I just purchased a 04 Dmax with 27k miles, not sure if the trans fluid has ever been changed....but this past weekend I was pulling my boat up a steep hill (takes over 10min to get to the top) and I saw the temps get up to about 225ish it was about 110 outside. Is this normal? Would it be wise to change the fluid and spin on filter? Thanks

I say since you dont know if the fluid and spin on have not been change, start with that. By the way, is your '04 a LB7 or LLY? LLY are know for have overheat problems. Maybe you should think about upgading our trans cooler to the MikeL cooler.

T/H mode on?

Change the spin on filter first and check the fluid level, it should be in the middle of the gauge. Overfilling it with fluid is a surefire way to get the transmission hot.

My 05 is running some higher temps too.

Truck is empty: Around town driving, not towing, air temp is around 100, tranny temp is around 210-220. Is this something I should be concerned a bout?

Its an LLY... and I can't remember if I had the tow haul on or not. I've read that transynd is a good fluid to replace with, but where can I get around Fresno, Ca. Do I need to flush the hole system or can I mix? Thanks

Almost any truck repair facility will carry Transynd and yess you can mix it.

They charged me $33.35 a gallon for the Transynd and $8.25 for the spin on filters. There will be a magnet on top of the filter so clean it and reply it.

For around town temps when it is hot out I use T/H mode to keep the tranny temp in check. Stays a tick below 200 with T/H on and will go a tick above with it off. That's 110 OAT!!

I'd say with OAT that high that that temp isn't bad at all. My trans runs just below 200 on the guage with the truck empty when its 110 outside (like yesterday).

'05s generaly run hotter because of pump design.

So should I worry about around town temps at 210 to 220 when it's about 100 to 1005 outside?

(Tomorrow) For GP I'm going to have the tranny fluid changed.

Also; should Iworry about the 05 pump design? Perhaps consider changing it, adding a trann ooler etc? Please advise!?

Above 200 seems high to me, I'd use to run that high but , I bought a 6" fan from summit and know i ran 25 degrees cooler.I heard if you can ran 160 consistantly you can double the life of your trans.

BTW, do you think running Water Wetter too would be a good idea, or not?

Watter wetter is a good product and I use it in my truck but it is not going to help your tranny temps any.

DEWFPO,

So what's the fix for cooler tranny temps?

DEWFPO,

So what's the fix for cooler tranny temps?

One of Mike L.'s coolers. It's proven to take temps down at least 20F. You might consider giving him a call.

Mike has come up with a transmission cooler that is a direct replacement of your stock cooler, should take no longer than 30 mintues to put in. Most people who are using it have seen a 20 degree drop in transmission temp, on average.

My '05 runs in this range everyday if the ambient temp is above 75F. Often it gets to 200. This is empty but I climb a lot of steep grades at lower speeds.

Not to worry Flo Jo,
