co-worker had an 02 Camaro SS. He added only intake and exhaust and dusted a roush mustang. Chevy made a sic car.
Course the new C6 is no ***** cat. Took a buddies for a ride. Doing 90 in third gear just doesn't seem right. :D
aka108 07-28-2007, 12:09 AM And beefed up brakes. Just buy the truck and keep the Camero as is.

x2 on that one!! Trucks are the way to go anyway, unless your just super board and have alot of $$ to blow...

in that case i could use some hand outs:p:
Tolliwacker 07-28-2007, 11:23 PM X2 for the hand outs..........if you were just gonna blow it on the camaro anyway.....
isaachaze1 07-30-2007, 05:22 PM thanks for the input everyone. i do have a D&D performance built tranny already, so that won't be a problem. buy a truck??? wtf?? i feel like i'm driving around sitting on a barstool! that ain't cool. no thanks, i'll stick with my 'maros. yea, the ss is the same as my car except that they put a borla exhaust and hood with intake. the hood is cool, but i like my billy boat exhaust better than the borla. i'm putting in a cam next. anyway, i'll keep my eye on the duramax engines and at some point will want to do the transplant (when they come down in weight/price. wtf are the trucks getting all the love?? i wouldn't even know how to drive one lol
Tolliwacker 07-30-2007, 08:23 PM But we drive what ya call a Sleeper, we see folks who think they can win all the time, and our 7000 lb trucks catch them sleeping.

I'm going 4l80e in my Trans Am when my current 4l60e blows...this is only my 3rd 4l60e and I'm tired of replacing them. This current one has actually lasted the longest now that the overheating problems are resolved.

i am going through PATC for my parts..... right now all it got it is survie behind my 305.... which shouldnt be to hard... i am swaping even t-56 for the 4l80 actually i get two of them minus electronics:eek:
i want to put a diesel in it.......
isaachaze1 08-04-2007, 01:51 AM yea, replacing the tranny is actually cheaper (at least it was for me) then having some guy rebuild the old one. and yea, i love gm, but the m6 trannys they put in f-bodies are crap. what happened to me is fairly common, i.e., bending the forks and getting stuck in 5th gear. yea, driving a car in 5th gear only is a lot of fun, especially at red lights. anyway, the d&d performance tranny is great and the flywheel is even better than the slp flywheel i had in it. i do regret that i didn't spend a little more and get their viper tranny. also, i have to put a 12bolt on because the gm rearends are also crap (sorry guys, but gm ain't perfect). well, maybe i will just get a truck. naw...
