I just got my new 2005 2500 ram this past week. This is my first diesel and so far I love it, other than the diesel prices. I have a question though. When I shut the engine off, it makes a screeching noise, is that normal for a diesel? Thanks for your help.

Look at the old posts and one guy had belt breakage. He heard the same screaching that many of us do. I bought a goodyear gatorback replacement belt and keep it under the back seat in case I need it. According to some this belt makes the noise go away.

Screeching is normal. The high compression of a diesel stops the
pulleys so fast they skid a little. It has nothing to do with belts
coming off. It's normal.

Simple fix. GOODYEAR GATORBACK BELT! Kills the squeak (which doesn't hurt anything) and lasts a really long time.

Ive noticed it's just the automatics that do this. FYIhttp://www.dieselplace.com/forum/smileys/smiley1.gif

It is the fan dis-engaging. I read the owners manual and it was in there.

The squeek is just part of being a Cummins. Just like the shake at shut down, sorta like a wet dog shaking water off his back. I had a Powerstroke for 7 years, and went back to Cummins....I had a '96 and it was a good truck. Powerstroke does not squeek or shake at shut down. Yep, the '96 Cummins squeeked, too. All new Cummins owners have the concern about the squeek, it is a strange phemomenon, but harmless. I know, I know...people snap their heads, wondering what is wrong with the engine, and also wonder why you seem oblivious to it. Sorta funny to see the looks on their faces.

My truck did it for a few weeks just after I got it about 2 months ago,
I got a new factory mopar belt from where I work, the new belt almost
had a cloth like material, or something on the ribs, It doesnt screech
anymore, hasnt for a month and a half, and no problems.http://www.dieselplace.com/forum/smileys/smiley4.gif

No doubt it has the heavy duty feel to it when she shuts down. Sometimes the whole truck shakes.
