: Straight pipe whistle/noise?
confuzed_guy 07-19-2007, 12:36 AM Just reworked my exhaust and pulled the muffler altogether and the whistle from the turbo is incredible! As much as I like it, I really don't want to capture the attention of the police ticket writers in town so I keep it under 2000 rpm in town when I think there is a chance they might be lurking.
Has anyone here actually gotten a ticket for illegally modified exhaust to a diesel? People tell me not to worry that is isn't bad unless I stand on it but.... Guess I just don't like throwing money away on traffic tickets
I know, don't do the crime if you can't do the time... But I love the whistle so!!!!!!
Matt C 07-19-2007, 12:40 AM I've never gotten a ticket with either of mine, but I live in a small town in Minnesota, not New York.

I live in small town NY, so maybe there's hope for me!!!! I dislike "NY City" and wouldn't go there unless absolutely necessary (meaning lot's-o-money). If course, I wouldn't even try to take my rig there!
Dave12 07-19-2007, 12:49 AM Have you removed your "turbo silencer"? That'll help it whistle even more.

I belive your talking about the piece of plasic in the intake tube. If so 94's dont have them. Think they started that in 1997 when they switched to the round filter.

Yep that's what I'm talking about. I wasn't aware that all year didn't have them. Now I know. :)

LOL, I thought he was talking particulate filter/soot trap

I avoid the city, is straight pipe an option there? I used SS Diesel Supplies downpipe and just ran about 4' of 3" then 6' of 4" straight out the back! Cost was about $120 for pipe, clamps and universal hangers. LOL, I'm gonna put my OEM downpipe on eBay and see if anyone actually buys it!
Sasquach 07-19-2007, 01:19 AM I just had my 07 classic exaust done wow what a difference. Clyde at Redline diesel did a dual magnaflow w/tips. turbo whistle is loud but not extreemly loud. what about this plastic piece in the intake?
Brooklyn tow 07-19-2007, 01:20 AM no good here....Truck enforcment everywhere.......need a kitty( I guess it could be empty)......definatley need the muffler....also I like a quiet exhaust.......I know I'm asking alot.

I hear ya, I actually like the quiet exhaust as well. Guess I gotta shop for some mufflers that do the job without killing the whistle.
Brooklyn tow 07-19-2007, 01:25 AM Maybe I could find some stuff on e bay and piece it together?
Louis
screaminxl 07-19-2007, 01:26 AM Check Out Heath Diesel.......
Brooklyn tow 07-19-2007, 01:30 AM Yea I checked all the vendors.......Just short on sctratch......Those exhausts are as pricey as they are sweet.......you know my coin is low.

98z71keith 07-19-2007, 01:12 PM Turbo silencer hey? I am very interested in removing mine. Is there anything I should know before doing so? For example...where it is, what it looks like, what needs to be done to remove it? Sorry if these are dumb questions, but I'm relatively new to diesels! The reason I want to remove it, like it was said earlier that it increases the whistle, ya that would be sweet!
Dave12 07-19-2007, 02:48 PM Keith,
The poor mans way to do it is as follows.....
Remove the silencer. Cut the rounded end off about 1.5-2" back. Stuff the end in the hole in the intake where the silencer used to be and secure with a hose clamp. I won't take credit for this. It was another member on the site who posted this idea a while back, I just can't remember who.
Lots of other guys have used frost plugs etc. The nice thing about using the end of the plastic tube is if it were to ever get sucked into the turbo, the plastic is going to do A LOT less damage then a metal frost plug.
I'm going to be going out to do some work on my truck shortly. I'll snap a quick pic.
Dave
98z71keith 07-19-2007, 04:23 PM A pic would be great, thanks!
Dave12 07-19-2007, 04:27 PM Let me know if you have any other questions.
Dave
98z71keith 07-19-2007, 06:15 PM AHHHH, it all makes sense now! thanks much for the pic. Does removing the silencer have any potentially neg. effect?
03LB7HP 07-19-2007, 06:27 PM Make sure you check the oil in the muffler bearing! :wtf: :wtf1:
Diesel Tuna 07-19-2007, 06:44 PM I will love to have your problem, I have the SS exhaust and I still do not hear the turbo >......<

Nope. No worries
Dave
ghitch75 07-19-2007, 07:18 PM with a big cone filter and a straight pipe mine sounds like a semi!!
confuzed_guy 07-19-2007, 07:43 PM Hey, I could use one of them turbo silencers... What years are they on? Are they only with the round filters cause I have only the flat one.
I have an evil scientist plan and could really use one. Again, I have the flat type filter. IF anyone has the flat type filter "turbo silencer" intake, I'll trade ya for my non-"turbo silencer" intake :D
Dave12 07-19-2007, 08:02 PM Why do you want to silence your turbo? Everyone tries to get more turbo noise.
I think the sliencer set up is only with the 97+ round filters. The older style flat filters have a different elbow.
You can have mine but the end has been cut off. :)

You have an extra? If so, I'd really like to have it!
Dave12 07-19-2007, 08:13 PM Mine has the end cut off it to plug the hole in the intake elbow where it used to be. It's pretty much usless now but for some reason I kept it.

Oh, okay ;) Well, I PM'd ya the reason for wanting it anyways, lol... Just need on for "experimental" purposes. :D
If anyone else has one that is usable, please let me know as I would be interested to buy it if the price isn't too high
ole671 07-19-2007, 10:51 PM I have used 2 1 on each truck . 3in flow master 40 with straight pipes and no tickets great sound great turbo sound espicially with a oversized crossover pipe
bowtiedude69 07-20-2007, 03:49 AM I have a 3" down pipe, 3" pipe to where the muffler should be, and a 3 1/2" tailpipe. It is a the Banks system sans- muffler I don't find it noisy. Turbo whines man I love it.
