: new exhaust sounds like a gas burner
chevy_9465 10-22-2004, 09:50 PM i had the 3" exhaust put on with 4" tip and now its got a rumble kinda like a gasser, it sound great but i was hopin to improve the diesel sound not make it sound even less like a diesel. guess theres nothin i can do now but if anybodys got any thoughts let me know.
quantum mechanic 10-22-2004, 10:55 PM I think it's a unique exhaust sound unrestriced, like a diesel at idle and similiiar to a gasser with headers when you throttle it.
chevy_9465 10-22-2004, 11:09 PM yea that exactly how it is, is there anything that can be done, thats all iv heard all day "the exhaust a tip looks good but, it sound like a gas burner. is there anything that can be done or is it just the "unique chevy diesel sound. P.S. i went from stock pipes and a 3" tip, to 3" pipes and a 4" tip, and the old pipes were straight pipes to, cant figure out the sound changed so muchhttp://www.dieselplace.com/forum/smileys/smiley5.gif wish i had the new pipes with the old sound, the turbo is louder though
quantum mechanic 10-22-2004, 11:18 PM You could put on a muffler. That would take the roar out of it, but would you really want to?
When I say straight pipe, I mean no bends, transitions, flanges, nada
chevy_9465 10-22-2004, 11:21 PM but why would the sound change so much with just a little bigger pipes
chevy_9465 10-22-2004, 11:31 PM this may be totally wrong and almost stupid but here is what i was thinkin, the truck sounded pretty much like a diesel with the stock pipes (no gasser rumble) and what i was thinkin was the truck is still puttin out the same ammount of back pressure as before, so maybe with the bigger pipes it is echoing around in their a little, so i thought if the back pressure was stepped up a little with a chip or somthin that maybe it would sound like it used to?, http://www.dieselplace.com/forum/smileys/smiley9.gif like i said just a though may even get a few laughs outta that question
steiner43511 10-23-2004, 12:05 AM when you increase the diameter of the pipe, there is less resistance to flow,
a.k.a. rumble. everybend that is in the system all increases the rumble.
all i can say is go 4" with minimum bends as possible. i have 4" with only one bend
and my truck sounds like a diesel for sure.
chevy_9465 10-23-2004, 12:26 AM the only bends i mine r goin over the axle a the tip is bent a little, but where the pipes r bent they have like little ridges could this be my prob?
http://www.dieselplace.com/forum/smileys/smiley19.gif just spent over 100 bucks on 3" to late for 4 nowhttp://www.dieselplace.com/forum/smileys/smiley19.gif
chevy_9465 10-23-2004, 12:38 AM so could my thoery maybe work, increase the back pressure and get my old sound back?
My truck did not have a muffler or cat's when I bought it. It only sound like a diesel when idleing once I touch the throttle it sounds like a big block gasser with headers.
steiner43511 10-23-2004, 07:52 AM i dont know what would happen if you increased backpressure
some times when you put headers on certain applications it will be quieter than the stock exhaust manifolds even though you are decreasing backpressure.

chevy_9465 10-23-2004, 06:36 PM i dont really want it louder, i just want it back to a diesel sound, so i been wantin a chip anyways, guess ill just try it and see
Cowracer 10-25-2004, 05:05 PM If by "diesel sound" you are referring to something similar to what comes out of the dodge, you will never get it. There is an inherent sound in 90 degree v-8 odd firing engines no matter if gas or diesel. Just nature of the beast.
The cummins is a straight 6, and sounds different by nature. The chevy 250 straight 6 gasser, when unmuffled, has a similar growl/roar to the dodge diesel.
I think the Fords sound pretty much like the 6.5 as well, but I cant really tell over the injector rattle http://www.dieselplace.com/forum/smileys/smiley2.gif

chevy_9465 10-25-2004, 05:20 PM i know itll never sound like a cummins, but what i cant figure out is the fords are v-8s and iv heard them straight piped and they dont sound like a gasser?
War Wagon 10-25-2004, 06:24 PM On a stait piped ford diesel it seems that you hear a lot more of the turbo and sort of a distinct PSD bellow.
chevy_9465 10-25-2004, 10:22 PM it sounds good though, which mine sounds good to it just sounds like a gasser, when mine is just kinda ideling around and not gettin on it real hard, in my oppinon it sounds better than a ford or dodge
just wish it sounded like that all the time
