: Compression Issue?

I finally bit the bullet and did the flywheel/clutch job today. Took about 9hrs total from start to finish, wasn't too bad I guess. Spent more time worrying about it for the last few months than it took to do the job. Rented a tranny jack with the articulation controls and boy was it worth every penny. I hope the red thread locker on the flywheel bolts is a good thing...

I do have one question, is it normal to be able to turn the engine over by hand using the flywheel? I mean it was hard, but I could turn the engine completely over with my bare hands on the flywheel no sweat. I thought it was 20:1 compression ratio? Seems like I shouldn't be able to do that. The truck runs fine, has lots of power, I would have never known it was like this. Should I be concerned about it? Is this normal? I had to rig up a piece of angle iron with two bolt holes connecting to 2 clutch bolts with the other end resting against the torsion bar in order to loosen and tighten the flywheel bolts. It would spin real easy with the breaker bar if I didn't. I am a little concerned...

Thanks,

Tim

I think its 17:1 ratio but thats still a lot. I can turn over Cummins M11's with just a small bar. Thats about twice the size of you engine. I haven't tryed it myself on a 6.6 but I would not worry too much about it.

Where u turning the engine backward?

W/ the slow speed u are turning it the compression has time to bleed past the rings .

I had 12.5:1 pistons in a LS7 454 and the vasco jet springs w/ roller cam would turn the crank if stopped in the right spot.

If you had a compression problem, you would be blowin white smoke. And LOTS of it. That is a sign of raw diesel fuel being dumped out (not enough compression to ignite it). Don't worry man. Your golden.

Thanks for the info, I feel better now. I guess I worry about everything...
