I know the TECH 2 will do everything I could want but it is a little pricey. Is there anything on the market that will do most of what I might need to self diagnose my 05 D-max??? Edited by: turbo lcc

If you already own a laptop computer, the
"Explorer OBD2" software/cable is an option.
The URL is; http://www.obd-2.com/
It's fairly cheap, but is not all that "user friendly"
in my opinion. On the plus side, it can reset the trouble codes.
It has "enhanced real time data (mode 22, 23)" specifically for
the LB7 that you can download as well....

Well if you shop ebay they run around ~$2800

You can get them from GM for around ~$4500 depending on the configuration and software.

Enjoy,

Terry,

This product looks pretty Good!!

Their website says" New Browser Features...Updated GM diesel enhanced real time data includes 6.6 Liter and automatic transmissions"

Have you used yours to monitor Dmax fuel system data i.e. balance rates, ect ?

Careful boys, the web site refers to the LB7 engine, not your LLY. The LLY has a totally different ECM than the LB7. You're talking a 32 bit computer vs. a 16 bit and totally different software as well.

The fact that it can read the CAN bus is a plus, but a lot of the information some people here want to get at is vehicle specific not covered in the generic code reading abilities of most code readers. GM doesn't seem inclined to release any current model year service information for the aftermarket, so all you'll get is the stuff specified by law for the emission testing and maybe some other stuff they might have figured out.

You ought to get in touch with them and ask specific questions about whether or not it will read the info you are looking for...http://www.dieselplace.com/forum/smileys/smiley9.gif

Agreed, DO check with Alex Pepper (software developer)
on the OBD-2.com site and verify that it will work with
the LLY engine option.

My opinion is that it -may- because the connector &
interface is supposed to be standardized SAE/OBD-2 complaint since around '96. There are "special"
realtime modules for each specific application (like
the LB7) so Alex may be working on the LLY version...

I have not used the Explorer s/w to try to do an
injector balance test. As I said earlier, it's not
the easiest thing to use (again, just my opinion).

good luck,

T.
