: 04 LLY PINGING
Ruthiepacer 10-25-2004, 01:04 PM I HAVE REAL BAD PINGING UNDER LOAD ABOUT 1500-1900 RPMS. HAD THE RE-FLASH STILL NO BETTER. TRY TOWING A 6,500 LBS CAMPER AND THAT'S ALL YOU GET IN FIFTH GEAR. THERE HAS TO BE SOMETHNG THAT WILL CORRECT THIS PINGING IN THE WORKS. IF NOT, THIS DURAMAX WILL HAVE A SHORT LIFE.

LLY DMAX 10-25-2004, 09:56 PM Man that sounds bad.
I'd make sure to take someone from the Chev service dept on a test drive so they can't say they don't hear it.
Then make them fix the problem. When you get it back, Test it right away. If the problem is still there take it straight back to the shop. Don't let them off the hook until it is right.
If they "can't fix it" it sounds like GM owes you a new one...http://www.dieselplace.com/forum/smileys/hihi.gif
Ruthiepacer 10-26-2004, 07:53 AM When you tow your fifth wheel particularly under load, (up moderate hills in fifth gear in tow/haul mode) do you notice any spark/pinging at all. I know the diesel does have some noise characteristic of a diesel but I know I hearing pinging/spark knock? Not nearly noticeable when not towing my camper.

av8rbri 10-26-2004, 08:16 AM Well, unfortunately, what I would advise is to add Stanadyne fuel additive. Can be found at some auto supply stores. Maybe try NAPA. It is a little pricey, but could work. It is NON-alcoholic, and approved by GM.
It may take a couple of tankfuls to get it right.
Otherwise, like me, you may have a prelude to a bad injector[s]/pump.
Good luck.
Well i had this problem, for a good 5k miles. Not sure why it just went away on its own.
Mark_my_word 10-26-2004, 04:58 PM Bill,
Sounds like we have the same problem. Only have about 4,500 mile on my 2005. Took it into the dealer at around 1500 miles for the knock and he showed me a PI (PI01845A) and told me it was 'burst rattle'.
Wording from the PI related to 'burst rattle':

2. the 6.6L (LLY) Duramax Diesel engine timing burst rattle at 1500 - 1800 RPM (light acceleration, light load fully warm). If determined to be excessive compare to a like 6.6L (LLY) Duramax Diesel engine. For diagnostic purposes advise using 1 - 2 tankfuls of a name brand / different source diesel fuel to determine if the concern is caused by a fuel quality issue.

Too bad he couldn't tell me what 'burst rattle' was when I asked him. Based on teh description in the PI, that is what I have. I just want to know if this is supposed to be normal or not. They did do the ecm flash and that did not seem to do much.
I get the knock whether driving the streets of the freeway. If the truck is not under load, no knock. Push down a little on the gas and there's the knock. You can hear it down there below the normal diesel clatter. Lots of people have told me its the pilot injection cutting out but I know its not that because the pilot cuts out around 2500. Even when the pilot cuts out over 2500 it sounds different then the knock I hear.
I do seem to notice it mostly between about 1500 and 1900 like you do. I just got a toyhauler and pick it up on Friday so I have not towed a trailer yet so I can't comment on what it sounds like while towing but I'm sure the knock will be there.
I am going to try to take in in this week and have the tech ride with me. If he says its normal I'll tell him to get one off the lot and show me.
It is pretty annoying and kind of embarassing. I don't have any smoke, the truck runs fine, has power and gets great mileage. I just want to make sure there won't be any long term problem. If this is normal, fine. I just need to find someone who can explain why mine does it and other's don't.

yamahagrizzly 10-26-2004, 06:57 PM i had the same problem with my truck.
what i did was i ran my tank almost empty. put gumout diesel injector cleaner in and filled the tank with a good quality place(a place with a filter on their pump).
after about 4-5 tanks its all gone. also you need to kinda beat on it. rev it up. i reved it to about 2500 and up all the time. i dont think it would hurt a diesel to much.
it worked for me. i got over 15k on my truck.ive been ping free for 5500 miles. i also use gum out ever 2000 miles.
BuckeyeQuicky 10-27-2004, 12:41 AM Are we talking about the famous Tick Tick Tick sound that I and a lot of others are experiencing?.
westwindsdiesel 10-27-2004, 11:19 PM Buckeye its not the ticking. I have the ticking and the knocking I now have 9k and still knocking. The colder air has help some as well Stanadyne fuel additive seem to help BUT still there. That so sad that you and me and others need to mask the knocking on $45k truck. GM need to work with this problem a little more and stop pushing it out the door by saying "Its a diesel it will knock" I am loosing confidence in and trust in gm and that sad because I love this truck.http://dieselplace.com/forum/smileys/smiley7.gif
Ruthiepacer 10-28-2004, 06:37 AM Mark and All,
I am aware of the service notice as to the "Burst Rattle". I think that notice is bull. What I am hearing is spark knock or pinging. I guess I am going to have to hook up my camper and pull the darn thing down to the dealer and let the tech hear this pinging. It just kills me, you can't buy something new without all this crap you got to go through.
I just sold a 99 2500 6.0 gas that sounded like a diesel that had the cold knock when you started up. The same bull with that engine, it's normal, will not hurt a thing and so on.
westwindsdiesel 10-28-2004, 10:51 AM I test drove the new dodge and it sounds good NO knocking, ping, no nothing. just a nice runner I'm going to force a lease return becouse I'm not in to spend $45k on a truck that knock, ticks, pings. and yes I know it a diesel and it will make some noise but D-MM . I hope dodge tec's may know there truck a litte better Edited by: westwindsdiesel
