: Air filter again
CADMAX 10-27-2004, 09:16 PM Well, I have been meaning to change my K&N air filter since Spicer had the study done but could never find one in stock anywhere.
My indicator hasn't sucked in but while having my oil changed today I asked if they stocked air filters for my truck. Yes they did so I bought one. When I got home I took my airbox off and guess what.
My K&N was DIRTY. My intake tube had dust in it, not bad but any is too much. I did everything right as far as the install with the gasket they provide. I held the filter up in front of a light and you could see thru it good even though it looked like it should have been clogged.
I wish I would have done this sooner.
One question though. Does anyone know who makes the Penzoil air filter and are they any good? OK two questions. They seem to be pretty good quality and have alot of pleats.
Also, I did a point A to point B run, starting from a dead stop, towing with the K&N and the Penzoil. There was absolutely no performance gain with the K&N.
dmaxalliTech 10-27-2004, 09:37 PM MOST aftermarket air filters will fit the box, but are not designed for the d-max specifically. The correct filter(s) will have some type of reinforcment to maintain its shape under the suction of the turbo.
In this case, I'd stick with OEM paper filter for the job

Bill Gisse 10-28-2004, 07:44 AM The Baldwin air filter is a good choice when you can't find a Delco filter.
Bronco 10-28-2004, 11:29 AM Most aftermarket filters will have quite a few pleats. Close to 75. However the AcDelco designed specifically for the Dmax will have 150 pleats and the reinforcments Eric mentioned. The Acdelco was noticably heavier then the Purolator I bought from Advanced Auto. ( listed part for Dmax)
BTW I have never had a dirty tube since I removed my K&N.
1BADDMAX 10-28-2004, 01:02 PM The Purolator I used collapsed. Stay away... far away! I'm back to an ACDelco paper filter now. I may put the amsoil back in at a later time, but after looking at the air filter results, I think I'll stick to paper.
diesel66 10-28-2004, 06:34 PM I've had a K&N in my Duramx for 30,000 miles. I washed it out at 25,000 and there wasn't any dirt in the intake tube. I must be doing something wrong, according to others mentioned above.
rick777 10-28-2004, 06:51 PM i just installed my afe stage 2 pro gaurd 7. and WOW it sounds like a semi truck! its the coolest thing i have donehttp://www.dieselplace.com/forum/smileys/hihi.gif http://www.dieselplace.com/forum/smileys/smiley32.gif
RipVanWinkle 10-28-2004, 09:15 PM I just bought my "new" 01 dmax and when I had the oil changed the tech told me he "vacuumed out a ton of acorns" from my filter box. Seems that a rodent had crawled up there while the vehicle sat in a barn on a farm in Indiana. This truck only has 15000 miles on it, so it has obviously sat around for a while. I asked the guy if he thought the air filter needed to be changed and he said yes, although he didn't try to sell me a new one. I bought a Fram filter that has a bunch of pleats (I didn't count them like others have...http://www.dieselplace.com/forum/smileys/smiley36.gif) but I have to say, I noticed an IMMEDIATE improvement in power. Holy smokes, the turbo is whining like crazy and the accelleration is unbelieveable.
I bought this truck the way it was and I plan on improving it over time. Just changing the air filter made an enormous difference.
I'm a newbie at diesels, so I'll ask the question: What is supposed to be so great about K&N filters? I've heard about them before but know nothing.
Thanks,
Rip
dmaxalliTech 10-28-2004, 09:31 PM all you ever wanted to know about air filters.. (http://dieselplace.com/forum/forum_posts.asp?TID=10642&KW=air+filter+study)
CADMAX 10-28-2004, 11:36 PM Thanks for the replies and thanks to dmaxalliTech for posting that link. I tried to get to it but it wouldn't load.
We have an AC warehouse here in town but they don't stock the filters for the Duramaxhttp://www.dieselplace.com/forum/smileys/hihi.gif. I will get them to order me some, they are cheaper than the dealer.
I just bought the Penzoil on a whim. Glad I did.
I am very disapointed in the K&N and their claims. My turbo was no louder, acceleration is the same and I had dust in my intake tube.
It is a shame that companies can make false claims like they do. I know there is a certain degree of b.s. with any business but their's is B.S.. If I did that I would be out of business.
Anyway, again thanks guys.
CRUSHER 10-29-2004, 05:15 AM As I've always said, ya just can't beat paper filters for all around use. I now use Fleetguard air filters (part # AF25848) Made in the USA and I got'em for $10.00 each (bought a case of three filters) I orderd them through a local heavy duty truck repair/parts shop. They are well built and reinforced and have (if I counted right) 98 pleats. I promise that you can't see through this filter and I don't think dust can get through either.--------------------later---Philhttp://www.dieselplace.com/forum/smileys/smiley2.gif
Scotty Seelen 10-29-2004, 11:01 AM I just cleaned my filter on my K&N intake, and the tube was clean. This is with 28K miles on it. Of course, I don't drive down gravel roads....
gearhead 10-29-2004, 11:16 AM I have run K&N filters on every thing from my bikes to the truck with good luck to date
jesshd 10-30-2004, 08:06 PM I have the K&N FIPK on my truck. Cone filter and cold air box. Never any dust in the intake tube. Chances are good the injectors will crap out before the air filter creates any issues.

CADMAX 10-31-2004, 09:51 AM I ran K&N on my previous 99 GMC with no problems. I was suprised about the K&N on my Dmax. I drive the Dmax in the same conditions that I did my old truck.
It is my work truck as well as my daily driver. I go anywhere from paper mills to mud holes in it. Like I said the dust wasn't caked up but there was residue in the tube.
For what I put my truck through I have to keep it maintained and I don't think the K&N does what it claims in my situation. The fact that my filter indicator hasn't moved since I installed the K&N should say something.
If I was on the highway all the time I don't think it would be a problem. I understand that not everyone uses their trucks off road alot and even if they do conditions vary.
Didn't really mean to stir the pot again, I may should have been a little clearer.
Thanks for the feedback though.
