: Extension Housing Break
emkay 07-14-2007, 03:31 PM hi guys, we detached the tc and extension housing on a friends truck today as it was leaking from the extension housing.
i attached some pictures, hope you can see the break. now my question, is this a known issue, could you imagine how this came, are there fixes we can do now so that it does not happen again? it seems the extension housing was uninsalled in the pas already as of severeal scratches of maybe a screwdriver insied...
the truck is a 2003 exc sb, no mods, approx. 100k miles on it. it is supposed to come from a texan oilfield company. so i expect no mods in the past like e.g. tuner.
thanks for your hepl!
mike
IOWA LLY 07-14-2007, 03:38 PM Were all the nuts that hold the transfer case on tight??
Are the u-joints ok on the rear driveshaft?
dmaxalliTech 07-15-2007, 08:00 PM check the u joints etc for driveline vibration. Known issue, even GM has TSB's on it.
gtmax 07-15-2007, 08:51 PM As Eric has stated. Used to work at a driveshaft & differential shop the only way you can tell that a u-joint is shot (aside from the obvious) is to pull the driveshaft and feel the action of the joints.
A visual or it looks alright won't cut it. Also your cheap discount joints are crap--remember the name Spicer when shopping for u-joints.
emkay 07-16-2007, 10:58 AM eric, gtmx, iowa lly,
thanks for your help. I will check the u-joint and tell him to replace it anyway as this seems to be an issue. what if the u-joint is okay (what I think is not the case as the car has 100k miles on it)?
thanks, mike
SmokeShow 07-16-2007, 11:27 AM Mine did the same (going down the interstate, leaked all fluid out, fried transmission and didn't know til I stopped for fuel and couldn't move when I was done), hence the stage III Suncoast in it now. ;) Culprit, bad u-joint at rear of driveshaft. Resolve, rebuild and PUT A TRANSFER CASE BRACE ON IT FROM SUNCOAST. :D

Mr BaadBoy 07-16-2007, 12:01 PM Put a transfer case brace on it from suncoast. :d :exactly: c-ya[/quote]
emkay 07-16-2007, 03:27 PM talked to the guy that owns the truck today and guess what? he told me that there was some kind of noise/ clunk when shifting or when applying "drive" out of "neutral". so I guess that the "causig issue" is found now, I will tell him to update the joints, try to get a new extension housing (eric, think you have it in stock, what would be the price for the housing/ joints shipped to germany? and how long would it take?).
as the truck is not tuned and should stay stock, or maybe a little tune such as an edge or so, would you really brace it? I mean those tuners dont even limp the tranny...
thanks guys, you really helped a lot!!
mike
SmokeShow 07-16-2007, 03:34 PM YES, still brace it. It cracked once without the brace didn't it??? It can, and may, do it again if you don't. ;) BTW, my truck was COMPLETELY stock when the case cracked.
ratlover 07-16-2007, 04:07 PM I blew up the rear housing and my joints were ok. I was abusing it pretty hard though........
I wish I woulda bought the brace.........
emkay 07-16-2007, 04:29 PM okay guys, I´m convinced... I will tell the guy to order the brace together with the housing and the u-joints.
thanks again!
mike
p.s.: happy to have my brace here already to get it installed on my ruck soon :D (together with 1057, all alto powerpacks, full transgo, lockup boost valve, etc).
