: Anyone have trouble programming a tuner?
Max Payne 10-26-2004, 10:12 AM I recently aquired a Bully Dog Power Pup. When trying to program, it reads "unlocking PCM" for about 10 seconds, stops, and reads "ERROR 00". After this, the truck will not crank, until I disconnect the batteries. When this happens, I cannot communicate with a Tech 2, until I disconnect the batteries. I tried programming with the 4 fuses removed as per the instructions, and I also tried with all the fuses in place, no dice. I am a GM Tech, so programming is a day to day thing for me. After a battery disconnect, every module has U codes stored. Has anyone ran into this before? This tuner is new, and has a Version 1.16, 21 NOV 03 Part #043566. Yes, my truck has stock programming and has not been reflashed. Any advice would be appreciated.
VFRRider 10-26-2004, 11:26 AM I have had a similar problem with my Quad. Locks up during install/uninstall of tunes. Quad has a procedure to follow in the instructions for when it freezes, which tells me this is a common problem or is to be expected. It says if the tuner freezes up or does not progress, turn your key to the off position, disconnect the cable from the aldl, start your engine and run it for 15 seconds and begin again. It says the tuner will go back to the step where it locked and remember the information it recieved. I've had this problem since I've got it, and it's a roll of the dice if it works or not. I had a big problem early on, when it would not reload my stock tune and ended up causing a "RSE Error" which is the rear seat entertainment (DVD). My DVD would no longer work and I was getting this error when starting the truck across the display on the radio. You wouldn't think a programmer would have anything to do with it but it did, I had to take it in and have the ECM Reflashed with stock info, and then it worked fine. I've had those error messages come up when loading tunes again, and I've had to back out and reload the stock tunes before screwing anything up again.
My understanding is the Bullydog and Quad Programmers use the same hardware and chipsets, just their own programming loaded is the only difference. I currently cannot load my 165 Tune, It freezes every time, I've got the 135 in and am leaving it alone for fear of it crashing again. When I sent it in to Quad for an update to 1.20, I sent a letter along requesting it be looked at explaining the problem. It came back with the update, and same problems http://www.dieselplace.com/forum/smileys/smiley24.gif. I'm done with programmers and I'm waiting for something different/better/bigger to get my hands on. Good luck. I'd send it back and get an edge/attitude if I were you.

Max Payne 10-26-2004, 06:15 PM Yeah, I will have to send it back but Bully Dog wants me to return it to the dealer I bought it from, who happens to be a member here that traded it to me. Also involves international shipping back and forthhttp://www.dieselplace.com/forum/smileys/smiley7.gif I am trying work with Bully Dog to get it handled directly to avoid the hassle.

For Ease of troubleshooting, Call John at bullydog and explain the situation to them. They will get it done. They have a good reputation.

Max Payne 10-27-2004, 05:30 PM I have tried now on three '03 trucks and one '02, no dice. I even removed the cap at splice pack 205 and jumpered only the BCM (must be online to send wake up call to modules at key-on) PCM and DLC to the data line. Ther could be no possible interference from any other modules, still, "ERROR 00_". Must just be a bad module. I really wanted to be able to blame myself too.
Got Juice? 10-28-2004, 01:03 AM Did you call John at BullyDog yet?http://www.dieselplace.com/forum/smileys/smiley1.gif
CYCLONE 10-28-2004, 09:40 AM CALL ME I WILL TRADE YOU OUT FOR A NEW ONE OR JUST SEND IT TO ME WITH A NOTE AND I WILL SEND YOU A NEW ONE
CYCLONE 10-28-2004, 09:43 AM DID YOU PULL THE PROPER FUSES?
Got Juice? 10-28-2004, 09:47 AM Oops... i just noticed you have an '03. If you don't pull the fuses (or at the very least have all accessories turned off, you can get this error.
Max Payne 10-28-2004, 10:30 AM Yes, I have talked to Bully Dog, they have told me "it must be a bad tuner" and they want me to send it back to whichever "retailer " that I bought it from. CYCLONE, thank you very much for the offer, and I will keep you in mind if I cannot get any help. I pulled the four required fuses, and also turned off the HVAC, RADIO, and HEADLAMPS, with the doors shut and the key in the RUN position. It shows "Unlocking VIN" for about ten seconds, then, "ERROR00_", at which time the DIC begins to read "average MPG- -" and the truck will not crank. Hooking up a Tech 2 shows all modules online, except for the PCM. The PCM doesn't even show up in the Class 2 DTC list. If I try to use the Tech 2 to pull the PCM programming, it shows no communication. At this point I disconnect both NEG battery cables, reconnect and all is well, and the DIC now reads my ODO reading. I get a ton of U codes, and the one that stands out is U1301, which is high voltage on the data line. I believe that this is putting the PCM in a fail-safe mode. I even tried isolating all other class 2 devices via the SP205 (data line splice pack). I have also tried this on an 02, no dice. I think I have tried everything. Thanks to all for the suggestions.
