: PPE Tuner
daericks 07-08-2007, 02:46 AM Alright everyone... I got one of these and hooked it up. Here is a quick link so you know what I am talking about...
(link not allowed)
I had a nice SuperChips tuner for my 04 DM and it was AWESOME. This bugger has some nice options that my old one didn't. I added 33 inch tires and it calibrated that. It has a built in OBD II scanner for our DM's. It has a nice tranny reset to help the tuning process kick in faster. All great stuff. Directions are very good but be sure you read them entirely if you have never used one of these. Simple things are easilty overlooked; like, pulling two fuses, don't open the door when the tuning is going on, etc. Oh, this one is also NOT married to your DM like the old one. In other words if you came over to my house in Phoenix I could tune you up with the same one I use.
So, this has four settings. Economy, light tow, heavy tow, performance. You can count "stock" as a fifth if you want to get technical. I went for economy first. Results: on a 220 mile trip I got 15 MPG. I did this same trip a week ago on stock and got 14. This may not seem great to you but i average 75 MPH so I didn't think it was awful. I KNOW it can do better because i failed to follow one of the instructions that required me to cut a larger hole into the air intake. I will be doing this tomorrow.
I played with the speed setting and holy smokes! It is very quick but clearly will be much better when the turbo gets the air it is supposed to get.
At any rate, I thought some of you might be interested. I think it is silly to NOT use a tuner. Good stuff and this first one rates pretty good in my opinion. Cheers,
Dan
Your 100% right, I have a Hypertec and a PPE programer. But the ppe is 200% better. More features, better and smoother shifts. And smoother power and more of it.
Love my truck and all the upgrades have so far been worth it.
Ron.
DmaxTuner 07-08-2007, 03:07 AM do you have an Allison or a stick?
rrharley 07-08-2007, 06:12 PM Dan, sent you a PM. Fred
noproblem 07-08-2007, 09:18 PM I ordered mine from the same people, but I did not go through eBay. They are vendors of Diesel Place.
On the highest setting is were I am getting the best fuel economy and that is 13.7 hand calculated but my dic shows 13.9 so it is not too far off.
The PPE tuner is great, but i do think that once you program your truck it is married to it until you restore the stock setting... Can someone please confirm this...
Dan@PPE 07-10-2007, 05:30 PM Correct! You can only tune one truck at a time...
Dan
Bartman432 07-12-2007, 02:51 AM Dan from PPE advised you will get the best mileage with it set at level 4. This proved very true. I drove about 50 miles on pretty much flat terrain on the hwy at 65 mph and averaged 23 mpg. My LMM has 33" BFG's with the only other modification being that I opened up the factory airbox as suggested by PPE. Their tuner rocks
Dan told me also that I would get the best milage on level 4. He said the higher tunes get the best milage. The only problem I see is keeping your foot out of it so you don't hurt the trans. He said on the lbz the trans is a little stronger and can run the 160hp tune and you probably will have no problems from to much power. I am currently running the 160 tune hoping everthing will be ok. I havent full throttled it yet, but am finding its real hard to resist because it feels so healthy.
Ron
rrharley 07-12-2007, 12:13 PM I am waiting for my PPE and EGR blocker plate to show up for my LMM. Then I'll see what my mileage does! Up somewhat I hope.
Hey Daericks! What level are you running and how is it working out.?
MUD SLUT 07-12-2007, 02:34 PM I am running level 4 and I love it. I just need to stop the regens...
rrharley 07-12-2007, 04:41 PM Mud slut, what is the PPE air box mod? And where did you find it? I looked on their web site and didn't see it.
MUD SLUT 07-12-2007, 07:14 PM The PPE airbox modification instructions came with my tuner. They are similar to the one at kennedy diesel's website. Basically, you cut a big honkin hole in the front of the box. PPE says that, with this mod you will outflow and outfilter any and all after market intakes. Mod flows good for 500+HP. (Cool more money for other stuff and oem replacement parts!) Maybe someone else can chime in with more.
daericks 07-12-2007, 08:16 PM Dan (PPE) why in the world does the literature say economy is the best for milage? 4 on mine says that it is the speed setting.
daericks 07-12-2007, 08:24 PM Correct! You can only tune one truck at a time...
Dan
Dan (PPE), i'm not sure how this operates because I was able to change the settings in another truck after I used it. He ultimately purchased one because it made such a difference but it definately didn't marry to mine alone. I have since used it and have had no issue. Did I just get a weird one or what?
Dan (not from PPE)
daericks 07-12-2007, 08:26 PM do you have an Allison or a stick?
I have an Allison but you can use the "+/-" on the tree as well. I didnt' know they made a TRUE manual on these.
Quiky One 07-12-2007, 08:46 PM I have an Allison but you can use the "+/-" on the tree as well. I didnt' know they made a TRUE manual on these.
You are correct. They do not make a 6 speed manual in the LMM.

BUT, did you put yours back to stock first? I think the same goes with all handhelds. You can do as many different trucks as you'd like as long as the stock tune is reinstalled to the previous truck first. (I'm not either Dan, but I hope I helped)
Oh yeah, I see it was purchased from ETR. I have dealt with Geoff a few times. Good people, good deals.

If you the have the latest version 1.2 the economy will be the same if you keep your foot out of it on all 1-6 tunes.....

Dan,
Did you return your truck back to stock before using it one next truck?
That is what I mean when I say one truck at a time... You can put your truck back to stock and use it on another and vise versa....

psd tuner 07-15-2007, 10:50 PM well how much hp can u gain from the ppe? i dont own one but considering it in about 2 years. can u install any performance exaust? i dont know much about the new duramax or the mods you can do to it.
thanks,
eric
Ok guys, I ordered my PPE tuner last night, the one with 4 levels. I should have it around the middle of the week. The big questions are what gauges are you guys adding to the LLM's? Do I need gauges? If so were the hell do I put them in my SLT?

I don't have gauges, but I do not pull heavy or do anything but common driving.
I spoke to the guys at PPE today. Told me I would be fine running level 1 or 2 without gauges. I should have them if I run level 3 or 4, or if I do heavy pulling so I ordered them today. I just have to try to find someplace to put them, or wait for the A pillor to come out for the LMM trucks.
BCHandy 07-23-2007, 08:58 AM I have a stock 2007.5 LMM. If install one of these will I have to remove the particulate filter or do any other mods I’m thinking of installing this after I installed 285/75/R16 on my truck. The transmission now seem to shift at the wrong torque range. Will this help with the issues. I also need the speed odometer fixed and I believe this will do it. I plan to keep this truck for a long while and I don’t want to damage anything. I would run at level 1 or 2 and I only hall at the most 5000 pounds. Thanks for the help.
BMGhauler 07-23-2007, 11:39 AM PPE works WITH the particulate filter and WILL correct for tire size. My dad has one on his stock exhaust LMM. He's currently running level 3 but doesn't tow anything. You will love this tuner. Smooth power, good shifts (unless you are heavy into the throttle and the defuel is a bit steep)
BCHandy 07-23-2007, 01:06 PM Thanks for the reply, I think I'm going to buy it.
White LMM Rider 10-09-2007, 09:14 PM I first bought the PPE chip and put it on my LMM truck with 500 miles on the truck. After driving it about a week it went into the "limp-mode" I have been reading about and I drove it around for about 2 weeks like that. I put it back to stock and took it to the dealership and they cleaned out the exhaust filer and it was good as new. I put the upgraded software on the chip and have put it back on my truck. Every so often (maybe once a week) it will do the limp-mode thing again but after I shut the truck off or sometimes if I stop, it will usually go back to the performance mode I had it tuned too. Does anyone else have this problem that has the PPE chip and if so, why is it doing that? Is it bad for the truck? Thanks.
calabria69 10-09-2007, 09:48 PM edges evolution is coming out in a couple of weeks. Tuner not a chip! 4stages on the fly (no other tuner provides), monitor (still no other tuner provides), online updatable and dpf delete (very sweet)!

Are you getting a check engine light? If so what is the code the tuner pulls out of it?
Dan
fire0021 10-11-2007, 02:15 AM calabria dpf delete or cell light turn off ?
