I have a 2001 cummins my primer pump dosen't work . when I change my filter I have to prime it by hand sometimes 2 or 3 times before it will start can I change this or do I have to take it to a dealer?   ;
Not sure what you mean by prime by hand. I believe your truck only has
the electric lift pump. If it's gone you better not drive the truck as
it could damage the VP44 injection pump. They are known go before
100,000 miles and sometimes much sooner.
You can get a new pump at hoeslidiesel.com for $130
Dodge wants $400+ which includes install.

Hoot, could this problem cause hard starts? My brother-in-law needs six tries to get his '98 Cummins started. I live in Evansville and Hoesli Diesel is right up the street from me. My brother-in-law lives in Vegas. Any help would be appreciated.

Heartbeat is that a 12 valve or 24 valve It could be either if it is a 98?
I'm not the expert but do know what i said previously about the VP44
and bad lift pump is true. I would think yes it would cause hard
starting. You need to have it looked at or a pressure gauge hooked up
to see what's up.

It's the 24 V motor. He siad he took the lines off and the lines had pressure (fuel), but it sounds like he may have a small air leak causing him to loose prime. We have fought this for awhile and have addressed the "basics", but the problem is intermittent. Sometimes it starts right up, sometimes 6 - 7 tries. Also, it doesn't seem to do it or not do it in any kind of pattern.
Anybody know of a good reliable mechanic in Las Vegas?
