: Perma-Cool & Cat
Frank Blum 10-28-2004, 11:20 PM I have had good luck with the Racor 660 engine mounted filters that I have been installing. I wanted to put something together a little cheaper with a name that everyone recognizes. I decided on the Perma-Cool head and Cat filter. The head showed today. I picked up a Cat filter. It didn't take long to see that the Perma-Cool element and the Cat are not exactly the same. The Perma-Cool has a seal below the threads to keep from bypassing fuel past the threads. The Cat looks like it was made to use an "O" ring above the threads. The center fitting in the Perma-Cool head is straight cut without a seal. It is just my opinion that both places should have "O" rings. I bought the proper rings and it looks like it will work fine. I have posted some photos for those with this combination. Later! Frank

jholly 10-28-2004, 11:37 PM What about a Baldwin BF7633 instead of that Cat? I have a Wix filter head the looks a lot like that Perma-Cool. The Baldwin has a rubber ring internally below the threads the seems to seal fine on the straight part below the threads on the head. Not sure if there is much difference between the Cat and the Baldwin. Cat has a tech article saying the Baldwin is no good and Baldwin has a tech article saying it's better than the Cat.

Frank Blum 10-28-2004, 11:46 PM I think the "O" rings will take care of my concerns. I just posted the information for those using the same set up. The Racors have a built in "O" ring also. Later! Frank http://www.dieselplace.com/forum/smileys/smiley2.gif
gearhead 10-29-2004, 12:12 AM how much did the setup cost?
Frank Blum 10-29-2004, 12:22 AM $63. Later! Frank
InTentsDmax 10-29-2004, 06:21 AM This is the set-up I've used for 20,000 miles, but I use a Baldwin 7633 because the Cat filter I originally intended to use would not thread onto the Permacool head. (2 heads & 3 cat filters later I switched to the Baldwin). Works great with only one instance of air (OEM filter related). After 7,500 miles I just had to cut open the Baldwin and was amazed/shocked at the amount of crap that the OEM allows to pass thru.I think I'll try the gasket on the head. I just wished I had put the second filter on when I drove the truck off the lot. Thanks again Frank for the bracket and great advice !!
Lonewolf867 10-29-2004, 09:02 AM Frank,
What is the part number for the permacool? Also where can they be gotten from? I talked to several shops around here and they all play dumb when it comes to filters.
I have been considering this for some time now.

Frank, This is exactly what I noticed when I was trying out the Cat filter on my Mega base. I also installed the o-ring to address the issue of fuel seeking the point of least resistance and channeling past the threads. I was a little concerned about torqueing problems and o-ring seating so I have since switched back to the Baldwin element as it is better suited for the Mega base. I have results from both filters in Bill Plocks spreadsheet.
dirty old man 10-29-2004, 10:49 AM There's a difference in that Perma-Cool head and the one that came with my Nicktane setup.
Yours has a stepped center pipe and an obvious place for an "O" ring. Mine has a straight center pipe with the same threads screwing into the head that the filter screws onto at the other end of the pipe, although the filter end does have the turned down and chamfered end to start the filter onto the pipe.
A previous thread mentioned adding an "O" ring, and the day I installed the Nicktane kit I went to NAPA to get an "O" ring and they were out of stock. Looked it all over and realized that I could possibly get a small internal bypass around the the filter media, but an air leak was unlikely, so I went ahead and installed sans "O" ring. Been on for awhile now, maybe 2-3k, we'll see what it looks like when I change it and I cut it open. Edited by: dirty old man
Frank Blum 10-29-2004, 02:29 PM I bought the filter from SummitRacing.com. It was $35.88 plus $8.95 handling instead of a shipping charge. Later! Frank

Use Microsoft word to create the hyperlink from one or two words, assign the long address to the short word, then cut it and paste into this box.
On edit; I guess that didn't work. The Forum software changes it I guess so they or you can see where you are going.. So no trick links... Edited by: arguy

These Black electric fuel pumps from Holley feature an improved design for street and strip applications, a new lower housing casting for enhanced fuel flow, and a tumble-polished billet look with the distinctive black logo. These pumps have a 140 gph flow rate, only draw 4 amps, and have a maximum pressure of 14 psi with an externally accessible pressure relief valve. They weigh only 3 lbs., and include a mounting bracket. These pumps are compatible with alcohol or methanol fuels.

jholly 10-30-2004, 01:26 AM The Holley is not speced for diesel, but maybe it will work. Pressure seems high. The Carter is speced for diesel and runs 6 psi.

Frank Blum 11-17-2004, 06:44 PM I ran the Perma-Cool head with the Cat filter for almost two weeks. I had a no start almost every day. This setup mounted in the second alternator position, on my truck, added too much to the net positive suction head. (too much flow restriction) It would probably work fine down on the frame. It is for sale. PM me if interested. Later! Frank
chipper 11-17-2004, 09:43 PM I have been running the Perma- Cool/Cat setup for over 11,000 miles with ZERO no start problems. According to my vacum guage the Cat 750 filter does not add any additional suction pressure to the pump. The suction with just the OEM is 2.5" & with the Cat added, still 2.5". I did bevel out the inside shoulder on the barb hose fittings before I used them, may have helped stop some turbulance in the fuel flow.
Frank Blum 11-17-2004, 11:57 PM It just did not work on my truck. You cannot add another major component on the inlet side without adding to the suction head. (vacuum) I think sealing the threads with "O" rings on the internal discharge nipple might have caused the problem. I put the Racor back on and all is well. Later! Frank http://www.dieselplace.com/forum/smileys/smiley4.gif
Mitchagain 11-18-2004, 01:13 PM Frank, you mean all you did was to remove the CAT and screw on the Racor? Color me puzzled.
