: blown diodes???

I have done a couple of the lighting mods posted here (backup lights
& high/low headlites on) and have used a 1 way diode (N4001)
on each install. However, I have seem to have a problem with
blown diodes.

Everything else is working (no blown fuses, etc), but my headlights are
back to factory (i.e.: when I turn on the high beams, only the
high pair of lights work).

Also, I ran a hot wire on a switch back to my aux back up lights &
installed a 1 way diode (N4001) so that when I switched them on from
the cab, the facory back up light would not be on. (but both sets
of lights would still work when I put the truck in reverse).
After about two weeks, evidently the diode is blown here also, because
when I hit the switch, both the aux lite & the factory BU lights
are powered.

Is anyone else having this problem? Does anyone have any
suggestions for a more "robust" / stronger one way diode that I can
use? I really like the mods, I just want them to work correctly.

Thanx for the help

i think that a n4004 diode might be stronger. (i think)?

The diode is not heavy enough. You need to use see how man amps it draws and get the appropriate size diode. Either that or use relays and use the diodes on the activating side of the relay.

OK, that's what I thought!

Looks like it's off to the electronics store (I need to find something
besides Rat shack. I think I got the biggest they had in our
little local store.

Max, are you having problems with your headlite mod? I just thot it was weird that I was the only one w/this issue.

Anyhoo, thanx for the help Max & Gearhead!

No because I use the diodes before the relay. There is very little draw and the diodes are well within specs.

Thats what I do ^ use relays with diaodes on em so not much juice is actually flowing through em.
