I recently started hearing a "whining" noise from the engine compartment, and I can't identify where it is coming from. Any help would be appreciated.

When i start the truck, it is not evident, but when i crank the steering wheel, it starts in, loud. From then on, I can hear it constantly while i'm driving.

The pitch of the whine correlates with RPM (i.e. higher RPM - higher pitched noise) and the volume correlates to use of steering and brakes (i.e. louder when i'm turning or braking).

I stuck my head under the hood to try to identify where its coming from, but the engine noise drowns out the sound (i can hear it better from the driver's seat).

Somebody suggested that it might have to do with my vacuum pump. Can anybody help me identify my issue?

p.s. i'm a bit of a maintenance novice. thanks for you understanding:)

Huh! Whining heard only in the passenger compartment. I get that too, but I love her anyway.:Handshake

Have you checked the power steering resevoir fluid level ?
With the engine running try resting a section of
broome handle against the power steering pump housing and rest the other end against your ear and have someone help
turn the steering and listen for the noise to change. Acts like a doctor's
stethescope. This will help locate the problem.

Another good way to help find the sound is with a piece of garden hose (only a few feet). Hold one end to your ear, and move the other end around the engine, it works just like a stethoscope.

Welcome to the 'Place, Makingyour.........

Definitely sounds like your p\s pump is whining because the reservoir is dry - if not, the pump is shot - check it out, as suggested

Tracked the noise to the power steering pump using the broomstick method, and sure enough, power steering fluid was down. Filled 'er up, and she sounds fine!

Thanks for the help...glad it was that simple!
