My turn, took my rig in for excessive smoke. All eight being replaced, no hassles from the dealership which is nice. They aren't sure on the wait for parts yet, will let me know later today. I hope this new fuel filter will solve this problem. Anyone know when it will be widely available?

After having to get new injectors, I think I will go with a Nictane prefilter as well. Can't hurt, and its lots cheaper than a new set of injectors. Can anyone that has installed a Nicktane tell me if you really need that special quick disconnect tool, or can I get by without it?

John-there was a tsb put out a few weeks or so ago about a new fuel filter either was or is being developed that was soon going to be available to the masses for the d-max...both lb7 and lly IIRC....thats about the jist of it...there wasnt any real specfics on it tho....

You will need to get the disconnect tool to get the fuel line off of the tank as well as off the fuel cooler...

I just had 2 injectors replaced on my 03 last week. Had the Nicktane on there for all but the first 5,000 miles. Clean fuel cannot protect against a crappy injector design.... I'll just keep my fingers crossed.Edited by: 4x4man

st_pinetree,

Lisle makes the removal tool. Sears has it for about 9 buck IIRC. Just watch the sharp edges up underneath there. You slip and you could have a doozy of a slice.

I have nearly 100K. Added Nicktane set up at 60K ish. Doubt it will have a impact other than good clean fuel. I have not heard of anybody with a "Plugged" injector......

I will add my version here. Nicktane went on at about 3K. Hard starting at about 12K once in a while. First dealer diagnosed bad injectors due to high fuel line return rates. They would NOT replace the injectors because I had a boost gauge spliced into the wategate line. Yes I know they are morons. Took it to another dealer. They ordered the injectors after I called Chevy sight unseen. Took about 6 weeks to get them in. Truck was getting harder and harder to start. At about week 5, the truck would not start. Had to have it flat towed to the dealer. There is sat for 2 weeks. They got the injectors in, called and said the truck was ready. I went to pick it up and it was clattering, knocking and smoking. They diagnosed it as having 3 bad injectors, some gasket burned, and once of the "new" injectors stuck open. 2 more weeks go by. I get a call last Friday that the truck is ready. Go to get it, it starts right up and is running right. Have been driving it for 3 days, still running very good. Would have been a happy day if I had not had to spend 3 hours cleaning the gasket compound off of the paint, belt buckle scratches in the fender, greasy hand prints off of the leather and so on. The good new is she is back and running right. I have had the Nicktane on there since the very beginning and may even add a lift pump and post filter.

There is no doubt a good filter will help long term fuel system
durability. It can't do much about poor design or poor manufacturing. I
get the feeling the stepped up injector production to keep up with
demand is not doing QC at Bosch any favors.

About 75k miles. Babied its whole life. Looks like it just rolled off the showroom floor. All stock.
