I use to live in Mi ( about 8 years agos) and would camp at Silver Lake sand dunes. At the time I drove a 1989 K5 Blazer and never had a problem driving on the dune. I will be going back th Mi. to visit family in August and would like to go back.
How do these trucks do on the sand. Are they to heavy? Too long? I have H2 wheels and tires, any suggestions on air pressure. Can I go over the hills? or will I get high centered easily?
Any help, comments or suggestions appreciated. Thanks

I am interested in this info, too. I will be at Silver Lake between August 3rd and the 12th (an annual trip for me). This is the first time I will be taking the truck on the dunes. I have been going there for 25 years with a dune buggy, and I don't plan on launching my precious dmax over test hill. Just cruise, be careful, don't do anything stupid that you'll regret. I have a neighbor that took his brand new Avalanche over the hill and buried it down to the frame.

I think I will run 20lbs all around on my H2's with 285 BFG's.

Your truck will do good up there. I went with my 265 BFG's on stock wheels and it did really good. You should do better than mine did cus you have bigger tires. I had a '96 Z-71 on 35's and it floated on the sand better but this truck makes up for it with power. NODMAX is right on with the tire pressure.

BTW, you need some pics in your garage

x3 go down to 15-20 all around and you will be fine. These trucks do like axle hop in the sand though. I put on Cognito traction bars and it really helps. I can actually run 2wd in alot of places in the sand now while aired down. Good luck and have fun

Thanks for the help. I am unsure of when exactly I will be there but sometime betwween Aug. 13 and 20th. Has anyone take their truck over the hills. I think the truck is too long and will high center but still wanna try.

Not to steal the tread but what town or zip code would the dunes be in?? I've seen some awsome pictures and would like to mapquest the area. Maybe plan a trip one day. Thx

The dunes are in Mears, MI. I go over the big hills with my crew cab long box, no problems. You just have to pick and choose where you go, and there are plenty of choices. I just tried to stay away from the parts of the hills that were really peaked.

Headed for Silver Lake tonight. Got me some brand new BFG's this week. I've always been able to go pretty much anywhere out there. Just air way down like others have said.

The sand can change alot depending on the weather. If its been dry and windy the sand will be real loose. And make it harder to get around and the hills will have peaks that make it easy to get hung up on. If they get some good rain the sand can firm up and make things lot easier.

I'll give an update on Monday to tell how it went.

I don't know the zipcode, but it is in Mears, MI. Definately get over there, you won't regret it.

Got back from Silver Lake last night. Man I love that place. Sure was glad I went and got the new BFG's before I went. Aired down to 15 rear 20 front and she did just fine. Didn't beat on her to much it was mostly there to haul the family and all of the gear out to the beach. I brought the quad for playing.

Did ride in my buddies almost new LBZ. He has 305 BFG AT's. It went everywhere. All out up every hill and through every water hole.

Your friends truck is stock hieght or lifted? Did he high center at all on the big hills?

It is a crew cab short box. With green keys and 2" blocks in the back. He was doing some of the big hills in 2 wheel drive, but he was getting a real good run at them.

You can very easily get hung up if it is to peaked at the top. Just make sure that you don't stop until you get your nose starting to point downhill. And there is usually always somone real close willing to give you a quick tug to get you going if you need.

On another note if you are starting to get stuck and have all of your windows down, don't mash the gas as it will instantly fill your entire truck with a layer of sand. Don't ask me how I know this!!

Silver Lake is fun, but be careful guys, there has been alot of trucks and Jeeps rolling this year.

Can't wait to tear it up in my truck, once I get some real tires!
