I figured based on preliminary findings #6 was fubared but turns out #2 slug was the killer. Guess 70K of overfueling finally took its toll. Every slug had severe erosion and cracks but only #2 managed to completely split.

I don't have the right bank pulled yet and I have to get the rods out to see how short they are. So far they look good. Valvetrain wear looks ok.

Sucks to be a split piston club member but maybe we will have a solution soon.

Flower Power Brandon! We'll start calling you "Flower Child".

Sorry to see it, man. But dont throw those pistons away...I'd bet the Mahle and Ross engineers would be interested in examining them.

I'm curious to know exactly how much h.p. was sent through those for how many miles (or sled pulls) untill they failed...

I started modding my truck with a beta Juice at 5K miles. It lived most of its life at 500 plus horsepower. Countless 600 and 700 plus horsepower runs. Busted 800 a few times.

It ingested a veritable metric assload of nitrous doing it. The countless 2,000 degree 1/4 mile runs gave those pistons that nice flower look. ;)

Super Glue might be a stretch, but JB Weld will deffinitly get you back on the road. Probably wanna let it cure for the full 24 hours. :D

It's amazing it took on that much abuse and continued to run like a raped ape for so long, Brandon. The "fire forming" of the bowl lips is in-freaking-credible!!

Everybody says that nitrous engines will die quicker. I don't know that I buy that given what we see here. Maybe there is something to this whole nitrogen buffering thing.... :D

wondering why most of the "flowers" seem to favor the upper-left side of the piston. Like at about 10-10:30 they are most severely damaged and the damage, for the most part, appears to fade off the closer you get to the 4 o'clock postion on the piston. Just wondering why that might be? The injectors have seven holes, right??

No need wasting time machining the lip off the replacement pistons, they'll just erode away in a couple passes anyway :D

It's amazing that your pistons eroded as much as they did before the piston cracked and others have virtually unscathed pistons and they are cracking........

Sorry to see it, but from the sounds of it the motor served you well. Good luck on the rebuild.

sorry to hear that Brandon...but those are very interesting pics.

I think its cool to see the differences in (appearent) spray patterns of the injectors, or at least the differences in errosion patterns of the bowls. Have you ever replaced injectors in this engine? What were your balance rates?

this pictures tell a good story about a lot of things IMHO and examining these closely I think is about as close as we will get to having a camera inside the cylinder of a running engine.....

Injectors were only ever replaced once, and it was elective. I went to forty overs for more fuel. I put over 30K on it with the larger injectors.

Balance rates were always good except on #8 which would go to the high end of the range from time to time.

Hi Brandon,
How long have you had the dual CP3 setup?

dmaxalliTech

Pretty common on motors with EDM'd injectors, but first I've seen it that consistant all the way around..

I ran the dual fuelers for about three months. They definitely pushed it over the edge.

Looking at the flower pattern got me to thinking back to ways people were coming up with to cut the new pistons to lower compression and maybe not let them crack up. If the pistons do this on there own would it be wise to cut them in this pattern when new? The petals of the flower seem to be where the high heat and stress are being generated.

Impesive pics non-the less.

Great pics,

Thanks for taking the time to shoot and post. I thinks it fasinating to actually see (up close and clear) how the internals fair under fire. Sort of the "inside" story on creating that thick black smoke.

Thanks again

These weren't EDM's. I only ever had one set done EDM and never put them in an engine. I let others discover the error of the EDM rework way on the Dmax injectors.

Possibly due to the orientation of the intake valves. If I'm not mistaken on the drivers bank the intake valves would be at 2 o'clock and 4 o'clock?

Definitely some merit to that theory but I can't fathom the why part. They are not at 2 and 4 o'clock but they do match up on the erosion pattern more than the exhaust valves. I'd almost expect the erosion on the exhaust valve side instead....

Your pictures are of opposite banks,on the drivers bank the intake valves line up with where the least erosion is. Possibly due to the cooler air coming in at that point.

Whoops, I looked at the wrong photo like a dummy. But it does put the erosion on the exhaust valve side when you look at the right photo so we agree! I figured with it being heavily overfueled and still having that charge exhausted is causing the accelerated wear on the piston edge.

Just to clarify, I understand that these are NOT EDM injectors. I was only making the comment on what I've seen on other engines. :)

I've yet to see an EDM'd injector that I felt was better then the extruded versions

Thanks for the pics BM! A pic speaks a thousand words and those are very impressive to say the least. I'd guess that removing the bowl lip on the piston is not a bad idea for those running stock pistons in their motors.

TommJr
07-24-2007, 07:54 PM
Don't shoot me.

Is this a stock motor?

If so, how many miles before she popped?

And also, how many miles did you run her before the dual fuelers?

I have 120,000 miles on my truck and am only running 500 H.P., how long before mine blows apart? Just remember, I don't plan on pushing it any farther.:D

Not stock----- special flowering pistons
70000 miles.... ran the Heck out of it from every stop light ):h
Dual fuelers for three months...........probably a few thousand miles

That about sums it up. The engine had stock internals except for the forty over injectors. Everything else was RPO code PFFFS. (Pretty ****ing Far From Stock) ;)
