I have an 04 duramax and looking to upgrade exaust and intake. Was wondering what are some of the best brands for your money.

Lucky 13- Is your truck an LB7 or LLY? Are you looking for a loud system or are you wanting it to stay quiet?

If you want it loud, why not just straight pipe it?

ive thought about that but i was wondering if that is emissions legal in texas(no muffler or cat)

No cat isnt legal anywhere in the country...Thats a federal law....It dosent stop anyone from doing it though...

My 5" straight pipe cost me 300 with tax and my Quadzilla intake costs 275 w/tax (went with cheap here ;D)

The straight pipe is loud and you can really hear the turbo through the intake.

I seriously doubt that any law enforcement is gonna stop you just to see if you have a cat on the truck or not...

Its not a matter of getting caught...Its not like running red dyed diesel...

If Texas requires an inspection, (which I think they do) they may not pass you if it isnt there. Some may never look. Hell, in most states, any exhaust modifications to your vehicle, other than OEM components are technically illegal...

I wouldnt worry about it.

I had an 04.5 LLY for about 60k miles and bought it in Louisiana where I was living and I never had a problem...

I had a problem getting it inspected up here in this communist state simply because that cat, wasnt there....

how much difference in performance and sound would there be in running with/without cat and muffler

Alot....

Taking the cat off alone will make it much louder....The turbo's gonna whistle alot more too.

by running a straight pipe also increase mpg as well as horse power by a noticeable amount?

Mileage, sure, to an extent...Some pick up 1-2 mpg that way. You'll also gain around 20 h.p. or so. Some dyno's showed more and some less...

If you tow anything, it'll drop your exhaust temps by several hundred degrees...

what would the difference between a straight 4" or a straight 5" be in terms of mpg and horse power and sound and just overall in general

5", in my opinion is overkill. It tends to have a deeper tone, not sure why. Unless you plan on making serious h.p., like 6-700, anything over a 4" is a waste of money....You're not gonna gain anything more with a 5" than you will with a 4".

Of course this is just my opinion...

On an LB7 in TX you shouldn't have a cat anyway. I thought they only put cats on CA emission equipped trucks. Just so you know, right now anyway, when TX does state inspections they don't do emissions tests on diesels, yet. If you don't live in a large urban area they don't do them on anything. I wouldn't worry too much about it if I were you.
