Need your help on this one. My truck has developed a loud screaching nois that happens every once in a while when I am driving down the road. Also when I engage the 4x4 it sounds like a bucket of bolts being tossed around, and it pops into 4wd really hard, when I switch out of 4wd it does not disengage even though the lite say 2wd. I put it up on blocks last night and got under it, when I tried to engage 4wd there was a loud clattering noise coming from the front driveline. The drive line was spinning coming out of the transfer case but the wheels were not moving, Also where the drive line enters the front axle is where the clattering noise was coming from. I drained and refilled the front differential and the oil looked okay, no metal shavings. What the heck is wrong with my truck, I could hardly sleep last night and am thing major repair....

If you spin the front wheels by hand when it is on the blocks does it turn your drive shaft? You might have stripped the axle shaft splines. Or your front actuator on your diff isn't engaging all the way, causing a chatter.

Check your front wheel bearings for play . I have heard bearings screech when the rollers temporarily stop turning .

Does the truck need to be in 4x4 when I try spinning the tires? How do I keep it in 4wd without having the truck on? I have a push button 4wd truck. I like the idea of the actuator not engaging, since when I was driving around and took it out of 4wd the lite said 2wd but i could tell it was still in 4wd, so it might not be engaging or disengaging. I doubt I stripped the splines, I don't drive the truck hard in 4wd, I only use it when I have too i.e. (snow and ice)

I pushed/pulled the front wheels when up on blocks there was very minimal play if any on the passenger wheel, the drivers side had about 1/8" movement.

I would try it both in and out of 4 wheel drive. Just do it with the key on so you can have power to the actuator.
