: Old subject, bigger tires??

Alright, I'm in a real dilema now. I've read all the previous posts about upgrading tires. I'm picking up my new truck tomorrow and here's my plan:

I want to put aftermarket wheels on the truck, either a 16x8 or a 17x8. I love the look of bigger tires like the 285, but was told today that bulletins are being sent to the dealers about not going past the 245 stock size to avoid transmission problems.

After spending this kind of $$ on a truck, I definitely don't want to screw with my warranty. However, I can't stand the look of the little 245's and have never owned a truck with "stock" tires. So far, I plan on going to Discount Tire on Thursday and just have them mount the 2 different size tires on my new wheels and see how each look on the truck. If the 265 still gives it the non-stock look and won't screw with my warranty, then I'll probably go that route.

I know this is a subject that has been beaten to death on these forums, but, I'm confused on what the "rules" are with the warranty. I know for a fact that tire & wheel upgrades make no difference in the warranty on Fords and Dodges. I had a Dodge with 33's and my friends have Fords with 35's and no issues from the dealers at all.

Thanks for any help or insite to my problem. :) :)

Get the 285 if u like them and keep the stock ones to put on for warranty work.

The techs here say GM wants the stock tires if u are having tranny problems.

I don't know how GM could bitch at anyone using 265 tires, as they ship them on the 3500 SRW, and the only change is a cheap steel wheel instead of the alloy. There may be ECM or transmission module changes, but Allison says the trans is the exact same unit off the exact same line.

From what I understand it won't void the warranty, but if you are
having transmission shift problems they may not work on it unless the
original tire size is installed. So if you are upgrading tires
and rims, keep the OEM's for warranty work, if needed.

285/75/16's. Needed tranny work and got no grief from the dealership. I think it all depends on your service manager.

Depends on the dealer / service writer. Just dropped my truck at Heard Chevrolet in Huntsville to fix a fuel leak (hopefully the pump or regulator NOT injectors), noticed 4 brand new trucks out front with 6" lift kits and 33" or bigger tires. Added $10k to the price but they told me it still carried the full warranty, no problems. They also didn't blink at my H2's, but I wasn't there for tranny problems.

Check around first.

Well, my dilema was solved today at the tire shop. We went to an aftermarket 16x8 wheel, then tried a few different tires. The 285 75 16 BFG AT fit just fine until the tire was turned. It rubbed big time and I would have had to cut a bunch of nice, new, painted plastic from the bottom corner of the bumper :( The 285's looked awesome, but, I could not justify cutting that much bumper off. Also, the torsions had already been adjusted to bring the front end up to level.

Next, we put a 265 75 16 on. It worked great, looked like it would clear. Well, sure enough, when we truned the tire in, it rubbed on the bottom corner just barely.

So, in summary, I went with the 265's. I trimmed about 1/2" off that bottom corner of the bumper plastic. It still has the wider stance as compared to tires on the stock 6.5" wide wheels and the tires are a little bigger than stock. I'll have some pictures up tomorrow after the truck gets cleaned as it's been raining for 2 days here. :)Edited by: B-Rad502

Well, here's a shot of the new 265's. Still gives it that "non-stock" look without sacrificing too much power or mileage!http://www.dieselplace.com/forum/smileys/smiley1.gif

i like the rims too.

also once you had your truck for about 4 months you will start to look at the warrenty thing differntly.

when i firt got my truck i wanted to keep it stock for ever since 35k is a big price tag i did not want to screw with any warenty.

as of right now i got h2 rims on the way and planning on puting 33's with in a few weeks.
