: Running Red Dye Fuel
coyotekid 10-31-2004, 11:46 PM Aside from all the legal/political/ethical/monetary issues of running red dye, will it harm a Durmamax if used extensively?
It's my understanding that it's exactly the same fuel with red dye in it....
However, sometimes I see "high-sulfur" associated with red dye. I realize that it's not the sulfur that provides lubricity, rather the process of removing it. If red dye is indeed higher in sulfur content, this certainly won't cause any damage will it?
jholly 11-01-2004, 12:03 AM Man, don't do that. Instead of black smoke you will get red smoke. The DOT boys will be all over you.

When's the last time you saw a farm tractor bellowing out red smoke???
Not to mention that in some neck of the woods running red diesel is legal with farm plates on your vehicle.

salesrep 11-01-2004, 10:16 AM Won't hurt a thing to run red-dye. Unless caught.http://www.dieselplace.com/forum/smileys/smiley33.gif
killerbee 11-01-2004, 10:38 AM Is it less likely to be tampered with/diluted? Many folks seem to have problems with gas station diesel.
coyotekid 11-01-2004, 12:14 PM The reason I'm asking is because if I ever do have to use it, I'm wondering about harmful effects.
The nearest commercial fueling station is about 10 miles away from me, so if I ever get low on fuel, red dye is my only option until I can get to a commercial station.
Thanks!
Max Power 11-01-2004, 01:30 PM Here it is legal to run it in trucks with farm plates. I know several people who run it regularily and never have problems.

redneck45 11-02-2004, 08:09 AM Being a redneck I can assure you it will not hurt a thing!
Jumper357 11-02-2004, 11:23 AM Do a search for red dye it has been discussed here quite a bit, you'll find a GM memo stating it does not void warranty. It is illegal in most state's ... in AZ it is a $10,000 fine and the Highway Patrol/ADOT performs random roadside inspections. Many have been caught. Use at your own risk, no matter how many miles you drive a year or several years for that matter the savings almost does not equate to that large a fine.
Maxxis 11-02-2004, 12:18 PM I am in the petroleum business and can assure you that it will not hurt a thing.
There are several types of diesel fuel, 1 is lsd what you get at the pump which is low-sulfur diesel, 2 is HSD or farm diesel which stands for High-sulfur diesel depending on where you live some places you LSD Dyed as farm diesel. That is the same exact fuel that you get at the pumps but with at dye in it, because it is tax exempt. 3 is something new to the U. S. BIO-Diesel when this comes out in your area I strongly suggest using this it burns cleaner in the motor and in return there will be less problems. This fuel is so clean you will have a lot less problems out of a clogged fuel filter. But, to answer your question NO you will not have a problem running Farm Diesel just avoid DOT.
Majuba Max 11-02-2004, 06:18 PM we run colored fuel all the time some taxes are exempt it is legal here on farm trucks its only a color in the same fuel
killerbee 11-02-2004, 06:30 PM OK. It's time to get smart here. How do I find out about putting a tank in my yard that I can have filled with ORD? How would it pump?
etc etc.
coyotekid 11-02-2004, 07:54 PM Well, you first have to justify its use.
In my case, I happen to have an extremely thirsty diesel powered lawnmower. This thing is likely to burn 20-30 gallons a week year round. http://www.dieselplace.com/forum/smileys/smiley2.gif
A good old gravity feed tank should keep it satiated, however.
salesrep 11-02-2004, 07:57 PM Call at local fuel jobber he will be more than happy to discuss with you the alternatives and pricing to putting a tank on your property.
Majuba Max 11-03-2004, 12:22 PM just remember the color stays in your system a long time so its not a one time thing and it is not gone from your tank and lines so it does not go away when you quit using it it hangs arond for quite awhile after so if it is not legale in youer state you better think about that
BlueCrew 04 D/A SB GMC 11-03-2004, 01:02 PM What if you accidently grab the wrong side at the pump and put in a little off road fuel, then notice and stop, they can't fine you right http://www.dieselplace.com/forum/smileys/smiley2.gif There are lawyers every where http://www.dieselplace.com/forum/smileys/hihi.gif

Yeah, we can.......http://www.dieselplace.com/forum/smileys/smiley4.gif
As far as residue being left in the system, I believe that was a lot worse in the past (esp with the old dyed gasoline) than it is now. I don't believe that it "stains" the engine components as it did in the past.
From everything that I know about it, it should not hurt your vehicle.
In fact, I believe that in Florida the IRS, for a limited amount of time, authorized the sale of dyed fuel for on-road use because of the fuel shortage they experienced down there during all the hurricanes
FYI, If you do put some into your truck either because of an emergency or by accident be sure and always run it as low as your possibly can to burn out as much of the dyed fuel as possible, otherwise you just keep diluting it when adding new fuel. And they machines used to pick up the dye are very sensitive.
Around here, a first time offense with a single pickup truck will usually net you about a $2,000 fine. IMO, that is a lot of fuel you would have to burn to recover any $$ savings. Plus the added trouble and expense you have to go to get the fuel (unless you have a bulk tank anyways).

dieselfumes57 11-03-2004, 04:24 PM Been running red for over 2 years since new and never a word said or a problem @ 97k.
BuckeyeQuicky 11-03-2004, 07:54 PM Yes you can use it, and it will not harm your engine, but be aware if you don't have a farm plate on and you are caught using the vehicle with off road fuel in it (RED DYE), the fine can be huge, not only do you get hit with state fines, you will also get nailed by the Feds for using untaxed fuel, if you do have exempt plates on and your running the red fuel, you had better be using the said vehicle on farm business, like hauling supply's or hauling cattle to market, if you were to say, use your truck to pull an RV, and your pulled over in another state and they dip your tank and get traces of dye, they can nail you, it takes up to 10 or more tank fulls of regular diesel fuel run through your system to flush out all traces of the dye and more then that if your running and extra filter setup, some states are really getting vigilant about busting people using off road fuel with many joining every day, they like to set up to check diesel P/U trucks at Hwy rest areas, rodeos and cattle auctions, I would almost bet money that if you brag or mention the fact on here, or any of the other diesel web sites, that your using off road fuel to save money, they would do some investigation to get your name and address and nail you, remember you can do a lot of things in this country and get away with it, murder, robbery & rape, but one thing you wont get away with is, trying to beat the government out of their taxes, no matter how small the amount.
BlueCrew 04 D/A SB GMC 11-04-2004, 12:48 AM It's not worth it to me to save about $600-$700 a year and risk a $10,000 fine around here
