: REALLY cold start issues.

If I drive my truck every day, it starts just fine and runs great, no smoke.

If I let it sit for a day or 2, when I go to start it it runs rough and
smokes real good (bad..LOL)....its not a head gasket smoke or that
type, definately fuel...no loss of coolant, no oil burning issues (loss
or smoke)

After a few seconds its fine, runs great.

Here are the vitals.

Truck is a 1992 GMC duallie 6.5 TD. 90k on the truck and injector pump and injectors.

5k on the engine.

Basically I bought this truck a while back and it had inhaled some waa waa from a cracked head, bent 1 rod.

I installed new bearings/rod/piston/rings/heads/oil pump/timing
chain/timing gears and replaced both cylinder heads with rebuilds and
installed all new gaskets everywhere and glow plugs.

I re-used the injector pump and injectors.

It has run perfect every day up untill about 2 months ago. One thing to
consider, I recently moved from sea level to 5000 ft elevation. (about
the same time all this happened)

Thats about it, Im open to all suggestions.

Thanks

might want to look at your glow plug relay, when mine went bad first there was some cold start hesitation, Then a couple of days later no start at all, because the terminal had melted off of the relay. $37 for a new one fixed my cold start problems. Good Luck.

It wouldn't hurt to test the glow relay and plugs to verify their operation. Timing and injectors could make for rough starts if out of wack.

Thanks...maybe Ill just throw a relay in there for fun....not hard and not expensive.

Really easy to check with 12v tester. It switches on or it doesn't.

Most claim to hear it click when switching.Edited by: quantum mechanic

Theres no doubt its switching, in fact I can hear it. Stays on plenty
long enough and then shuts off, cycles for a couple seconds like it
should, so that sounds about right.

Maybe Ill just try a good set of glow plugs....I had an extra
set of "no name" brand plugs laying around that was brand new, and
installed them just to get the truck up and running.

When I say hard to start, it cranks for a couple seconds and then
fires, just shakes and smokes. I have done a little diesel repair over
the years (20 years ASE certified auto tech) but have never owned one
or trouble shot one.

Seems to be fine on warmer days http://www.dieselplace.com/forum/smileys/smiley5.gif

Thanks for the suggestions, when I get back from a business trip Ill
pull the glow plugs and see how long they take to heat up......

check the glow plugs first. Once all eight are determined to be good, take it from there.
