: Couldn’t get past the Service Writer
Mackin 10-25-2004, 04:01 PM http://www.dieselplace.com/forum/smileys/smiley7.gif
Let the games begin. First I'm very Pessimistic, very much so about putting my truck in the hands of another not knowing their level of skills on these engines.
My truck has injector issues. Not so much performance just Idle concerns, surging and extreme knocking. It will turn heads at a stop idling in gear,it's time unfortunately.
The problem is very intermediate so I figured I'd cruise on in when it was clucking loudly and get a diagnose via Tech II to get the ball rolling.I also volunteered my Tech II snap shots.
No dice!http://www.dieselplace.com/forum/smileys/smiley7.gif
Service writers says we can't just give individuals injectors that come through the door. WTF kind of comment is that!!?? I explained in detail what was going on and they are up to date on the replace all 8 champaign. That isn't what I'm asking for clearly a quick Snap Shot will show you a -8+.
I think he gave me a line of BS on diagnosing to comply with GM's policy.
I ask what is the proper diagnostic procedure, today?
Mac
Diesel Power 10-25-2004, 04:50 PM so what did he say? did you get it to knock in front of
them? i feel your pain.. it took me almost 2 weeks for the dealer
to agree to fix my buddy's injectors.. he took it in they sent him
home.. so i went back, said i was him and had to fight fight fight for
them. i had to demand they put in writing "WHY THE INJECTOR
BALANCES RATE FOR #8 WAS -8!"... two days after that they said
that it turns out i was right... at least they had them in stock
and i only had to wait for the tech..
Dr Crane 10-25-2004, 07:52 PM When I brought mine in last Feb with knocking complaints they gave me no problems, hooked up tech II, no codes found balance rates were in spec (barely). Tech said sorry, can't do nothin for you. I said don't worry, I'll be back.... It took 8 months for hard start condition to pop up. Hammering noise drove me nuts, got tired of explaining it to people. For me it took 14 visits to the dealer for three problem I very nicely explained the solution for on the first visit. Now that I've been right all three times, they do whatever I ask. But it takes time and patience....a lot of patience! People take offence when someone comes off as knowing more than they do. People skills Mac, people skills...breathe deep....http://www.dieselplace.com/forum/smileys/hihi.gif
I also always try to wear my jacket with the ASE patch on it! Can't hurt.
Maybe I could loan it to youhttp://www.dieselplace.com/forum/smileys/smiley2.gifEdited by: Dr Crane
patrick 10-26-2004, 09:10 PM I agree with all the info we share as techs to all of you. It must be funny when you guys go in knowing all the info even more than the tech. Now you all cant replaced them but you understand what is causing the issues. I have to give alot of thanks to all the tech who write in and give there input. I saves you all time and blood psi pills.
When I was fired from the dealer I last worked I was just going to start on an injector job. I spoke with Tom and informed him of his trucks needs, and the extended injector warranty. well I got fired the day I was to rip into the truck. A day later Tom a diesel place member e-mailed me. Told me of the issues at the dealer. They told him the fuel pump and injectors where bad and he had to buy the pump and pay the labor $3500 ? if not they would not replace the injectors.
I told Tom how to check the pump for flow and what the spec was. I told him to call the dealer and aks for the spec.
He called got a line of BS and called me back.
To make the story funny I never worked on his truck and when I picked up my tools his truck was still parked in the same spot from 3 days ago. I know they never opened the hood. I told him this and some hoe he got the dealer to renig on the pump issue. He got the injectors replaced took 3 days.I smiled knowing no other tech in the shop ad done them. 3 day i would take 4 hrs or so.
Dealers are the wores examples of automotive knowlege.
Its all about the techs if a dealer had no tech who could get it done in crunch time the dealer would be out of business.
3 dealers I have worked for all beleave in Sales as the key. I think its service. If we cant fix em you wont buy them. Not to menton you allready got screw on the sale....Patrick
Mackin 10-26-2004, 09:31 PM Well I'll find out Monday she goes in for diagnostic.
Mac
Good luck MAC... I hope they hook you up. I stopped in a big dealer
down here to pick up tuneup parts for my wifes Blazer. I asked if they
had plenty of DMax injectors in stock, he said.... "how many you need?"
04DMCC4X4 10-27-2004, 12:08 AM http://www.dieselplace.com/forum/smileys/smiley32.gifI wish there where more techs like Patrick aroundhttp://dieselplace.com/forum/smileys/smiley20.gif, every trip to the dealer usually hurts the pocket book if the dealer has their wayhttp://www.dieselplace.com/forum/smileys/smiley18.gif. It doesn't make any sense paying almost the amount that you can buy a house for in some states for a truckhttp://www.dieselplace.com/forum/smileys/smiley5.gif, and the dealer give you a hard time.http://www.dieselplace.com/forum/smileys/smiley7.gif Edited by: 04DMCC4X4
Mackin 10-27-2004, 05:46 AM Thinking ahead....
Anyone have decent experience with Chevrolet dealers in CT?
Mac
dmaxalliTech 10-27-2004, 12:31 PM Mac, I know of a few of them, but nothing local to you. Closest is about 800 miles..
Dr Crane 10-27-2004, 07:28 PM Mac; I've been dealing with Carter Chevrolet in Manchester, I've got them pretty much whipped into shape. Dave, the tech there is pretty good by now, he's been getting a lot of practice with injectors lately. I think he's a member of the "Page". Dave had put in his notice when I brought my truck in this last time but they apparently came to an agreement. I mentioned I might have to go to Crowley, they all laughed at me and said good luck!
Mackin 10-27-2004, 08:27 PM I wonder if Dave has tools will travel!http://www.dieselplace.com/forum/smileys/smiley2.gif
I just am not sure if I have faith in where I'm going ,did take them three times to get the E-brake to function after I was told it was normal. The parking sucks!
I could go to Wilton but that's two hours round trip same as Manchester for me,have to rent a car or hang for the duration.
Have to get it done nonetheless. At the rate Hoot tells me these trucks are going down that all the dealers must have experience.
Without doubt I'll have a laundry list of take a good look around the truck inside and out ,I expect it to be picked up in the same condition unwashed as it is left today. All in preparation of the actual upcoming repair.
I'm mostly out sourcing because I feel they will miss diagnose the problem. This way ,I wont return there.
So Thanks for the information it just might come in handy.
Mac
Mackin 11-01-2004, 05:52 PM OK with out showing my hand as we never know who's lurking so I'll share a abbreviated hour + of valued dealer time. http://www.dieselplace.com/forum/smileys/smiley17.gif
If the repair goes as well as the diagnostic did I'll be in great shape. What started off as unsettling has turned an about face.
My concern was when I arrived at the dealer my truck would shown no symptoms,it was true to the word similar when doing to the doctors while waiting in the waiting room, suddenly the pains disappear.
After speaking with the service writer he put me right with the shop Foreman, great guy mind you. After some discussion ,his Tech II diagnostic and viewing some stored Data (http://www.dieselplace.com/forum/smileys/smiley9.gif) he (we) got together with the guy who OK'd the 8 injectors to be placed on order.
I even got my Tech II updated while I was there . I also offered up my Max to the foreman for a road test to confirm all is well in the end,he's a friendly by the way ( I shared some information),for his well appreciated time in handling my warranty repair.
Whew I feel better,so Hoot your still on your own for a bit longer!
Mac http://www.dieselplace.com/forum/smileys/smiley32.gifEdited by: Mackin
Good going Mac. Hopefully you'll be completely satisfied when the job
is complete. Did they tell you how long the injectors will take to get?
Mackin 11-01-2004, 06:26 PM 4-6 weeks ,but I'll bet it's sooner. They have done a few already (the foreman had his done and he owns a 03). He said that most show a high return rate and slow light up of course,as was the case with his.
Mine was a bit unique,as the guy above the Foreman said, his words as he viewed all the data.
Mac
problemchild 11-01-2004, 09:16 PM Heres the solution........
Start with the service manager.
Bring the problem and the solution (tsb)
Tell them your brother in x location (out of state) is a dmaxtech certified.
Tell them he told you what was wrong when he was out on vacation last weekend.
That he looked up the tsb to help them fix it.
Worked for me......
I handed them a list of 19 problems......

4-6 weeks is nuts.
The local BIG dealer in DE might have them in stock now.
Call for the heck of it... just to piss yourself off.
NuCar Connection

Max Power 11-01-2004, 09:38 PM I was told that if your truck is down it is a lot faster. Because your truck is still running you are more or less at the back of the list. If your truck still runs fine waiting 4-6 weeks isn't a big deal IMO.
Mackin 11-01-2004, 09:47 PM It didn't just start doing this,it's been happening all summer and I've driven it EVERY WHERE.I'd do another thousand mile weekend in a heartbeat while I wait!
Other then the noise at Idle and the occasional rough idle which is intermediate at best, I'm not worried about it going down ,but if it does ,I got a set with my name on it!
I just have to get it fixed figured I set the wheels in motion and test my luck, so far so good. Keep grasping Hoot!

Duramax Dually 11-01-2004, 10:08 PM Mackin, Hoot
Mine fell to the injector woes 1 week ago. I went about it a little bit different. I went in and played like I knew nothing(Although I have been friends with the parts manager and they sponsored me racing last season) The service writer was new.
I just went in and said "All" the magic words.
When he said "So what seems to be the problem?"
I said "Well it is kind of weird,Truck feels low on power". "The truck appears to be smoking at idle and there is a loud clacking noise at a stop light". I said "It just started about a week ago"
He then said "Well your description of symptoms appears to be an injector issue" He went on to explain the TSB and how the injector works and so on. Actually real nice guy. He had no idea I raced for years and completely understand EFI and injector functionality....http://www.dieselplace.com/forum/smileys/smiley36.gif
I left the truck for diagnosis, they called me in 3 hrs and said that some are out and it would be best to replace them all per the TSB...I said "OK Gee...Can I have the truck back til the parts are in?" They said the tech said it should be fine.
So now I keep trips local and wait for parts. They are in what they Call S.P.A.C. No timeline was given to me...
I really think this is, or can be, an ego game to some degree with certain individuals. You go in and state you know this TSB or you checked it yourself and they immediately go on the defensive. I admit there are a few service techs that lack quite a bit but you have a few layers of people to get through to get the truck fixed. I also found another trick, always have your truck in super detailed condition when you take it in. They know then you are on top of your truck and will know if the job was done poorly plus they pay closer attention to detail when working on it.......http://www.dieselplace.com/forum/smileys/smiley2.gifEdited by: Duramax Dually
gslam88 11-01-2004, 10:45 PM Mac,
Which dealer did you go to anyway..
Pete
SaguaroKid 11-01-2004, 10:46 PM Man, I haven't been very regular lately thinking about injector problems. Especially when ya hear about people having multiple episodes. Wish there was a definitive answer to the problem.
Maybe Ralph Nader could help us. http://www.dieselplace.com/forum/smileys/smiley36.gif
socaldieseltech 11-02-2004, 12:17 AM SaguaroKid, I haven't seen the new style injectors failing. They are holding up as far as multiple failures go. Of course there will be failures, but I think the "updated" injector is working alot better. I can't believe some dealers are saying 4-6 weeks. I did one injector job on thursday ( truck came in on wed, down for 2 days) and I did 2 injector jobs on friday (both came in on thursday down for 2 days). I have one more truck left from Thursday and the customer is crying saying it is taking too long, but he should be done tomorrow if I can be left alone for a while. If he only knew.....
Got Juice? 11-02-2004, 10:48 AM Socal, we appreciate what you do on our trucks!
Nobody likes to break down, but your whiney customer...lol.... tell him cheap/fast/perfect.
Then ask him to pick the two he wants you to follow while working on his pride and joy that he paid the $$$$ for
SaguaroKid 11-02-2004, 05:16 PM I wish they would extend the warranty on the 2003s. I had a seizure (Blacked out for some reason, no one knows why) can't drive for 6 months. Only got 14k on mine.
I should'nt say but, having the wife drive me around all the time sure is a test of fortitude. http://www.dieselplace.com/forum/smileys/smiley5.gif
Yes, thanks much to all you techs for all the great help and info. If I have problems with my baby I'm taking her to someone that I feel they know what their doing. At my dealership the service writer won't even let me talk to the tech. Ya drop yer truck off at the front door and pick it up at the back. That does'nt instill much confidence to me. It's like it's their truck or some thing. I'd like ta have a little active part in the process. I've worked at the J.D. Engine Works for 11 years now and get 1/2 a hard on when it comes ta that stuff.http://www.dieselplace.com/forum/smileys/smiley1.gif
Keep grasping Hoot!

dmaxalliTech 11-02-2004, 10:53 PM If I have problems with my baby I'm taking her to someone that I feel they know what their doing. You'll have to hitch a ride with my buddy Jerry from Davenport, he comes up and visits me with his 02 with 340+k on it from time to time
SaguaroKid 11-02-2004, 11:09 PM Jumping crickets, 340+k??? I got access to a nice trailer!! I love Michigan..been to the U.P. a couple times, Sleeping Bear dunes, Mackinaw Island. Great pasties..Mighty Mac is awesome. Spent a week in Manistque (can't remember spelling)one night....
If I have truck problems, you the man.
jesshd 11-03-2004, 09:06 AM Mine was hard starting. Harder and harder. Went to the first dealer, they spent the 10 hours to tear down and diagnose. Said the return rate on the right side was way to high. Then called back later after putting it back together and said they woudl not fix it because I had a "splice" on the truck. This was the vacuum line for the boost gauge at the waste gate canister line. Called another Chevrolet dealer in another town that is a farm town and lot's of trucks. They ordered the injectors without even seeing the truck. I should add that this is the dealer that did the diagnosis to start with. I just wanted the other one to fix it because it is where I bought it. This is also the dealer that told me the added Cat filter and gauges were a good idea. Took it back to the dealer that this started with, not the one that I bought it from. The reason I was there is because the lady that sold me the truck mived there. In the process of getting the parts, the lady that sold me the truck quit. The good news is that the Service Manager there was a great guy. Waited the 5 weeks for the parts, they installed them and told me it was ready to go. Got there and the truck was covered with grease on the fenders and valve cover seal on the seats. Started it up and it clacked and smoked. Tech came out and scratched his head. Left it there and they said that 3 of the new injectors had failed. One note on the service ticket said something about a burned seal and number 8 being stuck open. They ordered more parts. They told me that they would just get 3 more. About 2 weeks later they called and said that the truck was done. It also showed they had replaced all 8. Truck has been running great ever since.

Trippin 11-06-2004, 02:04 PM Other then the noise at Idle and the occasional rough idle which is intermediate at best,
My 03 does the exact same thing. 45,000 miles. One day the balance rates are +8 the next day +6. An injector change is coming, I can feel it.
