, the GMC Duramax had 69% fewer problems than the Chevy Duramax.

Interesting graphs, but the stupid link button dosent work.....

GM would probaly quit making GMC's but there are to many diehard GMC owners that believe the GMC is better than the Chev. Have had both and I don't see any diffrences othe than a few cosmetic differences. My dad was forman and later superintendent of the Chev/GMC pick up truck line at Yellow Truck and Coach in Pontiac, Mich. when that was the only place they were built. In 1945 I worked on that line when they retooled from making military trucks to making civvy stuff again . Was under age and quit in late 45 and went into the service in 46 at age 17. I don't remember any majow differences in the trucks then either.

Its true....there is no difference other than cosmetic and some optoins that are not available from one side (chevy) to the other (GMC). They all come off the same assembly lines, and the "build sheet" that accompanies the frame through the "mill' determines whether it is to be a Chevy or a GMC.

However.....Service after the sale is much better with GMC's than what you get from the Chevy Super Store. This means, fewer breakdowns and returns because the shops tend to do it right the first time. This, is what JD Power & Asc. uses to get their numbers. Cost over the period of ownership and consumer satisfaction with the overall priduct (includes the sales experience and service satisfaction).

In my experience, GMC shops have always maintained my trucks much better than the Chevy dealerships. That was also true of my last three chevy's.

GMCs get all the good metal and Chevy gets the salvage panels.

JK http://www.dieselplace.com/forum/smileys/hihi.gif

On a more serious note of all eight D/A I've owned none have needed any service (kept for <10,000 miles tho).

I wonder if the JD Power poll has anything to do w/ the GMC looking SOOOO much better than the Chevy, the owners covet them more http://www.dieselplace.com/forum/smileys/hihi.gif

My truck has over 40,000 miles with nary a problem. It's one of those genetic things. I understand there isn't a whole lot of genetic difference between us and scab mites, for instance. Yet, few as they are those differences make a huge, well, difference. Maybe it's like that between Chevy and GMC. Most of the genes are the same, but the ones that really count are in the GMCs.

Or maybe not....

All I know is that if I have a problem with my Chevy while traveling, there is more than likely a Chevrolet dealer a lot closer than the nearest GMC dealer, as they will not work on the other brand......which I think is major BS anyway.

I have a 01 GMC Yukon XL 1/2 ton that has 95000 miles on it, still drives like new and has been a joy to own.

I just bought (like 2 days ago...) an 01 Chevy Silverado D/A 3/4 ton, so I'll have these two cousins in the same family. Gotta say, these trucks are pretty damn nice. Blows my F-250 away for comfort, which is what I need.

Bragging: I looked for 3 months for a used 01 or 02 Duramax truck (Chevy, GMC--it didn't matter) with a crew cab and less than 100k miles. Couldn't find one for less than 28k, and they were pretty roughed up. Then, last Sunday, I saw an ad in the paper that seemed too good to be true. Get this: 01 2500HD diesel crew cab long box for $20,000. Not a bad price, but it was the mileage that caught my eye: 15,000 original miles. I brought the check with me for the test drive. Done deal.

Man, I really love this truck.http://www.dieselplace.com/forum/smileys/smiley4.gif

It's probably due to the business part. Have you noticed that a business will buy a "BASE" Chevy and in turn the boss will have a GMC for himself? I think both trucks are the same......... the chevy's just get the &hit beat out of'em. Nobody respects the "base model" truck, no matter what it is. However, if it's equiped fairly nice, they seem to take care of it. I see far far more nice GMC's than I do Chevy's.

Let the GMC guys talk. They have to be boastful, they know they are second fiddle in the GM family. Chevy is the largest selling brand, by far, in GMs stable!

Of course the GMC is a little larger than the Chevy in the dieselpage logo. It has to support the unsubstantiated egos of the GMC owners!!! http://www.dieselplace.com/forum/smileys/smiley36.gif

In the late 70's I would see GMCs unloading off of the carrier with Chevy tailgates and vise versa.

Sort of, the GMCs are only made from 12:30 til 14:30 Tuesday thru Thursday by the best assemblers after they have a fine catered lunch.

The Chevys are made the rest of the time by who ever shows up.

I love them both. I don't see why the hell you would pay more for a GMC and not get it fully loaded!!! I mean for the price you pay for a base GMC you could get a loaded Chevy. That's why you see nicer GMC's.

BlueOx03
10-29-2004, 03:32 PM
When you price both trucks compare the features. I used to think the GMCs were more too, but a base GMC come with more standard equipment than a base Chevy. If you put all the stuff on a base Chevy to even it up with a base GMC, it comes out to the same. At the top end the both have the same stuff and cost the same.

With my wise cracks aside......

Whatever you say about one, you say about the other. So if a Silverado is crrrap. Than so is a Sierra.

A Duramax by any other name is still a Duramax?

akdiesel
11-01-2004, 07:36 PM
I think this is just a plain "Per Capita" issue. There are more Silverado's on the road than Sierra's. Same with a Bens. More of them on the road now then befor and more of them in the shop.

I don't quit think it is a loyalty issue either. I have heard that GMC owners have a more brand loyalty than others. I know I do but that is just becuase I don't waist away 40 grand and I have seen Silverado owners take very good care of their trucks just the same.

In the past I believe GMC was held to a higher standard with in the company but today they are one in the same. Same factory just a different badge.

I opted for Chevrolet over GMC simply because the Chev. dealer has a very good service dept while the GMC dealer is severely lacking in that department. Only difference I see between the two vehicles is the name and some sheet metal. They both come off the line at Flint if I'm not mistaken.

Well about the dealers service department, my local GM dealer handles both Chevy & GMC. So it Will be hard for me to tell about the service Chevy vs GMC. By the way 2 of my sons drive GMC gassers. I do like the looks of the GMC front sheet metal over the Chevy.
