: Help With Revo Tires
skidsteerloader 10-22-2004, 11:47 PM I just purchased 235 85 16 Revos for my dually today, as my POS General Ameritracs were gone inside of 18k. My problem is the truck seems to sway or fishtail when going straight but jerking the wheel left to right repeatidly. The faster I go the worse it feels. ( I know- you dont drive like this normally ) but my point is truck DID NOT do this with the factory size. Is this due to the taller sidewall? I am running 75 psi all around empty (too much)? Also tried on wet pavement, truck does not slide out but feels like it wants to ( Body roll )? Will Bilsteins help? Should I go back to the puny 215 85 16 size? Truck rides and drives fine otherwise, I'm just worried If I have to swerve away from some a$$hole that I may wreck. Anyone else have this feeling after upgrading tire size? Any thoughts are greatly appreciated.
FASTOYS 10-23-2004, 02:33 AM I know mine isnt a dually nor am i talking about Revos BUT, i did try some 265s Dunlop ATs and then even went back and tried stock size 245s Dunlop ATs and then today drove a customers truck with 245 Dunlop ATs and ALL of the Dunlops drove like you are saying. Like shiat ! Felt like all 4 tires had about 15 lbs of air in them.http://www.dieselplace.com/forum/smileys/smiley11.gif I went back to 265 Firestone Steeltex and have had not 1 problem in 25,000 miles !!http://dieselplace.com/forum/smileys/smiley20.gif All the tires i tried were load range E with plenty of air ! Maybe this will help or give you some ideas i hope..
Kartattack 10-23-2004, 02:01 PM Tread squirm maybe?
Bronco 10-23-2004, 03:53 PM I have Revos but no dully. The Revos when brand new have a very " quick steer". It will go away soon. About a 2000 miles.
I have read that lowering the air pressure for the first few k will compensate?
FASTOYS 10-24-2004, 09:16 AM Tread squirm maybe?
Yes , that actually is what i meant to write also.
skidsteerloader 10-24-2004, 11:37 PM Well I couldnt handle that feeling so I took them off. Put my old ones back on, NO PROBLEMS. I really liked the way the larger tire looked under the wheel well. Also liked the tread and what I read about the revos. Will I have the same prob with the revos at the factory size? Any other suggestions for a decent tire? Thanks.
Dmax Tim 10-25-2004, 07:49 AM BF goodrich has a 235/85-16 in the AT, they have 3 ply sidewalls which helps on the side-to-side sway.
I used to tow my Deere SSL w/ 285/75-16 and now have 285/70-17 BFG AT, they tow better than stock crap tires.
Where do u live BTW?
HD-Nate 10-25-2004, 03:34 PM WOW....dont know what to tell you here.
Go back to the tire dealer and see what they have to say.
I dont have the dually, but do have 285/75 's and they are doing great, tow fine, no squirm or fishtail.
I have over 43,000 on them but may go to a newer set soon as they are starting to get thin. Mainly due to my Edge/Attitude them bastichs owe me a set of tires. http://www.dieselplace.com/forum/smileys/smiley7.gif
tysmith 10-25-2004, 06:41 PM I am running 235/85 revos on my 2500, and they were squirmy like crazy for a good couple thousand miles. Seemed excessive in the rear, not so much up front. It felt like you would lose the rear end in an emergency situation. That feeling went away, but so did the tread. I have about 28k miles on them now, and they won't make it to '05. Combination of juice and skinniness is the culprit. fronts will last another 15-20k, easy.
I'm going to swap out the Generals http://www.dieselplace.com/forum/smileys/smiley11.gif that came on the 3500 for 235's, but not revo's. I like the tire for it's grip, but don't care for the squirm. Probably end up with Michelin XPS tractions, just a little nervous as to spacing. I figure they should be okay, since they have a steel sidewall and virtually no bulge.

Bronco 10-27-2004, 12:56 PM Well I couldnt handle that feeling so I took them off. Put my old ones back on, NO PROBLEMS. I really liked the way the larger tire looked under the wheel well. Well I saw your review at the tire rack and it didn't look good. Sorry you are so dissapointed with the Revo.
I am not sure what width the stock rim is, but the 235/85/16 revo calls for a 6.5" wide rim. If you run a tire that is to wide for the rim, they do have the tendancy to wander. However I do not think this is your problem.
You asked, " will the stock size Revo do this? Probally not quite as noticable but it will probally do the exact same thing . In your original post you mentioned that if you jerk the wheel from side to side, it gets really bad. I would suggest not jerking the wheel. After I installed my new Revos I had to learn how to drive again. IT takes very little driver input at the steering wheel to notice a large correction on the road. That is the quick steer I was refering to. The Revos tread pattern is very responsive and just a little turn of the steering wheel gets you going in the direction you want to go.
I am sure that regardless of whos tire you choose, any brand new 235 will take some adjustment on your part. New tires just work better. The Revos just work a little to good when brand new. 1000 miles or so and you will love them.
I am heading to the tire store myself. Unfortunatly my Revos are at the treadbar indicator and I am only at 19000 miles. I guess that is better than the stockers, they were completly shot at 17000 miles. So the Revos will last about 4000 miles more than the stockers.
We have some bad roads where I live. My wifes sedan eats up premium Michelins like they were made out of styrofoam. Oh well, new tires are cool.
ON EDIT: Come to find out, the Revos have two tread wear indicator bars. The first bar is up pretty high. Approx. 1/4" high. THis first bar lets you know that you are now entering the second layer of thge tread compound. The second layer is a little softer and allows you too maintain great traction even with a low tread. I will update on milage when they get to the lowest tread wear indicator bar. My guess would be in another 3000 miles making for a 24000 mile tire. Goodthing it has a 50000 mile warranty. I will get 50% off of my next set of tires.Edited by: Bronco
skidsteerloader 11-08-2004, 08:08 PM UPDATE: I put the factory size revo on the truck a few days ago, and although the squirm is still there, it isnt nearly as bad as it was with the taller tire. Hoping that feeling goes away entirely after they get some mileage on them like others stated. Thanks to those who commented on this topic.
Jim659 11-09-2004, 12:51 AM I've heard the same thing about the revos. Almost bought a set but went with the BFGs instead.
Duramax Dually 11-09-2004, 01:09 PM I went up in tire size on my Dually to the P235/85 and never noticed any of what you experienced. I did notice a very quick steer when I was forced to avoid the people you mentioned above. Lots of those type drivers around here...... The truck responded politely but nothing squirmy as stated. I figured the response I felt was just having new rubber on the corners as my Goodyear rubbers were thin and slipped and slid all over. I am very happy with the tire both in performance and appearance . I just bought a set for my wifes new Denali. I am heading to the snow this weekend, Look forward to testing them there.
Weird you felt the same squirm with Revo's but of a smaller size....
Jeff
