Hey guys, new to the diesel world of trucks. I just bought a 2004 2500hd Dmax with less then 600 miles on it and it smokes black at idle, smokes white smoke at highway speeds at certain times. Is this normal? Called the dealer and they advise its normal. Anyone else having these problems. Smokes goes away when a let off the accelerator and back to normal. Nothing shows up on the computer that theres something wrong. Other then that enjoying the the diesel truck. Please, help. Thanks

I would run it more and see what happens.

Ive heard of TDI's smoking a lot when they are new. Check when youre at 1000 miles.

Hey thanks, for your response. I just pass 625 miles and will continue to observe the truck. Thats what other people have been telling me is to put some miles on it. Thanks

That is absolutely not normal. I have two friends with 04 chevs and there are at least 8 other people in my neigborhood with '03-'05 Duramax's, none of them smoke, any color. I bought my truck with only 12 miles on it and there has never been any color smoke at any speed for 1100 miles. Edited by: jpekarek

Would it be injectors?

For the heck of it, check your oil and see if it smells like diesel
fuel. Also keep an eye on your coolant level. People have
said that coolant will make white smoke, if it leaks into the
combustion chamber.

Let us know how it pans out.

P.S. Welcome to the forum.

Probably LLY and needs the reflash, see LLY section.

Well over the weekend it puffed out a white smoke again and heard a noticible tapping noise from the engine while going about 65 mph and the truck lost power, it seem like it didn't want to go. Let off the accelerator, back on it and off it went again back to normal. I checked the oil and coolent all good to go. Making an appointment with the dealer to have it checked out. Still no indication of anything wrong on the computer. Will keep everyone updated.

Is it a LLY or LB7?

I have recently noticed on my 05 LLY, when I let it idle for some time, and then i drive the truck it white smokes, almost like a "cold smoke". I have changed oil once, everything seemed ok. I have noticed that my coolant was low, not LOW, but lower than I would expect from a 5000 mile vehicle. Haven't talked to dealer but will mention it to him when I do take it in, plan on calling tomorrow for other reasons, minor reasons. Will keep you posted if I find out anything.

It's a LLY.

Interested in what the dealer will tell you please keep me posted. I'm taking mine in as soon as I can take a day off from work.
