I would like to install better speakers in the front and rear door of my GMC 04. How do you get the door panels off? I don't want to brake the panels. Edited by: vintagehifi

Very easy. There are, I beleive 2 screws in the front and 2 in the
rear. Pry up the power controls and diconnect the main harness
and the front triangle panel pops off too. The panel now should
be able to lift up. If not them something is not removed.
It is a very easy process. Good luck.

Also remove the door lock cover. It just snaps into place too.

Thanks Ben. http://dieselplace.com/forum/smileys/smiley1.gif I suppose that there is GM plugs on the speakers and they will have to be modified along with checking the speaker phase. I have 2 6 1/2" for the front and 4" X 6" for the rear. Thats what I understand is the right size for the truck.http://dieselplace.com/forum/smileys/Rock%20On.gif

I ran completely new wires since I put a new unit in along with
amps. I no longer have Con-Star but never did in the first place.

BE CAREFUL!

I tryed to pry off the switch panel on my 03 and it has a screw in it. The directions are different for the 01-02 and 03-04. I have not taken my panel out yet but I would be very careful when prying stuff off.

Just wanted to give you a heads up.

You can get adapters to connect aftermarket speakers to your wiring harness at any big electronics store like Best But or Circuit City. The adapters are about $12/pair. You may need speaker mounting adapters in the front also. I got them from Crutchfield for about $20. These adaters snap into place like the factory setup, and combined with the wire adapters make installlation and removal of aftermarket speakers a snap. Word of advice, make sure you secure the "new" wires to prevent getting caught in widow drive mechanism! These items aren't rewuired but make the whole process less painful. Edited by: 32ports

I was just outside trying to get the panel off my 05, and like Lonewolf I discovered that it does not just pop off. The new door panels do not come off the same as the old. If anyone has taken off a new one please let me know how.

From Helms:

1. Remove the door handle bezel.

2. Remove door trim panel upper extension (triangle piece)

3. Using a suitable flat-bladed tool, gently pry the manual lock lever from the door trim panel

4. Remove the trim panel screws (one inside door lock lever, one in front of the armrest)

5. Carefully slide the trim panel up in order to release the retainers from the door

6. Disconnect the electrical connectors

Works great.

Well I got the speakers installed over the weekend and I found out the you CAN'T pry up the switch panel (2004 mod). It does have a screw in it. I just removed the plastic cap and screw (rear of the front door) the the plastic push plug ( front edge of the front door), snap out the top trangle, lock retainer bolt and the door handle trim. Lifted the door panel up and hinged the top out, unpluged the switch panel and side lamp socket. I didn't use any adapters for the speakers just drilled 4 small holes used sheet metal screws, 1/4 foam and installed the speakers. The rear I removed 2 screws and pulled the door panel straight out from the "U" shaped snaps.Edited by: vintagehifi
