: Somebody talk me out of selling my truck
DuraMike 10-23-2004, 10:38 PM I am fed up with my Dmax/Allison 02 2500HD. I bought the truck in January and the day I test drove it, the front pump went out in the transmission. No problem, I knew I was getting a deal, so I bought it anyway since the trans was under warranty. It had 42,000 on it. Got it back 6 weeks later from the dealer (already made a payment and had not put 20 miles on it yet). Drove home with it, happy and proud to finally have a Dmax truck. Got home and noticed both rear axle seals leaking...a lot. Took it back, they had it for 4 more days. Got it back, still leaking on the RR. Replaced the seal 3 more times before it was finally fixed. Now the front axle seals leak...a lot. Haven't replaced them yet, probably won't. Then I find this awesome website I am on now. It renews my hopes of having the truck I have wanted since I first saw one. Then, 3 weeks ago, two injectors fail. Back to the dealer for them to tell me it will be another 4-6 weeks before the new injectors will be here. They told me not to worry about it and drive it! I got home and there was diesel and motor oil dripping off of every possible place it could drip from under the truck. The crankcase is so full of fuel, it only holds about 15-20 lbs of oil pressure. That's it, I am going back to gas. Nice chatting with you great guys and gals while it lasted. (My Ford LOVING in-laws are LOVING this)
dmaxalliTech 10-23-2004, 11:03 PM sounds like you have had terrible luck with your truck. Some of the repairs were repeats, not the trucks fault.
Just trade it off and start fresh, or better yet, I'll give ya 2500 bucks for it and your problems will go awayhttp://www.dieselplace.com/forum/smileys/hihi.gif
nwpadmax 10-23-2004, 11:07 PM $2501 http://www.dieselplace.com/forum/smileys/hihi.gif
nwpadmax 10-23-2004, 11:11 PM OK maybe I shouldn't be such a smartass....
Sounds like you got the truck from hell. The only thing
diesel-related in your story was injectors. There are known
issues, and they should be under warranty on an 02. Dang, the guy who buys it next will have a brand new truck eh!
Hey, how was your tranny under warranty at 42k?

DuraMike 10-23-2004, 11:14 PM I appreciate the offershttp://www.dieselplace.com/forum/smileys/smiley36.gifbut I will be unable to entertain them right now, the bank would probably have something to say about it. http://www.dieselplace.com/forum/smileys/smiley9.gif

The used dealer I bought the truck from warrantied the tranny without question. They had a flat bed come get it and take it to a GM dealer. Yeah, you are right about the only thing being diesel related was the injectors, but this is the truck from hell. Oh, I forgot to mention that the power steering leaks and the rear brakes went out at 62,000.
Dmaxcan 10-24-2004, 02:16 AM I had a '95 Yukon that was "the truck from hell". It leaked oil from the day I bought it new. In the 7 years I owned it, the tranny was rebuilt, the oil leaks never stopped, replaced rear end bearings twice and had to take out all the carpeting because of water leaks. The truck only had 45,000 when I traded it in on my '02 Dmax. The only thing I've had to do with this truck, other than routine maintainance, is the tailgate straps were replaced.
No matter what you buy there are always going to be lemons. I would get rid of this truck and buy another.
Dmax Tim 10-24-2004, 06:13 AM I wonder if that truck had been in a flood or mud running or just a rough previous owner.
For all the seals to start leaking and the brakes going out so soon.
Every so often you get hit with the red headed stepchild. No matter what brand, they all produce them.
Turfmower 10-24-2004, 08:30 AM There no bad trucks just bad owners, the old owner Beat the sh*t out of the truck. Why would any one get rid of a 2 year old truck otherwise.
Look at Hoot he got rid of of his truck after dropping a tree on it. http://www.dieselplace.com/forum/smileys/hihi.gif
NWDmax 10-24-2004, 09:22 AM I gotta go with Turfmower on this one. What was the trucks history
before you bought it? I'd would try to get the dealer to work with you
toward a trade/purchase of a different one with a known history.It does
sound like they've tried to do right by you. Good luck and stick with
the Duramax!

DuraMike 10-24-2004, 10:17 AM I had it brought up on the computer at the dealer and he said the tranny had been replaced at 14,000 along with the starter, flywheel and torque converter. Dmax Tim, you were right along the lines of mud running or something of that nature. The tech that did the tranny (for me) said he remembered alot of mud built up on top of the transmission when he pulled it. It is just so tough to cut your losses and trade in when you know that they are going to try to stick it to ya on a newer one. I did kind of question why someone would get rid of a truck that he only had for 1 year. The guy that had it before me left all of his paperwork in the truck and the sticker. He paid $41,500 in December of '02 and traded it in December of '03. I gave $26,000 for it on a used car lot. I guess I was the sucker, a lesson learned for this next timehttp://www.dieselplace.com/forum/smileys/smiley9.gif.

That sounds suspicious....at that rate, the last owner (whom is out there killing another truck, by the way) would have invested enough to buy a Govt. spec. Hummer in about 5-years, which is designed to be "abused" in this fashion.
Wrecking an Allison and blowing nearly all wheel bearing seals within 12 months of use indicates that the truck has had a rough life.....sometimes it is a good thing to 'look a gift horse in the mouth' before you take it home. I don't think the truck was originally a lemmon...it had endured service well beyond its designers intended, then was discarded as "scrap".
When a used car dealer makes you an offer too good to pass-up, its time to take flight and add that dealer to the list of dealerships to avoid.
Now you are stuck paying the difference between the 41K original price and the 26K you dolled out. An expensive lesson learned, but don't feel alone. I think most of us have gone through the same thing at one point or another. I know I have, and I no longer buy someone else's discards, only to avoid "depreciation".
As far as your decision to change back to Gas, or even different brand of trucks, consider this....the last owner of your truck has had another year to abuse another Chevy, Ford or Dodge, gas or diesel, and its sitting on a used car lot at 1/2 blue book, while he is "off-roading" a third.
