I have been using the search engine but can't find what I need. A friend with a 2004.5 said his trans would not go after setting for 15 days. I can't remember what the fix is. Can someone post a link or tell me what the fix is? Thanks. Frank

Hey Frank. The only thing that I remember is something about the "back flow". I think that someone started the truck and let it warm up......then turned it off for a moment, cranked it back up and took off? Of course.... there is the NTSB thing ....don't know if that would make a difference?

PM dmaxallitech if he doesn't see this post within a day or two.
My bet is, he knows exactly what you need to do. I don't remember
all the details but there is something about drain back (try searching
for drainback or drain back). I believe there is a tech service
bulletin addressing this issue.

I have had a problem with mine not going into gear unless I let it warm up or start it and shut it off and restart. There is a TSB #03-07-30-011A dated 3/7/2004 that covers this problem but it doesn't list the 2004.5, only the 2001-2003. Maybe dmaxallitech can help. Mine is going in next week for this problem.

I was about to post a similar problem, I was wondering if it was the same thing. Early '04 DMax/Allison, 11k easy miles, no mods, Texas. Every once in a great while, after the truck sits overnight, when I start it and put it in reverse to pull out of the garage, it just sits there like it's in neutral. I give it some gas, er diesel, and the engine spins up quite a bit, then the trans starts to slowly engage and the truck starts creeping backward slowly. By the time it's completely out of the garage, the trans is more or less pulling "normal". Fluid level checks ok. Is this what you guys are talking about? I know the GM service dept. will not be able to duplicate, so I won't bother until it becomes a consistent problem.
Thanks-
Same thing happens with my LLY and my dads 01' with the 8.1 after they sit a few days.

This drain back has been a problem since 2001, do you park the truck on a hill to cause this problem??
I have left my truck stand for days at a time and never had a problem, temperatures range in the +90F to the -30F.

Yup, you guys are right, its the drain back deal. It is present even on the 04's. Its very likely that the dealer will be able to duplicate this as the truck has to sit so long and who wants to be with out there truck that long? I would bring it to the attention of the service mgr that your truck has the condition. Explain that you are aware of the fix for it and that it is inconsistant. He should be open to this as there is no way of telling how often/long it has to sit for it to occur. If that goes no where, then go up the ladder. There is a fix and it does work so no reason not to have it repaired. Parking the truck on an incline should have no effect on this. Its just two little springs that need to be replaced in the stator support to fix. Trans must be removed to install.

I let my truck sit all winter in the garage last year and when I started it up to get it out of the garage I put it in gear and drove it out no problem. It sat for about 4 months.

Thanks for the info, at least I now know what it is. I've developed a good relationship with the service writer (he fills out his own customer surveys), we'll see how far I get.

dmaxalliTech,
I searched the TSB section but apparently your post from a while back
TSB # 03-07-011 and #03-07-011B ("Torque Converter bleed down")
is no longer there. I also came up with
03-07-30-031B JAN 04 A/T - Allison 1000, Slips/Leaks Vehicle Won't Move
from Alldata.com. I was wondering if you have the text handy for either or both of these TSBs so I know what the details are.
Thanks in advance-Edited by: L8Apex

I have the same problem and it started with approx. 800 miles on the truck. I will be taking it in to the dealer later this week (33,000 mi) to have it documented and/or fixed under warranty. Has anyone with this problem had major transmission problems later on? It seems to be fine after the converter fills with fluid. I know it's not normal but I would have thought they would have fixed it by the 2004 model. My neighbor with a 2001 GMC is starting to have the same bleed down problem.
