: another rusted brand new fuel filter....
gsxr1216 10-26-2004, 07:58 AM what A POS this stock filter is, i bought a three pack last year for my truck, first one i put on looked great, changed the oil last night yank the old fuel filter off, didnt see any rust in it (got to cut it open tonight) open the new one, put on top o-ring, flip it over to screw in the WIF sensor and BINGO i can see rust inside it, lots of it... nice now got a $20 useless filter now.... wish i would have seen that before i took it out of the wrapper..... guess i wont be buying these in multiple lots anymore.. i will include pics of the old and new later tonight.... guess i better spray the last one i got with WD-40 and put it in a new wrapper before it rusts too.... OC_DMAX 10-26-2004, 08:18 AM Who did you buy them from?
gsxr1216 10-26-2004, 08:50 AM http://oilguard.com
thats the place i where i got them.
i also bought a Napa one from Eric, thats the one thats on it now, luckily i had that one or i would be up a creek with no paddle.....
dmaxalliTech 10-26-2004, 10:01 AM That must have been along time ago,, I remember having to buy some of them once to fill some orders...
gsxr1216 10-26-2004, 10:13 AM yeah it was over the winter some time probly feb/march???
i guess these filters should have a "use by date" on them like milk from the store!!!!!!!http://www.dieselplace.com/forum/smileys/smiley1.gif
chuntag95 10-26-2004, 11:24 AM Born on dating for fuel filters .....http://www.dieselplace.com/forum/smileys/smiley20.gif Maybe we should patend the idea. http://www.dieselplace.com/forum/smileys/hihi.gif
OC_DMAX 10-26-2004, 03:14 PM The filters that I received from Oilguard were also rusted (around a year ago). There have been several posts here and on The Diesel Page on this topic and Oilguard. I believe several have returned the filters to Oilguard for a refund.
dmaxalliTech 10-26-2004, 04:13 PM Thats not good for them..... Guess cheapest isnt always the best huh?

I suspect price has nothing to do with it. A manufacturing problem by Racor, having nothing to do with Oilguard. Others, including George M. had purchased filters around this time from their GM dealers parts department and received rusted filters also (and the GM dealers are definetly NOT low cost).
Subsequent filters that I have received from Lubespecialist (for an excellent price) were OK. They appear to have a different finish on the interior metal. Also made in Korea.
gsxr1216 10-26-2004, 07:27 PM man, gets even worse, i have another one i bought from oilgard i found on my shelf, still in the package thats rusted also..... wish i had my receipt...
as for the cheapest price comment, i guess seeing as everyone knows theres only one manufacturer of these filters and that they are ALL the same i saw no reason not to go with the cheapest place.....
well heres my filter pic, 4000 miles on the fuel filter (didnt want to be replacing it over the winter so it got changed early) i must say its dirtier than i expected, but ZERO rust or gunk in the can, just dirty filter media, got to love primrose for taking care of that water!

and the pics of the NEW filter right out of the package looking through the WIF hole, kinda hard to see but you can see the rust on the filter walls, i would cut the filter, but i'm hoping i can get a refund or replacement first??

Ace_of_Chaos 10-26-2004, 07:48 PM gsxr1216 - I feel your pain on the rusty filters, but I was wondering what kind of cutter that is in your pics. Where would a guy find one and what would it cost ?
Thanks for any info !
gsxr1216 10-26-2004, 08:22 PM i got it from summit racing, its a tavia filter cutter, somewhere in the $50 range if i remember right?????? i looked quick on summit racing and they have it for $70 now, i dont remember paying that much for it though??? of course i might just have a bad memory........ shop around!
OC_DMAX 10-26-2004, 08:50 PM I paid $70 for the same cutter from Summit about a year ago.
dmaxalliTech 10-26-2004, 11:27 PM cheapest price comment wasnt meant that way. Only that perhaps they are cheap(er) cause they are old stock? I dunno regardless. I have kept an eye on the filters I send out and am yet to find any fortunatly. One thing I like about the Frams is that they are wrapped in plastic.. Maybe this helps? I notice that the OEM's are not wrapped. Are the oil guards? Perhaps that may be the problem. Hard to say I guess...
jholly 10-26-2004, 11:42 PM I paid $70 for the same cutter from Summit about a year ago.
I paid about $5. It's a hacksaw.
Jim
tophog 10-27-2004, 01:35 AM I bought 6 from oil guard last year ...all in plastic. 3 were rusted and replaced without any question.
gsxr1216 10-27-2004, 07:32 AM mine were all in plastic also from oil guard???? do any of them not come in plastic?
as for the hacksaw to open filters, dont do you much good when cutting oil filters and tranny filters and checking for small metal particles since the saw puts metal into the filter when cutting. if your simply looking for rust in the fuel can thats fine though...
dmaxalliTech 10-27-2004, 12:25 PM OEM filters do not come in plastic
Max Owner 10-27-2004, 12:58 PM The Baldwin filter comes in plastic. However the plastic is folded over and taped. Still will alow moisture in.
