: bolt onperformance for 8.1
jacksonbase 10-22-2004, 03:23 PM Its time for more power and hopefully gas milage. What are the best bolt on performance accessories for an 8.1 with allison. I know a blower wold be great but does the typical cold air-exhaust-chip work on a new big block or am I wasting my money.
thanks
jacksonbase

Quit That!
Tierod 10-24-2004, 10:22 PM Yes all those make a difference I droped 2 tenth in 1/4 for every one of those mods but I do recommend doing a mail order ECU upgrade over a programer they much more aggressive that programer and more options. Try going to www.tbyrne.com (http://www.tbyrne.com)
Hey Dumy-Max boys find some ether place to play and stay out of the gasers forums the man asked a question. See this is what I have a problem with D-max owners I love the engine it's one the best thing GM ever did. You guys have way too big of a head on your shoulders hell you guys are worst then the Hemi boys.
Super Diesel 10-25-2004, 01:35 AM Tierod, Dumy-max? Difference is, we can back it up though (boy those Hemi guys got mislead). Not big heads, just happier than two tics in a dogs ear that we have the diesels available that can do what they can. Jacksonbase, your best bang for the buck would be the blower if you could swing it. 8.1 gasser has a great set up on his. You should talk to him if you haven't already. The mods you talked about are alot more hype than anything else. I saw a test done on one in a offroad mag (cant remember which one), and the exhaust, intake, and programer (hypertech I believe) gave it a whopping 7hp and 18fpt on the top. More in the middle though. They really need a compressor on em. That's where my money would go. Then make it breath better aswell. The rewards are worth it.
8.1GASSER 10-25-2004, 09:57 AM As SD has said....save your $$ and put some boost in it. All the rest is nice but won't give you the kick in the pants you may be looking for. I started my build with a programmer, headers, exhaust, ignition, and cai. I now am running a Whipple with their programming and unlike most have had zero problems, along with headers, exhaust, ignition, and modded air intake. Truck now has some respectable power, running 8.5lbs of boost on a warm sumer day it put down 360rwhp/452rwtq not bad for no intercooler either. I have added up all reciepts and am happy with my decision to take on this project instead of upgrading to the Dmax(have 2 to play with anyways) only thing I am lacking now is the MPG's....although diesel here is about $2.40 a gal. and 93 is right about $2.25.

IBDMAX'IN 10-25-2004, 07:15 PM Jacksonbase,
I think it would be wise to listen to 8.1gasser & SD. Force fed 8.1's are some bad mo-fo's, my buddie Adam just force fed his 8.1 and did some pretty extensive head work to it along with a custom program. Let me tell you, that thing is pretty intimadating when you go for a ride.
Unlike a diesel, you will have a** kickin power as soon as you get your foot in it http://www.dieselplace.com/forum/smileys/Rock On.gif, instead of building boost http://www.dieselplace.com/forum/smileys/smiley4.gif.
Tierod,
Dummy-max???? your one funny guy. You sound like a 6 year old!!! you dummy-max guys, you big stupid heads!!! LOL http://www.dieselplace.com/forum/smileys/smiley36.gifhttp://www.dieselplace.com/forum/smileys/smiley36.gif. Keep up the good work, I need a good laugh from time to time!!
8100hammer 10-26-2004, 04:06 PM Jacksonbase: May I suggest a forum with some real know-how LS1tech.com
Sorry but you will not get answer here, without jacka** remarks
Some people on here mentioning using a whipplecharger, thats old news. Not a favorite in the gasser world. Programming is concerned, don't go with Hypertech, It can not defeat factory torque managment, unlike a mail-order tune. This is why Super Diesel only saw very low numbers. also on 2004's and up, PCM never lets the throttle blade go WOT 100%, never. Only with a mail-order tune can you defeat this. Don't know why GM servely limits this engine.
Here is a list of mods and there times that they cut off
stock: 16.6
wester tune with WMP air intake : 15.56
cam and not tune for it : 15.1
cam after retune from westers and add a WMP diesel-style catback : 14.7
All mods to date in sig below
I have yet to put on a headers and roller arms rockers and valve springs. But have to wait to next year, track is closed for the snow season. So it time to switch gears and start getting ZRT ready.
IBDMAX'IN 10-26-2004, 04:55 PM 8100hammer,
Must have gotten bored with the whipple charger huh??, well since it's old news and all, and considering the fact you don't run one they must suck really bad.
Guess you better tell 8.1gasser he's doing something wrong using the whipple charger. Not like he couldn't kick the pants off your N/A 8.1 or anything but then again what do I know, I'm just a dummy-max guy!! http://www.dieselplace.com/forum/smileys/smiley36.gifhttp://www.dieselplace.com/forum/smileys/smiley36.gif
8.1GASSER 10-26-2004, 05:46 PM 8100hammer, just a comment of the Whipple...I did a ton of research prior to my purchase, and for the 4.8,5.3, and 6.0 I will agree that using the Whipple compressor with bigger injectors and an aftermarket tune is the way to go...but on the 8.1 I think otherwise, I spent alot of time speaking to Tom at Tbyrne about his Suburban which is probably one of the most modded 8.1's out there and basically chose my mods because they were proven...he did have some tuning done by Ed Wright at Fast Chips, but is still running Whipple electronics and aux. injectors...I believe that the problems in the small block world are not carried over to the world of big blocks. As far as torque management it must be magic cause I can roast my 35's with no problem, which many on this board can attest to. Their new electronics wiring is straight forward simple, and when I dyno'ed they did what they were supposed to do and my a/f is spot on...maybe I got lucky with using them, but then again they are the only game in town for a 8.1/ally.

Tierod 10-27-2004, 02:03 AM IBDMAX'IN I knew you would like that, thats wait you sound like when you guys jump all over a gasser just because he makes a post to ask a simple question and he dosn't have the Mighty D-MAX. BTW if 8100hammer had headers and 1.8 rockers he could match 8.1gasser's #. I know this I made 322rhp, 433wtq on motor with a crappy Hypertech programmer I was getting 17 deg of total timing. But then again 8.1gasser is on 35" tires
Super Diesel
The Hemi boys definitely got suckerd ( and I've seen some of there pathetic dyno #) but yea the D-Max backs it up. The HPIII programmer helped on the low end but was pretty lame all around. When I started playing with this truck that was my only option and I would not recommend it. I've seen some very empresseve # with 8.1. Like a Suburban that made 310whp,475wtq with an intake, exhaust, and very good tune. I tend to be a bit hostile to some D-Max guys because there are some big talkers around hear. When you tell them to put there money where there mouth is they will run and hide. But most are good guys and we have allot fun racing each ether.
8100hammer 10-27-2004, 06:35 AM 8.1gasser, Tom's SUB. is nothing compared to this. This guy is also the one that recommended not to going with whipplecharger. By the When the my pickup was stock I roast my 33" tires, what you point? Now I can get them turning and rolling smoke, let off brake, and pull thur 2nd just into 3rd before they stop smoking. big deal.
Also what do you run for times in the 1/4mile??
"ChevySSandChevy8.1" from LS1tech.com
03Silverado2500HD 8.1 extcab:Corsa Exhaust with catback,other guy's headers,baer brakes,Raylar aluminum cylinder heads,upgrade bolts,roller rockers, valves springs,comp camshaft,raylar forged pistons, valve cover spacers,bandm transmission cooler,yank torque converter,kennebell supercharger/intercooler,westers tuning,magnecore wires,hi flo intake manifold,NX kit with 150shot,BBK throttlebody,GMS mass airflow sensor.
8.1GASSER 10-27-2004, 12:15 PM Yup heard about that truck...problem is no one has seen it let alone seen it run...as far as rolling your 33's get off the damn brake....when I talk about roasting tires power brakers need not apply

ratlover 10-29-2004, 04:21 PM Not much can be done to get better milage. Most of the things that get a deccent increase in power hurt milage even if you keep your foot outa it. On a newer gasser and this is JMO either get pretty wild with it or throw some exhasust on it so it sounds good atleast and be happy with it otherwise stock. No easy wonder box like there is for the diesels. Its not as easy to have your cake and eat it too with a gasser, sorry
