I just got a notice that I should bring in my truck to have the tailgate cables inspected and replaced. Have any of you actually got the job done yet?

Got mine installed yesterday!

Truck feels a lot faster now and I am sure that the economy has increased as well.

Awesome!

Mine are being done as we speak along with my injectors. http://www.dieselplace.com/forum/smileys/smiley2.gif I'm certain the new cables will make my new injectors hold up longer.

I think you will definately see some mileage and horsepower inprovements from the cables.

Both of mine broke when the tailgate suddenly dropped with the truck in motion. Happened durng a Colorado hunting trip when a buddy didn't get the tailgate closed completely. Luckily, the tailgate wasn't damaged. Drove to Cook Chevrolet in Craig, Co where some very nice people took care of me and replaced the cables with the stainless steel version without any waiting. No cost to me and I was out the door in 15 minutes.

Had mine done today. Made in China and look just like the originals. So much for pride of Made in the USA. Another dumb-dumb by GM.

Voted early today as well. At least that was a positive experience, other than being out numbered by liberal Kerry/Edwards folks. They must be afraid of the droves of conservatives that will vote on Tuesday to re-elect George and Dick. Hopefully, Nevadans can get rid of Harry Reid as well.

I am afraid to take mine in for fear that they will notice all my mods. I think I'm going to just stick with the old cables.

I had one of mine break when I was sitting on the tailgate. Fortunatley (for me) the other one held up. I asked the dealer what they charge if it were not for the warranty. 19.72 ea. thats not installed. The stainless ones are lots more flexible then the original...

Mine broke earlier this summer, both at once, but no damage. Happened on a Saturday afternoon, dealer was closed, but NAPA was open, got a pair for $14. They're sealed to protect against moisture, an improvement over the originals. NOW GM is telling me they have them in stock......think I will just wait and see how many notices I receive.http://www.dieselplace.com/forum/smileys/smiley9.gif

Same here, I had already replaced them when one broke about a year ago - I had just tossed the old ones in the toolbox. Took them in and walked out with the new ones. Still have the set I bought on the truck, but not for very much longer.

I have not replaced mine but have to go and see what they have for me. I donot think my tail gate is on totally even in that one cable seems taut and the other has a looseness to it. Tailgate was hard to open also and lost but found the plastic thing that surrounds the pullhandle for the tailgate. Since replacing that it seems a little easier to open the tailgate, go figure.

Now I feel much safer with CHINA cables on! http://www.dieselplace.com/forum/smileys/smiley18.gif

RVER,

I have the same problem as you, just had stainless cables put on, 1 is tight, the other has slack. The old cables were both tight with the tailgate down. Is it that China can't make 2 cables the same length or GM can't make a level tailgate, or is there a left and right cable?http://www.dieselplace.com/forum/smileys/smiley2.gif

Ok guys, I have a question. I still have the old ones on, when I got my truck one of them was tight and the other had a little slack. After loading my atv once, now they both are tight, but the side where the slack one was at now the hinge is messed up and the tailgate will not shut properly. Will the dealer fix my hinge also?

Max Owner
10-31-2004, 10:28 PM
I kinda think they will.

Maybe only if the damage was caused by the straps breaking. ?

RVER
11-01-2004, 06:20 PM
Hustler, I have the exact same thing. When I open my tailgate, it is hard to open and once the cover over the latch fell out because I have to really pull at the latch. The left one is slack the right tight.

Seems like the tailgate is not on straight to me.

bigbossdiesel
11-01-2004, 07:26 PM
part of the recall that is being done is that the tech is supposed to check the hinge on the right side because some of them are bent also in addition to the cables there are supposed to be 2 washers installed due to a differance in thickness of the cable ends due to the differance in thickness of each one(poor workmanship)

bigbossdiesel
11-01-2004, 07:30 PM
by the way i almost forgot there is a cable marked for the right side and the left side but i haven't paid much attention as to what the differace is

Thanks for the info Bigbossdiesel.

My right hinge is the one that is bad. I guess when I am able to find a dealer and when I am able to get in, I will get if fixed also.

K folks, let's talk about CHEAP.... on my 82 C10 2wd scsb, 2 round bales, tailgate down, guy loading bales pushed down so hard there are 2 slots in the T gate where tractor loader pulled out.... NO PROBLEMS with straps or gate... move on to 02 K2500cclb... 1 round bale .... rolled it off bed.... bent T gate, wouldn't shut until I hammered hinges back into place. Friends with fords and dodges report same. Guess trucks aren't made for work now, huh?????

I got my VR Straps Saturday.

These beat the hell out of any cable straps. Yeah, they were pricey, but to me, well worth it!!!

Anyone want a free set of original tailgate cables?http://www.dieselplace.com/forum/smileys/hihi.gif

I took my cables in today and they were not really happy about just handing me the new ones. They finally did and wrote it up as though I could not bring my truck in because it had a camper on it or something. I did not want to take my truck in because I wasn't sure about how they would feel about certains mods. At least it is done and I am safe again.

Funny thing about the tailgates being flimsy. Brother in law
works for a chemical company, that does work for GM. They have
something that will stengthen the gate. Co worker of his rented a
GM truck, drove to Detroit to demonstrate how new chemical process
would strengthen tailgate. GM wasn't interested.

Sprayed chemical stuff inside of tailgate. Took company tailgate
to Detroit to show GM execs. Removed rental tailgate, proped up
on 6X6's and drove truck over gate. You know what happened.
Did same with company gate, and the deflection was measured at less
than 1" Soon as weight was off gate, sprung back into place.

Company paid for a new tailgate. Co-worker got a mild scolding.

Got off work early. Pulled in the local dealers service area. Handed the service writer my cables and the letter. Said "I have a deal for you. Trade me these for the new ones and give one of your tech's some free time." They didn't even flinch. Asked what the miles where, handed me the new straps, had me sign the paper work, said nice BowTie and sent me on my way. I never got out of the truck. Edited by: WanaDmxsub

My truck did not start last week. GM towed it to the dealer and replaced the tailgate straps . It now runs so much better.

"They wont trade mine...gotta bring the rig in"

My dealer needed the truck too. One cable broke while
I was loading my ATV. Fortunately the other held http://www.dieselplace.com/forum/smileys/smiley3.gif

So far Chevy has done the following under warrenty:
Dealer installs fifth gear inhibitor switch and circuit under
warrenty
Dealer replaces Steering bearing
Dealer replaces steering shaft
Dealer installs stainless steel tailgate cables
Dealer reflashed TCM twice

Love the truck and the service http://www.dieselplace.com/forum/smileys/smiley2.gif

WanaDmxsub, I'm suprised you didn't take the bars off and go to the new improved cables. http://www.dieselplace.com/forum/smileys/smiley2.gif

Anyhow for those interested if you kept your recall form and reimbursement form I now can send you an sales receipt that you can send to GM. I'm not sure how much reimbursement you'll get but if it helps defray the cost of the replacement bars it seems like a win win situation.

All you need to do is e-mail me with your real name, address(in case I don't have it anymore) and a return e-mail address(so I can send you the PDF file you can print and send with). The e-mail is in my signature.

One of mine broke while moving haybales. Took 3 trips to the dealership to get the new straps. Tailgate and hinges were damaged, so I was advised to get an estimate from a body shop. Got the estimate, now the dealer wants to try and fix the hinges themselves. They failed to get it fixed with the last visit. I am not a happy camper. Hope you guys get the new straps done before the old ones break!

did my cables and the left one is still loose. they are replacing both hinges and they are on order. Now it opens well(it was hard before).

NOw my truck pass window will not open and the radio does not stay on after i shut motor off like it used to. the radio will play for about 10 min IF you do not open the door but now shuts with the key off.

Not sure what happened there but expect the dealer will know, think maybe it is a fuse but will let them figure it out.
